Begun in 1938 and completed only in 1955, The Public Philosophy offers as much a glimpse into the private philosophy of America's premier journalist of the twentieth century as it does a public philosophy. The basis of Lippmann's effort is "that there is a deep disorder in our society which comes not from the machinations of our enemies and from the adversaries of the human condition but from within ourselves." He also provides a special sort of legacy to liberalism in its broadest sense - as the root approach to human existence that could provide civility and accommodation against incivilities and extremism, and that uniquely stood against the totalitarian counter-revolutions from Jacobism to Leninism. This work is a masterful defense of the public philosophy as a constitutional tradition, and can be easily read as such today.Paul Roazen, long identified with the analysis of Lippmann's work, points out that no matter how trenchantly Lippmann dissected democracy, and the populist faith in the people's wisdom, he still sought to study the world in order to help govern it. His constant flow of journalistic writing had the educative intent of raising the level of the public's knowledge. His rationalist conviction that clearheadedness on public matters can be effectively relayed to people is nowhere more evident than in The Public Philosophy. In this sense it is an argument for the democratic ideal that people can be rallied in defense of the public interest.

A Timeless insight at the psyche of politics
I feel that this book is as relevant now as it was when it was written over fifty years ago. Lippmann does a good job at looking at where American people fit into their democracy (which is more of a republic). One of the most compelling quotes in this book is: "The best education for democracy will be the one which trains, disciplines, and teaches the least." Pg. 63 Really think about what this quote is saying, then think about people ready to kill one and other about whether Democratic is right, Republican is right, Moderate is right or even if Wookie is right. Many times in this society people shoot their mouths off about elements they have no lucid or tangible ground beneath their feet to stand on, but have plenty of room to put their feet in their mouth. I was required to read this book in a graduate class, and I found it very interesting and thought provoking. Is this book everything one needs to know on politics, government, sociology and the human condition? No, but it is a great place to start. Only abstract and higher-level taxonomy thinkers need to apply.

Lippmann is rarely mentioned in the 21st Century as a great political and philosophical writer. That would have been a shock to those reading his prolific columns 75 years ago. In this, his final book, he discusses the need for an informed citizenry and the limitations of democracy as it was practiced in the 1950's. His observations on the dangers of Jacobinism and Leninism on each polar end of the spectrum and in the importance of an active, knowledgeable society resonate as much today as they did 70 years ago. A good read.

Walter Lippmann reacquaints us with the basics of democracy. If you are looking for "sound bites" this book isn's a good place to start. If you want to get beyond "partisian" and on to principles, this is a good place to start. I'm starting my re-read--because I don't think I could take in sufficently with a single read, for it is a rich, relevant, and thought provoking book!

this book is covered with different highlighters, underlines, bracketing, scribbles. I paid some $ 25 dollars to get it delivered to my mail box and it is really a piece of abominable junk which makes reading the book extremely difficult. however, the words written by lippmann are well worth reading, just the same. an excellent and insightful book on the mass media and what effects it has on the public.

A charming mystery that skims along joyfully!!!!! I wih the hero had been less obviously straight, but I know why Vida/Box is writting this way!!!!

Walter Lippmann is one of my favorite non-fiction writers. He is a brilliant man, and his work has contributed greatly to the modern American political landscape. It's sad to see this book going out of print. Few tomes grant such insight into the fundamental weaknesses of democratic nations. In an age where the United States is the undisputed military power, some have confused democracy with god. It seems democracy is a word thrown around carelessly as a cure all for the world's ills. The Public Philosophy stays true to the Founding Father's fears that a democratic majority is capable of being as oppressive as a monarch. I highly recommend this book to any serious student of political science.
