- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2019I really enjoy using this method. As a teacher, I've found younger students enjoy this more than traditional primer books. Lots of fun activities to teach rhythm and intervals.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2016A wonderful beginning to piano lessons! Of course, the teacher makes all the difference - and she recommended these books to accompany her instruction.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2014Wow! I can't say enough good things about this method (the whole method, not just solos 1). The goal of this method is not only to provide a logical, incremental sequence towards piano proficiency but also to develop the student's musical ear, theory understanding, and composing ability simultaneously (vital elements of true piano proficiency, of course).
Like The Music Tree, this method teaches music reading the way a proficient pianist reads: through automatic interval recognition. Unlike The Music Tree, however, names of lines and spaces are left out until the student has solidly mastered music reading by interval. This is accomplished quite rapidly through lots of tuneful songs that each add one new concept while continuing to reinforce those previously taught (finger placements are indicated on a piano diagram during this training). I love that Book 2 continues to reinforce interval reading while introducing the names of the lines and spaces as well as all 12 keys one at a time. Teacher accompaniments are provided for many of the songs and offer a deeper musical experience for the student through intriguing harmonies and a variety of distinct musical styles. Students in this course of study become well rounded musicians indeed.
Every Unit includes aural training through "clapbacks" (teacher claps a rhythm student claps it back) and "playbacks" (teacher plays a melody using predetermined keys and the student plays it back by ear). Aural exercises start out easy and get progressively more difficult--but students do rise to the challenge! Composition and transposition are also integrated in the lessons in a highly usable fashion right from the beginning. I highly recommend purchasing the teacher's guide for this method because the units are quite long and dense and the teacher's guide provides a suggested division of the unit which logically divides the types of activities between lessons. Going page by page would not generate the intended results and you would not want to skip anything in the method--everything has a clear purpose and application and will come up again.
Celebrate Piano! incorporates the "workbook" right into the method, which is why you see a higher price tag on the method books--there is no other book to buy except the solo books. This is such a pedagogically sound practice and the writers have done a fabulous job of making every written activity completely relevant to the learning. There are no unnecessary repetitions, yet nothing is covered too scantily and the student is all-the-while manipulating current concepts in powerfully informative ways that enrich their playing, listening, composing and artistic abilities.
The only negative I have found so far is that there can be a lot to cover in one lesson and it's undesirable to divide up the units too much since you would be failing to reinforce the various elements often enough for them to sink in. I don't think of this as a huge problem, though and have found ways to reinforce the concepts when the student needed an extra week or two in a unit.
Using this method is like teaching a music class, not just a piano lesson which makes it great for teaching group lessons too. I have never had so much fun presenting a new instrument to beginners and rarely, if ever, have found myself begrudgingly assigning any portion of the unit.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 12, 2008I teach piano and think this is a great beginners series for children. Though the pictures are aimed toward younger children, the content is appropriate for all children. I have beginners in 1st through 7th grade, and am pleased with all of the material that it covers! This is my favorite series to teach from so far.
