The Goal of Marriage (Intimate Marriage) Paperback – May 25, 2005
Purchase options and add-ons
What is marriage for? How does God answer that question? Dan B. Allender and Tremper Longman III have together written this inductive Bible study guide to help couples build healthy and happy marriages. Through six study sessions for individuals, couples or groups, they lead you through an overview of their model for marriage, following the "leave, weave, cleave" imagery of the Bible: leave your parents, weave a life together and cleave to each other. Intimate Marriage Bible studies bring spouses into deeper communion with God and with each other. In marriage a man and a woman are called to leave their families of origin, to weave their individual lives into a unity and to cleave to each other. How can fallen human beings even begin to contemplate this ideal--God's ideal? These studies will help you take small but real steps toward honoring the image of God in each other and living out God's goal for marriage. As you explore and respond to Scripture together, you will discover strength and beauty in your marriage and become even more intimate companions.

Review
"Allender and Longman assert that marriage transformation requires deep and frequent encounters with the gospel, facing the truth about God, others and about ourselves. That's a far cry from the 3-steps-to-a-better-marriage advice we have been swallowing for years, to no avail. This material is real food for marriages that hunger for honesty, intimacy, spiritual depth and lifelong fulfillment.
"Every marriage needs this series--including mine. But working on your marriage alone is hard. That's why the interactive DVD and small group components put this series in a league of its own. Pursuing marital growth in community with other like-minded journeyers will make this experience powerful and deeply rewarding. Use it together to enhance the most exciting, yet challenging, relationship on the planet."

- Reviewed in the United States on February 10, 2007We have worked through two books in our small group in this series: The Goal of Marriage and Forgiveness. Each chapter in the series is lead by scripture, has a very short related DVD vignette and a number of questions related to the main topic. The only complaint we've encountered by the six couples in our group is that the DVD segments for each chapter are to short. Otherwise they universally have loved studying the series as it is both challenging and teaches use how to love our spouse more deeply, and love God together
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2010Dan Allender, so nothing against the book. It was helpful for me individually, but it turns out what I really needed was to get rid of my husband. Did that and I'm great now! Hopefully I can take some of the insights and apply it to future relationships and be more successful.
