Asklepios was the gentle Greek god of healing. Like Christ, he was said to have walked the earth performing miracle cures. His medicine was practiced by priests who interpreted patients' dreams in which the god gave advice. Dr. Tick's classic work explores dream-healing techniques from this ancient tradition.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

From his practice of treating severely traumatized Vietnam veterans in the late '70s and '80s, psychotherapist Edward Tick came to believe that traditional Western medicine could not adequately heal deeply wounded souls and he embarked on an exploration of healing practices worldwide. His search brought him to ancient Greece and what he claims are the roots of modern medicine. In The Practice of Dream Healing: Bringing Ancient Greek Mysteries into Modern Medicine, Tick (Sacred Mountain) introduces readers to the Greek mythological figure of Asklepios, who was believed to be the first spiritual healer or psychiatrist and to those today who practice his spiritual healing methodology, including a cardiologist turned psychiatrist and a Christian priest. Tick takes readers along on the healing journeys he has experienced and witnessed in others. Agent, Susan Schulman. 25-city author tour.

I purchased this book for a book club program. It was in excellent condition and was just what I needed for this program!

Just fabulous! Edward Tick inspired me to visit the land of Greece and learn more about Asclepius, Chiron and healing my own wounds. Chiron and Asclepius both live on in our consciousness as the archetype of the Wounded Healer. One of the best books I have ever read about how we might bring healing to ourselves, to our nation, and to our world! With all my heart, I thank Edward Tick for his lifework and for writing this magnificent book to inspire us all! May we each become a blessing to all those whose lives we touch!

I would add now some years later since I wrote this review, that the Kindle customer (therapist) who wrote that he found the book Disturbing, wondering if this was some kind of cult and if boundaries were crossed with clients, I would suggest he might want to read more about the life of Asclepius as well as Jung’s understanding of the unconscious. Misunderstanding can arise from not having enough information, direct experience with the material and having a conversation with the author and participants.

I carried this book with me on my sacred journey to Greece. I then went back to train with Dr. Edward Tick in Asklepian Dream Healing. This book and his journeys have been a profound healing experience for me personally and professionally. Thank you Ed for delivering these sacred ancient healing tools to our world.

There are five five-star reviews of this book already, but I'm adding a sixth. This is not because I am cowed by the opinions of the others-- it's just that they are all completely right! Read their reviews. They cover a lot of good points.

Let me add one other amazing feature: Too often, when we read about myth, we get pallid, flattened descriptions. TIck describes how the cult differed over time and place, enriching the book immeasurably!
