The Contest: The 1968 Election and the War for America's Soul Hardcover – July 3, 2018

4.2 out of 5 stars 13 ratings

A dramatic, deeply informed account of one of the most consequential elections and periods in American history

1968—rife with riots, assassinations, anti–Vietnam War protests, and realpolitik—was one of the most tumultuous years in the twentieth century, culminating in one of the most consequential presidential elections in American history.
The Contest tells the story of that contentious election and that remarkable year. Bringing a fresh perspective to events that still resonate half a century later, this book is especially timely, giving us the long view of a turning point in American culture and politics.

Author Michael Schumacher sets the stage with a deep look at the people with important roles in the unfolding drama: Lyndon B. Johnson, Robert F. Kennedy, Eugene McCarthy, George Wallace, Richard Nixon, and especially Hubert H. Humphrey, whose papers and journals afford surprising new insights. Following these politicians in the lead-up to the primaries, through the chaotic conventions, and down the home stretch to the general election, The Contest combines biographical and historical details to create a narrative as intimate in human detail as it is momentous in scope and significance.

An election year when the competing forces of law and order and social justice were on the ballot, the Vietnam War divided the country, and the liberal regime begun with Franklin D. Roosevelt was on the defensive, 1968 marked a profound shift in the nation’s culture and sense of itself. Thorough in its research and spellbinding in the telling, Schumacher’s book brings sharp focus to that year and its lessons for our current critical moment in American politics.

Book has a way of placing reader right in the year and the most interesting election of all times!

This is one of a number of books on the 1968 Presidential campaign and election. At more than 460 pages, it is one of the most thorough of the bunch. It is well-researched and engaging.

The year 1968 was one of the most tumultuous in American history. It was marked by Democratic peace candidate challenging President Lyndon Johnson, the Tet Offensive, LBJ's unexpected withdrawal from the 1968 election, the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, the violent Democratic Convention in Chicago, the third-party candidacy of George Wallace, Richard Nixon's scuttling of peace talks between North and South Vietnam and an election that was surprising close. Nixon won the popular election by less than 1%. Although he held a comfortable edge in The Electoral College, a small shift in votes in several states could have sent the election to the House of Representatives, where the Democrats were in the majority.

Author Michael Schumacher provides background on each of the candidates, issues and challenges. He covers the primaries and conventions in depth. He pays particular attention to those who opposed the war, such as the Students for a Democratic Society, the National Mobilization Committee to End the War in Vietnam and the Youth International Party.

Schumacher concludes that "the election of 1968 represented a marker, a turning point in American election history It is a story of faith--and the loss of it. It is a story of change."
It is an election that changed American history.

A look back at the election of 1968 and how LBJ came to the decision not to run for reelection. With the war going on and riots throughout the country, one would think that he would have still chosen to run, but instead did not. This opened the door for the Republican Party and made infighting worse for the Democrats. A good book.

This book is truly an outstanding work. It brings all of the events of the critical election year of 1968 alive. it is well documented and referenced, so much so, that this book can be a reference for all who want to know more of that year. The downfall of LBJ, who had the potential to be a great President and was haunted by the ghost of JFK and the Vietnam War which ultimately, he could not deal with. The enigmatic Eugene McCarthy, the assassinated Robert Kennedy, the misunderstood Hubert Humphrey are all vividly portrayed, as is the rioting at the Democratic Convention in Chicago. Ultimately, the race came down to Humphrey , Richard Nixon and George Wallace. Had election day been a week later, who knows what the result might have been. This book tells it all.
Regrettably, there are some minor errors. Nelson Rockefeller was never a cabinet member, George Ball is incorrectly identified on several occasions, RFK's military record is wrongly stated and Adlai Stevenson was never a U.S. Senator.
I highly recommend this book to all interested in that important election.
