Walking Portland: 30 Tours of Stumptown's Funky Neighborhoods, Historic Landmarks, Park Trails, Farmers Markets, and B Paperback – April 9, 2013
Purchase options and add-ons
In Walking Portland, devoted local Becky Ohlsen guides you through the Rose City's many charms, from idyllic waterfront fountains to the more obscure and out-of-the-way pockets of cool. On each walk, you'll discover hidden gardens, historic landmarks, award-winning restaurants, old-school taverns, oddball shops, and edgy warehouse galleries in some of the Northwest's most exciting neighborhoods. You'll cross bridges and graveyards, wander a Smithsonian-honored boulevard, see experiments in urban renewal (some inspiring, some dubious) and be regaled with stories of the city's colorful past. Whether you're looking for a leisurely stroll full of shopping and snacks or a vigorous trek over tree-covered hillsides, grab this book, step outside and . . . walk Portland.

About the author

Becky Ohlsen is a freelance writer based in Portland, Oregon, and Rye, Colorado. She writes about travel and outdoor adventures, usually in places where it rains a lot: Sweden, Oregon, Washington. She can barely ride a bicycle but has crossed the US by motorcycle more than once. She likes new camping gear, old kung fu movies, and books about sentences.
Becky's newly revised and updated edition of BACKPACKING OREGON, the classic guidebook created by Douglas Lorain, will be published in 2025. She has also updated Lorain's ONE NIGHT WILDERNESS - PORTLAND -- a fun, practical guide to short overnight backpacking trips within easy reach of Portland, geared toward those of us who love getting out into nature but can't realistically commit to a week-long backpacking adventure every summer. Both books describe a range of backpacking trips to some of the most beautiful backcountry spots in the Pacific Northwest, with maps, photos and various ratings for each.
Her outdoor guidebooks also include WALKING PORTLAND, an oddball guide to exploring Portland's neighborhoods (Wilderness Press), and an updated edition of BEST TENT CAMPING - OREGON.
Becky also researched and wrote STOCKHOLM POCKET PRECINCTS (Hardie Grant Travel), a visually inspiring, personal and subjective guidebook to the neighborhoods of her favorite city.
Between assignments, Becky continues to peck away at a book about motorcycles and the allure of risk. For a few years she raced a vintage Honda 175 at Portland International Raceway (very slowly). In 2009 the infamous Portland "555" crew granted Becky permission to ride with them as an embedded reporter, on a tiny 30-year-old motorcycle, from Portland to Knoxville, Tenn.; the story appeared in CYCLE WORLD magazine (April 2010). Having survived the trip, she was invited to join the SFRC (Sang-Froid Riding Club) and has been a club member ever since.
Becky spends a lot of time roaming around; she co-authored Lonely Planet's coffee-table book THE VANLIFE COMPANION. She has a probably ill-advised master’s degree in journalism from NYU’s Cultural Reporting and Criticism program and has occasionally taught journalism. Her favorite writers include John McPhee, Kelly Link, Laird Hunt, Geoff Dyer, Steve Aylett, Lydia Millet, Torgny Lindgren, Tove Jansson, Willy Vlautin, Patrick DeWitt and plenty of others. A recovering copy editor, Becky will debate points of grammar with anyone, anytime.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2017These books are fantastic. We live in LA and just keep the book in the car and use it all the time for walks on the weekend. Though they are much more applicable to residents, we took this with us on our first trip to Portland and it really helped us generate some itineraries for the days.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 26, 2014Same comments and critiques as I provided for Seattle. I do like it so much that I'm getting the SF one too. I think it will be a great way to learn the city and I like that it gives you walks that will link together and places to stop for a drink or bite to eat. I'll know more after I use it on an upcoming trip. My only wish is that they provided one large map of Portland with the various walks highlighted, to give you an overall layout of the city and walks, and perspective so you know where these "neighborhoods" are in relation to one another. For people who are not familiar with the city - like me.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2013I laughed, I cried and I wept with joy while reading this fantasic book about walking in Portland. Ohlsen has a deep knowledge of where to go and what to do. A must read for anyone planning a trip to Portland, or anyone living in Portland that wants to discover new spots.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2015If you want a guide book to tell you the best place to eat or drink in a certain area, this is not the guide book for you. We only had 2.5 days in Portland so we wanted information right then and there. I feel this would be a good book if you had ample time to explore and wander. It would have been helpful if there was a neighborhood guide at the very least.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2013I just spent a wonderful week in Portland and really feel that I know the city. The walking tours and all the special tips on what to see and where to eat were wonderful. I liked the historical tidbits all through the book.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 5, 2016A great way to get to know the city, whether you are there to do the walks, or still in your armchair in Missouri wondering why everyone says Portland is so cool. P.S. - It is.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2017I like the concept of this book and it's an enjoyable read but unfortunately, some of the places in it have closed (Backspace, 24 hr Church of Elvis, and Ping listed in tour #1 and the Museum of Contemporary Craft in tour #3 are a few). It's still enough info to get you started but you'll want to do some googling before you head out if you do choose to take one of the routes listed. Alternately, it's not bad for someone for who just wants a little structure to an idle wander or who is traveling via online map rather than in person and doesn't object to finding that a place is now something different than what it once was.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 21, 2013Prior to scanning this little volume, i had no real interest in visiting the Portland area.
Now, we need to make a special trip to the area!
