- Reviewed in the United States on March 13, 2015Brueggemann is a great OT Bible scholar. His work on Elijah and Elisha in this book is phenomenal. Very helpful in a paper I had to write for my introductory OT class for my theology major.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2003Our distinguished Prof begins with his familiar theme,"preaching from the Old Testament raises the sticky christological issue about finishing-up Old Testament texts in reference to Jesus." This sounds familiar to those former students who heard his oft-repeated differences with Prof Brevard Childs by closing each OT sermon with connecting texts to Jesus' words. Without wasting time in the next paragraph Prof Bruegge relegates his familiar christological question to one of the ecclesial question. "I understand preaching to be the chance to summon and nurture an alternative community with an alternative identity, vision and vocation..."
Following his repeated fashion from OT Theology class he sets-up the unique parallel for an either/or alternative. His first dominant statement begins at Mount Carmel when Elijah challenges Israel: "How long will you go limping with two different opinions?" He cruises thru several texts from Joshua in dialogue about "church growth" and the community! Prof Bruegge always delivers multiple texts to support his major point of emphasis!
One of his distinguished hosts at Mercer-McAfee Self Lectures on Jeremiah, introduced him as "One who can describe the indescribable, who can explain the unexplicable and scrutinize the inscrutable!" It was John Claypool who introduced our OT Professor. He earlier noted him as a great role model who sets the example of writing the sermon text as the Interpreter and then acts out the prepared script as the Actor who speaks!
When we hear his recital of Elijah's mighty works we're likely to name our current role-models and carriers of "the Otherwise either/or alternatives, such as Clarence Jordan, who defied racism in the South; Nelson Mandela, who did not grow weary or cynical while waiting in prison; Martin Luther King, who dreamed beyond hatred..." Bruegge continues to capture the essential themes of both OT and NT in teaching thru exegesis whether class lectures or in his many-faced books which focus upon Preaching!
Recommended Highly...Retired Chaplain Fred W. Hood
- Reviewed in the United States on April 16, 2017I didn't care for this book at all. After all of the 5 star reviews (written by people whom I assume were students or personal friends) I had high expectations for this and was disappointed.
First off, the book is quite short. 129 pages with every chapter ending with a blank page that gets counted... so actually when you take out the 7+ blank pages, and five page introduction, it's only something like 100 pages. That's fine, if that is 100 interest-packed pages, but it is not. He has this concept of "otherwise" that he seems quite proud of, and continually attempts to force fit the stories of Elijah and Elisha into -- whether they fit or not. 40 pages are devoted to this explaining and contrasting the "Otherwise" concept with the "Or" concept.
He takes us on quite the indulgent journey as he "makes his case." He writes about everything from the Vietnam conflict to the Scientific Revolution. He quotes scientists and hymnists -- but, the bible? Not so much. He finally ends with a list of people who meet his criteria of "otherwise." It's a list that includes Nelson Mandela, Sister Theresa, and Malcom X.
So now we're down to 60 pages or so that actually cover the subject of the characters the book is supposedly about. On Page 45, we finally get to what the Bible says about Elijah. Remarkable for a book that was supposedly about the man.
I was hoping for something less of a scholarly flight of fancy, and more of an insightful teaching on the deep meaning of these two important men. Instead, Dr. Brueggemann spends most of his time talking about how they were merely legends of the Bible, that presented a conflict for him, until he saw them as "Otherwise."
If you enjoy listening to a Professor lecturing on and on about his latest intellectual fancy, with the Bible as a mere backdrop, you may enjoy this book.
Otherwise, I would skip it, if were I you...
- Reviewed in the United States on May 3, 2016So good! Such great revelation and I've used what I've learned several times over. I just love the lives of Elijah and Elisha and I was worried this would be too much. It is scholarly but it is just so good I had a hard time putting it down. Thanks Dr. Brueggemann for excellence in writing!

- Reviewed in the United States on October 21, 2005As always Walter Brueggemann shows himself to be the most inspiring Old Testament Scholar in the world. This book covers the stories of Elijah and the Widow woman, Elisha and the Shunamite, Elisha and Naaman the Lepor, Elisha and the siege of Samaria and much, much more. If you have read Brueggemann before then you already know that he brings remarkable insight to the interpretation of the text and he does not fail to do so in this book. You will have many occasions during the book in which you say, "Now why didn't I see that before." He is a dynamic writer that keeps you wanting more and the good thing is he seems to love to write, because he has so many books and articles out there and thankfully, I own most of them.
