Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Nutrition writers Cicero and Pierre offer an encyclopedic look at 117 foods they say can help stave off cancer, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and a dozen other health problems increasingly common in our fast-food nation. The authors arrange the foods alphabetically, mixing herbs, fruits, vegetables, meats, fish and dairy, and for each entry they provide a simple synopsis of health benefits, useful sidebars on selection and storage, and a suggested recipe. Foodies may be disappointed with the authors’ reliance on frozen and prepared foods: the Ginger Butternut Soup recipe calls for frozen butternut squash purée, and the Stressful-Day Soy Stir-fry uses bottled teriyaki marinade. However, if time-strapped cooks don’t mind some pre-made ingredients or the punchy prose ( "Get Hooked on It," the authors say of fish; they also describe corn as "A Bite for Sore Eyes"), this volume presents a wealth of easily digestible knowledge for healthful eating.

This is a simple, yet excellent book for someone who wants to improve their health with healthy eating and needs to learn a little about nutrition. The big surprise for me was that the recipes appear to be quite good. Usually when a book covering nutrition includes recipes, they are average at best. Although I have not made any of the recipes in the book yet, I have been cooking long enough to know that there are some very good ones included. I was very impressed that the authors took the time to include recipes that actually will taste good, and are simple to prepare as well as being nutritional. I can guarantee from my own experience that anyone who switches from the regular American diet of sugar-laden and fried foods to a healthy diet like this, will see a significant improvement in their health. This is the diet my children and I had while they were growing up. They were almost never sick while at home, except for a rare cold (less than once every three years.) Once they were on their own, the ones who continued this diet remained healthy and the ones who started eating the regular fatty, sugary diet of most people had their health decline. Now they are all back on the healthy eating and their health reflects it. And the food - it tastes great. Once you start eliminating fatty fried foods and sugar, you will wonder how you ever ate it in the first place.

I rate this book 5 stars because it is full of information and easy on the eyes.
It reads like a dictionary of foods - includes nutritional benefits, how to purchase and store the food item, and even a recipe to make with each food. Today I used the book at work to read about and discuss the benefits of apples with my clients!

I enjoy this book at home for personal use and I share it with coworkers and impress people with random food knowledge! It has helped me diversify my diet too.

I also use it at work where I educate people with disabilities - we discuss nutrition of an ingredient and make the recipes. :)

I would recommend this book for anyone who is interested in learning about the miracles of food and basic nutrition...the natural medicines in life.

BTW: Information is brief but definitely useful

I think this is a useful book with some useful information in it. I am not sure how much of it I will use, but it will be handy to have as a reference book if I need it. I am happy with my purchase.

I was reading this book and I consider this book a life saver. If only people meditate and take care of themselves we all can live long enough to see our grandchildren and why not our great grand children. I lost my mother, she was only 65. I strongly believe that cancer can be defeat. We sometimes eat too much of one kind of food and forget about the others. If we have a balance diet everyday we live longer. Recommend this book to people who never give up in life.

1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible.....
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on March 25, 2010
I bought this book after reading many reviews on similar books but well, was I wrong to do it..... My first mistake was to buy it used but I always thought that it would be exactly the same book as mentioned on the details.... well, mine is 3 years older! Is the information different, maybe as advice on nutrition changes rather fast! I find that Amazon should state that on the sellers details about a book, not fair to have someone save a bit of money thinking one is buying the same book while that is not correct! As I said I have no idea whether the information on both editions is the same but it is very outdated anyway and the writers seem to think that they need to patronize people in order to pass on the information because that is the only way they would ever understand it. Terrible.... many times I don't know whether to laugh or to throw the book away. First I even wondered whether it had been written for children or maybe people who have problems understanding normal language..... I read the comments on Amazon.com and I find that the four people highly over rate this book but then you never know whether they are genuine. Anyway, they got an extra person to buy it: Me!

As far as the information goes, I haven't finished reading it yet but they talk quite a bit about canned soup, for example, which I don't think it is a good example of healthy food, milk products which in the meanwhile doesn't have a good name anymore, whipped cream for example and the recipes (in case you needed any anyway) are not worth much. I won't say that there isn't some useful information but I wish that I had bought a more up to date book and also a more serious one. Another inconvenient is that this book is very big (therefore the say it is huge!), difficult to take somewhere or to read in bed for example, very heavy but there is no need for it. Why make the print so big, the pages so thick and the cover so heavy? I had never heard of this guy Jerry Baker but I can tell you one thing.... I won't be buying one of his books any time soon. The subject is interesting though so I would love to buy a really good book but I don't know whether I will be able to trust the comments or Amazon again. One really should be told if a used book is outdated or not! If I ever buy a used book through Amazon again I will contact the vendor and check the date!

3.0 out of 5 stars Useful information as far as it goes.

This book has all the information you could need on 'good for you' fruits and veggies - except one,. In all of the nutritional breakdowns, both for recipes and information, there is absolutely no mention of sugar content - not even when sugar is added to the recipes. This was such disappointment because I am a diabetic and rely on such information. The front of the book actually includes Diabetes, so this missing info is a puzzle!!!
