About the Author

Jeffrey L. Marion, PhD, was a founding member of the Leave No Trace board of directors and spent a decade as chairman of the Educational Review Committee, helping to develop LNT's principles, outdoor practices, courses, and educational materials. He is currently employed by the U.S. Geological Survey and stationed at Virginia Tech University, where he is also an adjunct professor in the College of Natural Resources and Environment. He lives in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Jeff Marion conducts research on visitor impacts and sustainable recreation management for the National Park Service and other protected natural areas (https://www.usgs.gov/staff-profiles/jeff-marion). An avid outdoor recreationist who enjoys backpacking, climbing, caving, and canoeing, he has served as a Scoutmaster and co-ed Venture Crew Leader for more than 22 years. He has authored more than 170 scientific publications and routinely consults with park and recreation managers to improve the sustainability of recreation visitation to avoid or minimize resource and social impacts. A founding member of the national Leave No Trace program’s board of directors, he chaired its Educational Review Committee for a decade, helping to develop and refine a diverse array of low impact principles and practices.

    Even as a NOLS student I still find it hard explaining Leave No Trace ethics to my camping friends because it comes off as me telling them what to do and it's just not a big deal to them. They'd rather take way too much food, tons of toilet paper and wipes, and items that produce way more trash than necessary. This book helped me pass on the knowledge to a couple of friends as a gift. I have hopes it will make a difference in their future trips and allow them to be a bit more aware of the choices they make.

    This is the most up-to-date book available on Leave No Trace practices for frontcountry and backcountry environments, and a must have for any outdoor enthusiasts, land manager or outdoor educator. This very readable book is perfect for those who are just learning about Leave No Trace but is just a important for the Leave No Trace experts as the new tips, research results and techniques found in this book are invaluable. From an afternoon picnic in a local park go by to a month-long wilderness expedition, if you want to enjoy the outdoors responsibly, this is the book for you.

    This is a phenomenal book, and it is the most current and comprehensive Leave No Trace material available. The book is great for people who are new to the outdoors and new to LNT and looking for information on how to have the littlest impact on the outdoors. The book is also great for more experienced folks looking to practice some serious LNT. Finally, the book is perfect for everyone involved in LNT (practicers, Trainers, Master Educators, etc.) or anyone interested in outdoor stewardship and sane environmental practices. A must-have for outdoor enthusiasts!

    Though I've yet to read the book "cover to cover", I've read several chapters and it's really enjoyable. The information is simple where it needs to be simple, and in depth where more explanation is needed. Plus, all the color photos really help drive home the concepts. I think this is my new go-to book for Leave No Trace minimum impact practices.
