Seven Forges Paperback – September 24, 2013
Purchase options and add-ons
Captain Merros Dulver is the first in many lifetimes to find a path beyond the great mountains of the Seven Forges and encounter, at long last, the half-forgotten race who live there. And it would appear that they were expecting him. But when he returns home, an entourage of strangers in tow, he starts to wonder if his discovery is truly something to celebrate—for the gods of this lost race are the gods of war, and their memories of that far-off cataclysm have not faded.
The people of Fellein have lived with the legends of the Blasted Lands for many centuries. Lying far to the north, the Lands are a desolate, impassable place—the legacy of an ancient time of cataclysm. But even the dangers of the Blasted Lands cannot stop the occasional expedition into its fringes, where people search for any trace of the ancients and oft-rumored riches that once lived there.

Review
- Publishers Weekly(August 19, 2013)
“Seven Forges is an excellent, enjoyable, and thoroughly entertaining fantasy debut into a new world of swords and sorcery, complete with romance, intrigue, and danger.”
– Attack of the Books
“Wow, that twist. In some ways I think I should have seen it coming, and I kind of did, butSeven Forges just lulled me into security and BAM! Craziness!”
– Anya, On Starships and Dragonwings
“Seven Forges is a well written fantasy adventure with a very interesting premise and a big world to explore. ”
– Celticfrogreviews
“I thoroughly enjoyed Seven Forges although I was left speechless by the ending and left wondering for days whether there was to be another book in the series. There were so many threads of stories left open that I need to know what happens next.”
– The Bookish Outsider
“Moore does a fantastic job of building worlds and characters in Seven Forges as we hop on board the train that is about to meet its doom.”
– Troubled Scribe
“James A. Moore dedicates Seven Forges in part ‘to the memory of Fritz Leiber and Robert E. Howard for the inspiration.’ That dedication sets the bar high, and caused me a bit of readerly apprehension, because so many writers have imitated badly those two greats of the sword and sorcery tradition. Moore is far more than an imitator, though. He does some fresh, counterintuitive things with the genre conventions. More than once, he startled me into saying out loud, ‘I didn’t see that coming.'”
– Black Gate
“Hell, I couldn’t get enough.”
– Amanda J Spedding
"Rating: I LOVED IT."

About the author

“James A. Moore is the new prince of grimdark fantasy. His work is full of dark philosophy and savage violence, desperate warriors and capricious gods. This is fantasy for people who like to wander nighttime forests and scream at the moon. Exhilarating as hell."
—Christopher Golden, New York Times bestselling author of SNOWBLIND and ARARAT
“Gripping, horrific, and unique, James Moore continues to be a winner, whatever genre he’s writing in. Well worth your time.”
– Seanan McGuire, New York Times bestselling author of the InCryptid and Toby Daye series
James A. Moore’s, The Last Sacrifice, the 1st book in The Tides of War series, delivers on every level. A pulse quickening dark fantasy ripe with fascinating, multifaceted heroes and villains, and a vein of the horrific that barely hides, squirming just below the surface of it all. I can’t wait to see where this goes in Book 2.
Thomas E. Sniegoski – New York Times Best Selling author of The Fallen series, and the Remy Chandler books.
"You emerge from any Moore novel feeling like you've spent some time in that world––traumatised, beaten up, bloodied from battle––and The Last Sacrifice is no exception. Brilliantly imaginative, intricately drawn, this is a novel and an experience you won't forget in a hurry." - Tim Lebbon, author of The Silence and Relics
“THE LAST SACRIFICE is brilliant, devious, dark and compelling. This is epic fantasy at its very best. Highly recommended!” –Jonathan Maberry, NY Times bestselling author of KILL SWITCH and MARS ONE
JAMES A. MOORE is the author of over forty novels, including the critically acclaimed Fireworks, Under The Overtree, Blood Red, Blood Harvest, the Serenity Falls trilogy (featuring his recurring anti-hero, Jonathan Crowley) Cherry Hill, Alien: Sea of Sorrows and the Seven Forges series of novels. He has twice been nominated for the Bram Stoker Award and spent three years as an officer in the Horror Writers Association, first as Secretary and later as Vice President.
Never one to stay in one genre for too long, James has recently written epic fantasy novels in the series SEVEN FORGES (Seven Forges, the Blasted Lands, City of Wonders and The Silent Army). He is working on a new series called The Tides Of War. The first book in the series The Last Sacrifice, came out this last January and the sequel, Fallen Gods, is due out in late December. Pending novels also include A Hell Within (a Griffin & Price Novel) co-written with Charles R. Rutledge and an apocalyptic Sci-Fi novel tentatively called Spores. Why be normal?
Being a confirmed Luddite, he is working up the nerve to plunge completely into the electronic publications age.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 18, 2015This is one of the best, most enjoyable novels I’ve read in a long time, and, quite honestly, the best high fantasy novel I’ve ever read, period. The story begins in motion and never lets up. Helpful in this regard are the multiple story lines throughout the narrative, from the perilous voyage to the land called Seven Forges and the discovery of a kingdom of warriors long separated from the rest of the world, to the story of a young man cruelly beaten and maimed who gets a new chance at life, to the Sorcerer who advices, and in truth pretty much runs, the kingdom of Fellein. The characters are all very unique, especially the people/warriors of the Seven Forges. No cookie-cutter Tolkien-esque cut-outs to be found here. I found each character to be well thought-out and real and, most importantly, infinitely likeable. Moore’s brilliant writing is direct and clear, painting locations and people with concise prose that moves along and doesn’t get bogged down in its own writing. With just enough humor added in for balance, this action-packed, at times violent, novel was consistently a joy to read. As a reader, the fact that I looked forward to returning to the book every day says volumes in my mind. This is what a fantasy novel should be. I’m looking forward to the next in the series.

