- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2012This is the best book I have ever seen on explaining the nature and background of the masks made by the NW coasts First Nations people.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 13, 2014Was a gift liked very much
- Reviewed in the United States on July 16, 2022I had the deep misfortune of buying this, and the even greater misfortune of actually reading this. It contains no information of any substance that could possibly be useful in distinguishing one mask from another. I had a headache after the first 60 pages of the author endlessly repeating the same information over and over.
To the degree he offers anything beyond speculation, he is quick to introduce enough qualifying language to nullify the entire sentence. By the end of the book, he has done this so thoroughly he has nullified the entire point of reading the book.
The weak distinctions between tribes he attempts to draw are easily rebuffed by a cursory google image search. Perhaps in 1994 before google his fever rant would have more credibility. This is clearly written by someone with deep appreciation for Northwestern Coast Native Americans, but I didn't expect to buy fan fiction.
Frankly, I consider this a fraud on the Native American scholarship and history. I had assigned this book as reading and will now be furiously writing emails rescinding this in an attempt at damage control. I have wasted my time (and gained a considerable headache to boot), hopefully I can save the same fate of my employees.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2009This is a really nice book on local Indian art, with a combination of good, hard information and some good illustrations.
