Millions have caught Karl Marx's vision of a New Man and a New Society. "Paul presents a greater vision still," writes John Stott. In his letter to the Ephesians the apostle "sees the human predicament as something even deeper than the injustice of the economic structure and so propounds a yet more radical solution. He writes of nothing less than a 'new creation.'" John Stott expounds Paul's theme of uniting all things in Christ by uniting his church and breaking down all that separates us from God, one ethnic group from another, husband from wife, parent from child, master from slave. A book for all who want to build the church into the new society God has planned it to be.

About the Author

John R. W. Stott (1921-2011) has been known worldwide as a preacher, evangelist and communicator of Scripture. For many years he served as rector of All Souls Church in London, where he carried out an effective urban pastoral ministry. A leader among evangelicals in Britain, the United States and around the world, Stott was a principal framer of the landmark Lausanne Covenant (1974). His many books have sold millions of copies around the world and in dozens of languages. Stott's best-known work, Basic Christianity, has sold two million copies and has been translated into more than 60 languages. Other titles include The Cross of Christ, Understanding the Bible, The Contemporary Christian, Evangelical Truth, Issues Facing Christians Today, The Incomparable Christ, Why I Am a Christian and Through the Bible Through the Year, a daily devotional. He has also written eight volumes in The Bible Speaks Today series of New Testament expositions. Whether in the West or in the Two-Thirds World, a hallmark of Stott's ministry has been expository preaching that addresses the hearts and minds of contemporary men and women. Stott was honored by Time magazine in 2005 as one of the "100 Most Influential People in the World" and was named in the Queen?s New Years Honours list as Commander of the Order of the British Empire. In 1969, Stott founded the Langham Trust to fund scholarships for young evangelical leaders from the Majority World. He then founded the Evangelical Literature Trust, which provided books for students, pastors and theological libraries in the Majority World. These two trusts continued as independent charities until 2001, when they were joined as a single charity: the Langham Partnership. Langham's vision continues today to see churches in the Majority World equipped for mission and growing to maturity in Christ through nurturing national movements for biblical preaching, fostering the creation and distribution of evangelical literature, and enhancing evangelical theological education.

John Stott’s wealth of knowledge adds a tremendous amount to the commentary. It’s like sitting in a room having a conversation with a theologian. The author actually poses the questions you are thinking and then proceeds to offer the answer. Well done.

Ephesians, next to Romans is the best of Pauline writings. John Stott make the application to our times in a most cogent fashion. His discussion of the nuclear family is classic.

I purchased this book for a sermon series I'm doing on Ephesians. It was highly recommended by two friends. I am

happy with the book, but have to give it a four star rating

because I've found some explanations of Greek text, for example

the Ephesians 2:1 claim that trespasses and sins were the

equivalent of commission/omission do not stand up under scrutiny.

The lexicons I checked and the scholars I contacted did not concur with Stott's claim. He provides no support for this popular definition of sins and trespasses. For a commentary dealing with the Greek text, I was a bit disappointed with that.

This is the first time I've had this experience with Stott's stuff. The main reason I like his commentaries is that his

stuff provides good summaries that preach well.

I think overall this commentary is very good, but one must check the scholarship. For Ephesians so far I've found the best on

the Greek text is FF Bruce's commentary NICNT. He rightly identifies Eph 2:1 trespasses and sins as synonyms.

Out of all the commentaries I've purchased or read for Ephesians I would rate FF Bruce highest, Stott second and O'Brien third.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great scholar on a great book
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 28, 2015
Stott is one of the greatest preachers and Bible teachers of his/our generation. Here is a scholarly yet completely readable commentary on Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians. Ephesians is, of course, one of the great mountain peaks of the New Testament: crammed with inspiration and profound teaching. Stott brings to it a life-time's study and experience and makes the epistle live. I used it as a study aid for preaching and personal learning. You may just want to revel in all it has to share. There are too few teachers and writers of the calibre of John Stott, and I only wish I had found him and read him years earlier. Don't make my mistake; read him now.

There are three types of commentaries, the easy read, entry level, medium grade with references to the original Greek or Hebrew languages and the heavy duty. These Message group of commentaries are always medium grade, never frivolous, always relevant, The supplier was very quick, would recommend.