There are a few confusing moments with his writing, but he makes up for it with good character development and does a fine job at “setting the scene”.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2015Seven Forges has memorable characters, an interesting world, and some action; but the whole is less than the sum of its parts because the book plods along at an uneven pace. It even spoils itself with the narrator telling you "... this character won't be around to enjoy it because he's going to die."
Plot: A kingdom sends out an expedition to explore the Blasted Lands, an area destroyed in the last war by powerful magic. The expedition team battles their way through ferocious beasts and encounters a nomadic member of the Seven Forges named Drask. Drask's fighting skills are the stuff of legend and he guides them to meet his people. The Kingdom and the people of Seven Forges plan a cultural exchange. But if you read the cover of the book which reads, "War is Coming" you already know what happens and you'll have to wait about 350 pages for it to happen.
World: The world is very creative. Magic is powerful and scarce. A horrifying species of beast roam the Blasted Lands, but none venture close to the cities. Most of the story takes place within the walls of a fairly vanilla medieval kingdom. Fortunately, the nomads have a very interesting culture. This is not really a high fantasy story because the only races are humans and nomads and only one type of monster appears in the Blasted Lands, if you don't count the large beast-like mounts of the nomads.
Writing Style: Character dialogue is good. Character descriptions for half of the characters are lacking, so you can't visualize what is going on. This is a "read what happens" book. Unfortunately, the book attempts to foreshadow events and spoils them for you. So, you just end up reading and waiting for things to happen, instead of the story pulling you through the events.
Characters: The nomads are a nomadic, religious, matter of fact, warrior tribe. It's fun to read about them. There's also some witty banter between the explorers and some political posturing between the rulers and the head mage. Unfortunately, the lack of physical descriptions of some of the characters takes the fun out of visualizing the scenes.
Action: There are sword fights, monster slaying, and skirmishes. The battles are visceral and there's a fair amount of action in the book. However, it feels a bit flat because there isn't much of a struggle or arc within the fighting.
Maturity: Older Teen
There are sexual situations and violence with gore.
Overall: The ideas behind the book are well thought out. The story is compelling at the beginning and the dialogue is well written. But, it's very light on fantasy, since most of the story takes place in the kingdom. Some of the story arcs seem to drag as well. And with the narrator telling you what is going to happen before it happens to keep you hooked, the major events in the book don't have any impact. It's like watching a movie with a friend and he says, "Oh man, 15 minutes from now is the best part!!!" So, without the drama and some character descriptions missing, you can't really get into the book. It feels like a long synopsis to an interesting story is told to you, not an adventure that you experience through the characters.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2016*Original review on Goodreads and My Blog*
I loved this book so much. I had no idea I would and that was a nice little surprise. I fell in love with Drask Silver Hand who is from a race of ancient humans called the Sa'ba Taalor. Now I don't always understand a lot of things that go on in fantasy books. This one was not so bad but I think there will be more things explained in the next books.
There are some wonderful characters in the book and the idea of these people and their beasts are just too cool. But something is just not right in this world. There is someone scheming and causes major problems and I hope it all ends okay but you know these epic fantasy books are, don't like anyone for too long just in case.
The way this one ended I'm a little anxious to read the next book but I'm ready to buy all of them that are out now and see where this series is going.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 18, 2015I was really quite impressed with this. I stumbled into it based on a combination of an Amazon recommendation, an open wifi connection, nice looking cover art, and nothing better to do. At $4 it was a steal, even if I'd only amused myself with it for an hour and never finished it. However, I found myself sinking quite readily into a setting that seemed quite well-realized, with just the right combination of action, mystery, and oracular overtones. It starts off seeming like it's going to be a standard "chosen one" type fantasy tropefest, but quickly disabuses the reader of that notion and then goes on to set up what promises to be a thoroughly interesting series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Aufregend anders!!

3.0 out of 5 stars Needs more editing
Please, please, please hire a better editor. The book was still enjoyable but the painfully bad editing really ruined what could otherwise be a great book.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Good Book
Well written with an interesting and original storyline. The characters come across well and the plot and action are well paced. I shall be reading the next.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit of a cheat!
I liked this book, I really liked it. It had the perfect pace, right amount of mystery and snarky and if some word choices were completely out of place then so be it. It was overall pretty enjoyable. Which is why it came as a bit of a nasty surprise when the book was over after 300 pages rather than the advertised 400. Another 50 pages were dedicated to a sneak for book 2 and the rest to a completely different series. I hate when people do that, so I'm taking a full star off for that. The story itself could have had 4.5. But the Kindle edition is a rip off.
