- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2018Love that there is a resource explicitly for helping connect one of the most natural components of the English language to ASL. It really challenges you to think "how would I sign that" and prepares you to portray your message with a high level of accuracy.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 23, 2016I love it.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 29, 2017This book is a must have! The English language is a struggle even for people who grew up with it as their native language. To be able to understand and explain what someone means by their word choice can be a struggle. This book is designed for you to succeed in your word and register choices. This book has helped me expand my vocabulary from normal dictionary usage to a broader, more varied useage. I have found that my own word choices has expanded and that my ability to truly understand a word and what its meaning is has also grown. A must have for all interpreters.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 25, 2023These Yellow ASL Books from Cartwright and Bahleda are for ASL instructors who read/speak English, have advanced ASL skills, and that need lesson plan activities for an ASL class that they would be teaching. This series is not for ASL learners or ASL instructors who are deaf as it is all written in English without any illustrations and very little instruction or explanations. The book description and back cover is extremely misleading as this book is for Advanced ASL students/Professional Instructors/Interpreters and NOT "perfect for use with beginning to intermediate American Sign Language students." The Multiple Meanings book is not even really great for ALS instructors as the activities are few (3 ideas/units for the whole book) and not all that creative. It takes the same lesson idea for each unit and basically repeats them for different sign vocabulary lists for the entire unit. This books has 7 pages total of instruction/explanation of activities and 81 pages WITH NO ASL SIGNS, PICTURES, or ILLUSTRATIONS. Do not buy this if you a beginning/intermediate signer, are Deaf, or can not read English. There are no instructional materials in this that you could photo copy or any links to any useful material. It may save an ASL instructor some time creating organized lists (Food, Places, Jobs, etc.), but that is it. You would be better off getting an ASL dictionary which shows multiple meanings with pictures of each ASL sign and play around with your own made up activities for the homophones for each sign. A price above $5.00 for this book is shameful waste of money.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 29, 2018This book is great for someone who is confident in ASL structure/ linguistics and wants more practice to build their skill but it does not have an answer key nor does it have enough examples for a student to work through this book independently. If you have a study buddy, a study group or a mentor to let you know if you're going in the wrong direction with your sentence structure and sign choices then this book could be a great benefit.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 14, 2016In the English Language: "A word can have a thousand meanings." However, in American Sign Language, one Sign could have a multitude of English descriptive words or phrases. Knowing how to take the context of how a sign is used in an ASL sentence is vital to the translation process from ASL Signing to English Voice Interpreting. This textbook does exactly that. It gives lessons and activities that aid in teaching the basic understanding of how to expand on the many possible meanings of ASL Signs and apply them in a classroom situation. It is a wonderful example of practical knowledge as well as something to hold onto for future reference. I have used this book from cover to cover and I highly recommend this book for first year ASL Students.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 27, 2017This book is especially helpful if you're someone like me who struggles a bit with multiple meanings. It breaks the meanings down for you so you can really understand what they mean in English, and are then able to put them back out onto your hands in ASL. It provides great perspective as to how complex and confusing the English language can be. For someone who's first language is ASL and not English, such words and phrases can be confusing. It's important to fully understand them in English before converting them to ASL. Great for interpreting students just starting out.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 20172.5 stars. As far as the examples used, I would give this book 5+ stars. However, if you buy it for self-study, I would give it 0 starts. It's essentially worthless for self-study because it has no glossing to show you how the phrases are signed using ASL. You'd be guessing with no way or knowing if what you're doing is correct. I actually gave it to my teacher for classroom use.
