Sick Enough: A Guide to the Medical Complications of Eating Disorders 1st Edition
Purchase options and add-ons
Patients with eating disorders frequently feel that they aren’t "sick enough" to merit treatment, despite medical problems that are both measurable and unmeasurable. They may struggle to accept rest, nutrition, and a team to help them move towards recovery. Sick Enough offers patients, their families, and clinicians a comprehensive, accessible review of the medical issues that arise from eating disorders by bringing relatable case presentations and a scientifically sound, engaging style to the topic. Using metaphor and patient-centered language, Dr. Gaudiani aims to improve medical diagnosis and treatment, motivate recovery, and validate the lived experiences of individuals of all body shapes and sizes, while firmly rejecting dieting culture.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2025This is the best book I've read on eating disorders. Dr. Gaudiani is incredibly experienced, smart, and most importantly, compassionate. This book should be read by every medical professional, therapist, and anyone who works with or could encounter a human with an eating disorder. It's so well written, scientific, and interesting. It will also benefit any suffering person with anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder and their family. Beautiful book! So glad it exists as a wonderful resource for the world.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 3, 2024My ED nutritionist recommended this book to me, and I was a little hesitant to read it because I thought that, as a medical professional myself, it might make me see the issues more academically and applicable to my patients but not myself. Thankfully that was not the case. The author’s explanation about atypical anorexia and all the medical complications that can occur even if your weight is “normal” (which often means uneducated medical professionals dismissing your concerns) was the motivation I needed to begin my recovery journey. And she was exactly right - even at a “normal” weight and with significant weight-bearing exercise, I have osteopenia in my 30s. Recovery is a slow, non-linear process, but I’m forever grateful to this book/author!
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2024When I read this book, I was at the lower end of a "healthy" weight on the BMI chart, but I couldn't get warm. When my body temperature wouldn't get above 97.2 degrees, this book taught me what was going on with my body, and it made me realize how dire the situation was and how my organs were struggling to stay alive. I could have died. I didn't read this whole book, but I read enough to scare me into finally overcoming it. 8 months later I'm a healthy size, I eat real meals and good nutrient dense foods, and my relationship with food is healthy for the first time in my life. All my hair grew back too! I'm thankful for this book. It definitely saved my life.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2019This book fundamentally transforms the experience of recovering from an eating disorder. It's the first book to address both the physical and inner experience of recovery with equal precision and respect. Dr. G's medical explanations bring clarity and validation, removing fear and building trust in the body's wisdom. But more importantly, her work opens up space for new kinds of questions about selfhood and agency in recovery. Where is the line between illness and identity, biology and self? How can an illness that begins in our chromosomes lead to lessons at the level of soul? Dr. G makes it possible to approach these questions with openness and curiosity, not stigma and blame. She creates a space into which new narratives can enter-- narratives that center the patient experience, the way biology manifests in diverse human beings with values and experiences beyond a diagnosis. Thanks to Dr. G, those of us recovering today have access to a new vocabulary to conceive of our illness and new maps to full recovery. It's a language of rigor, wholeness, integration, and dignity that changes the tone of conversation and empowers healing.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 9, 2024I have recently started treatment to deal with a 35 plus year eating disorder. I stumbled upon this book while looking for reading material on the topic. All I can say is wow! The author and this book did an outstanding job of outlining the physical and mental tolls eating disorders of any form can take on the body and all of its organs and their functions. (chapters are dedicated to a variety of ED's). It doesn't as much get into the treatment but does talk about how eating disorders can develop and continue to thrive in many scenarios. Reading this made me realize how much damage I have done and how I have also explained away a number of health issues which are clearly the result of my eating behaviors. It has been a real wake up call to continue to pursue and look for treatments which I know will be hard given how long this has gone on.
What I would highly recommend for parents of children of any age is even reading the last chapter on how to create a positive environment at home. My kids are already out of the house but I think this chapter offers great insights on how we can portray positive messages to our children and hopefully not pass along eating disorders to them.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2024My dietitian gave me her copy of this to read when I was super stuck in the "not sick enough" mindset. I think it helps that I really like this kind of science/a&p kind of stuff and even knowing and understanding what was happening to my body prior to reading this, nothing was helping break down that mindset. But the way this book is written is what finally helped get through to me.
(Knowing the content could/would be tough going into it and having the proper supports in place was also super important, of course)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2024The information within the book is helpful for any medical professional, ED-specialized or otherwise. It is a good mixture of clear medical knowledge while also being easy to read. Highly recommend for any medical professional that works with ED patients, including primary care.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 1, 2020Well written. Not quite what I had expected and can be really “triggering “ in the patient’s hands.

5.0 out of 5 stars Made a significant difference in my understanding of my eating disorder and my recovery
If you have an eating disorder or have a family member who does, this book may be an excellent tool. I am anorexic and in treatment. My dietician suggested I read this book to help me connect with the reality that I actually an "Sick enough" to need treatment. It is a common battle people with eating disorders face. Where this book may be hard to read, it hit home. The way the information is laid out made it easy to identify with. Each medical issue was also presented with a case study. They gave a back story to each patient and a follow up as to the progress they made. I highly recommend it, however if you are receiving treatment, perhaps seek council from your therapist or dietician as it can be triggering and having access to a professional to talk through those triggers may be helpful.
