The Message of Amos (The Bible Speaks Today Series) Paperback – August 10, 1984
Purchase options and add-ons
"Affluence, exploitation and the profit motive were the most notable features of the society which Amos observed and in which he worked . . . "Standards had gone to pot. Authority and the rule of law were despised, and national leadership, while reeling in the publicity and dignity of position . . . Seemed to be contributing to the complete breakdown of law and order." Thus J. A. Motyer exposes and explains the astonishingly relevant--but never popular--message of the prophet Amos. Michael Green says, "Alec Motyer has clearly got the spirit of Amos in his blood. He loves the prophet from Tekoa, and takes endless pains to give full weight to every syllable of the prophecy. He is, of course, a distinguished scholar, and we are given full value on that front; but you will find here none of the dreary academic deadness which all too often comes through in commentary work."

- Reviewed in the United States on March 7, 2018I love the easy reading of this book. Mr. Motyer brings great depth of understanding in an easily understood communication style. This book is so relevent to the great needs of today's church in the USA. I wish every believer would read it and take the warning of Amos seriously. Being covered by grace is not an exemption of reaping what we sow.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 24, 2022With this book, I learned from Mr Motyer, and ultimately from the prophet Amos, that membership in a religious outfit will not necessarily save you. You have to live a life of obedience, and you have to be a moral and ethical person. Furthermore, the prophets, when they appear, they appear for a reason: they are bound by duty to preach the Gospel. As listeners of the Word, our unavoidable duty is to repent, and convert. In other words, we have to submit ourselves to God.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2009Mr. Motyer is an exceptional Bible scholar. Simply reading the book of Amos can be "challenging." Mr. Motyer brings the book to life. This commentary isn't just a look at something that might have been interesting during the time of Amos, it's a valid and usful comment on the condition of our church today. He's very lucid, and a true delight to read.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 23, 2007Well thought out and well organized commentary on the book of Amos. This book as been a helpful aid in my preparation of sermons in Amos. It also should be a good concise Bible study aid to the layman or Sunday school teacher who desires to teach from the prophet without getting bogged down in lengthy commentary. It is concise, pracitcal, to the point and clear. However, it does not contain any analysis of the original language or literary structure of the prophecy.
