About the author

Patrick O’Brien is the author and illustrator of thirteen books for children. He specializes in wildlife (from prehistoric to current day) as well as historic subjects, but his most recent book looks into the future of space travel. All these interests are combined in his science fiction adventure series about dinosaurs in space.
O’Brien earned a degree in biology from the University of Virginia in 1982, then went on to art school at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has been a freelance illustrator since 1986, working for clients such as National Geographic, The Discovery Channel, The Smithsonian, and The American Museum of Natural History. His artwork has appeared in magazines and newspapers, on posters and greeting cards, and even on billboards. In 2008, a production team for The History Channel filmed O’Brien working in his studio for a documentary about recreating dinosaurs.
In addition to creating children’s books, O’Brien paints historical maritime scenes for sale in galleries.
O’Brien is a part-time professor of illuatration at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 5, 2011I picked this up on a whim because I am a Patrick O'Brian fan (think Master and Commander, etc). The author of The Making of a Knight spells his name differently, but he has a similar ability as a writer.
Although I've been an Amazon customer since the early 1990s, this is the first product I've ever reviewed. This book is that good! It's the kind of book your kids or grandkids will want to have read to them over and over. Great story; beautiful artwork. Nicely done!
And it doesn't hurt that you'll enjoy reading it too.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 24, 2012My son loves this book and so do I! He's only four but wants to be a knight and loves all the great information and lovely drawings of the medieval armor, swords, castles and horses. It's not a short read, but balances story and content. This is by far the best book on the middle ages for this age. We're buying more for his friends' birthday gifts!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2018Bought 2 copies of this book, one for my son and one for his friend's bday. They both loved it and I think it was a nice read which included some good values for kids. I also appreciate that it's something more traditional to look up to/read about that escapes the super-hero/dinosaur/pokemon type material (nothing wrong with those - but it's nice to see something different and old school every once in a while). The books quality is good (paperback) and I'm sure we will be getting more of these in the future because I feel they make nice gifts.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2014This is one of my four year old daughter's favorite books. It is well written, well illustrated, reasonably accurate from a historical perspective, and doesn't pull any punches of what Knighthood entailed.
It's in our regular book rotation, which is great as it helps offset the Princess a garbage hawked by Disney.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2018I bought this for my grandson who is, at present, a bit too young to appreciate the text. Still, the beautiful and detailed illustrations should be enough hold his interests until he gets a bit older. Wish that this book had been around when I was a boy--it would have been my favorite of all time.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2012We purchased this book for a homeschool unit on knights. It was a good combo of story and information if you are looking for education. Probably would not suit your needs if you are looking for a "reading for pleasure" book, but was great for my son who preferrs non fiction.
