Important information

The work of Rosita Arvigo and Michael Balik to bring the knowledge of the Mayan healers to the Western reader deserves due credit. This revised and enlarged second edition includes much additional information about the major herbs in the Mayan pharmacopeia. Their work proves that the rainforest has more value to mankind alive than cut down!
About the authors
Dr. Rosita Arvigo, DN, is a native of Chicago and a naprapathic physician, herbalist, international lecturer and author. She has lived in remote areas of Mexico and Belize for more than forty years. There, she studied with many traditional healers including Don Elijio Panti, the renowned Maya shaman of Belize, and midwife/herbalist Hortence Robinson. Both of her teachers were recipients of the coveted National Living Treasure Award.
Rosita and her husband, Dr. Greg Shropshire, founded Ix Chel Tropical Research Centre in Belize. The organization is dedicated to the preservation and study of medicinal plants of the rainforest. They founded the Belize Association of Traditional Healers; Bush Medicine Camp for children; The Rainforest Medicine Trail; and Rainforest Remedies, an herbal concentrate company. In 1987, they founded the Belize Ethnobotany project with Dr. Michael Balick of the New York Botanical Garden
Rosita is the founder of The Arvigo Institute, which trains practitioners in the Arvigo Techniques of Maya Abdominal Therapy and Maya Spiritual Healing. Now retired from clinical practice, Rosita focuses on teaching and writing. She divides her time between Belize, Mexico and Chicago.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 4, 2024It’s a resourceful book!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 26, 2020I live in Panama, and this book is a wonderful and well used part of my well being! I do wish there were color photos if the plants, but with the help of friends, I have found many of the plants she describes. I found many of the remedies really work so much better than "the pills" my Drs prescribed!! The asthma I have struggled with all my life is finally under control, and I am so much healthier overall! I suggest you buy all 3 books to really understand the use of these plants.....It's worth it!!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2015Great information and very detailed but the illustrations are just black and white sketches. It would have been really nice to have photos of the plants or at least colored sketches. A lot of plants look the same in black and white so it would be easy to get them mixed up in the jungle.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 16, 2014I found many treatments I plan to keep in mind for the future. The book is an enjoyable read & if one is interested in healing outside of the medical establishment, this is a good quick quide. It even includes a source for the herbs & plants called for in the remedies. But in reality the other 2 books by this author are needed to go along with this reference book.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 25, 2014We visited throughout Belize in 2014 and the Medicine trail at the Hotel grounds that the mentioned Shaman had planted, used and shared his knowledge with this author. Sadly the trail has not been maintained by the hotel and they charge about $5US for a tour with a guide. Almost all kids in Belize seem to know these plants from a general tourist perspective but lack any experience in dosing or application. Here is the plant it is called saw palmetto....it is for your prostate.
The Belize Mayan people did not have very nice things to say about the author of this book. We found everyone in Belize has an Uncle or Grandpa that is a Shaman. All had similar stories attesting to a goodwill agreement for sharing the knowledge and that a promise to help Mayan people was severed and not honored upon the Healer's death. They state the Author has made commercial profit in Belize without sharing education back into the community. That is the Belize side and she has her story I am sure.
The book is not very scientifically backed or supported but is a very general guide. It would be next to impossible to I.D. any plants with the drawing in this book. The description of this book is from my wife a Family MD, Homeopathic and Herbal Medicine trained physician.
