Caesar: De Bello Gallico I (Latin Edition) Paperback – June 1, 1991
Purchase options and add-ons
Book I of Caesar's Commentaries on the Gallic War starts with an account of Gaul and goes on to cover Caesar's defeat of first the Helvetians and then the Germans under Ariovistus. The Introduction to this edition of the Latin text, first published in 1957, gives background information on the Rome of Caesar's time, on Caesar himself and on the composition and reliability of his commentaries, on Gaul, and on the Roman Army. Useful maps are provided, along with Notes on the text, Index of names, and a Vocabulary.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2009This book is very well put together and it seems like there is alot of reading but only about 40-45 pages of the book are in Latin. The glossary at the back is very helpful especially because there are words which weren't taught in first year Latin. The notes are helpful except when there is a difficult passage in the text and it looks like Ewan will translate it but he just gives very vague hints at what it might mean. Other than that, I recommend this book for reading Latin and it even has a map of the time period in the front of the book.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 4, 2011Caesar :De Bello Gallico I will be a great text for this semester.
The price was reasonable, and the book in good condition. I will tell my students to order it from Amazon. Thank you for making this text available .
- Reviewed in the United States on February 17, 2017The first 27 pages of this usewd book were missing. This
book is printed in the Latin language - which is exactly
what I wanted - having studied Latin for three years in
Catholic High school. I read this work then - but that was
65 years ago,in Latin.
My only exposure now to the language is at Mass on
Sundays.
I looked forward to reading it now, but the missing pages
contained a students guide to 3rd year Latin, which I
NEED.
SEEMS i HAVE LOST A LOT IN THOSE YEARS. .
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2010The Latin text is quite short and the book is mostly explanations in English. I think you are better off to buy an English book that explains the war in Gaul and the Latin text separately. De Bello Gallico: Complete Edition (Latin Edition) is just $14.90 and it contains all SEVEN of Caesar's books and the EIGHTH book by Hirtius. This plus an English book about the war will add up to around $30. If you buy all seven Colin Ewan books you'll end up paying around $130!
Another interesting choice is a parallel text that features an English translation next to the Latin text: De Bello Gallico: Parallel Text English - Latin
- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2014This is a good text. The lack of macrons becomes rather frustrating at times but Caesar is easy enough that it doesn't really matter. Good intermediate level text.

The text is complete, but the copy is fairly grubby.

4.0 out of 5 stars
