In author/illustrator Steven Guarnaccia’s quirky, artsy picture book retelling of The Three Little Pigs, the pigs and their homes are nods to three famous architects—Frank Gehry, Philip Johnson, and Frank Lloyd Wright—and their signature homes.

Each house is filled with clever details, including furnishings by the architects and their contemporaries. Of course, not all the houses are going to protect the pigs from the wolf’s huffing and puffing. Which one will? The wolf, and readers, are in for a clever surprise ending.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

As in Goldilocks and the Three Bears: A Tale Moderne (2000), Guarnaccia combines a delightfully fractured fairy tale with an ultrastylish, kid-friendly primer of twentieth-century design. Here, each of the three little pigs is a porcine doppelgänger for a world-famous architect: Frank Gehry (who lives in a house of scraps), Philip Johnson (whose house is glass), and Frank Lloyd Wright, whose sturdy, brick Fallingwater becomes the pigs' refuge from the wolf. The story works without the sophisticated references, but the endpapers, printed with design icons featured on the pages, provide a fun, interactive game and will pique kids' interest in the subject. Grades K-3. --Gillian Engberg

If you like the classic folktale story of the Three Little Pigs, you are going to love this Architectural twist by Steven Guarnaccia. It is a great way to introduce students to different architectural styles, as well as to four real life architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright. Not only are their most classic homes featured, but some of their original furnishings as well. I used the book to introduce an architectural unit to my students, and then I had them research the real homes and the architects that designed them. It's a great way to blend literature, mathematics and art too, since then I had them design their own blueprints to scale. They loved it!

I enjoyed this different version of the story. I enjoyed seeing the different types of houses and what they were made of. The fact that they represented real houses made it more interesting. The pigs looked like real architects. Inside the cover were representative pieces of architecture with credit given to the architect.
As an adult, I appreciated the information and enjoyed the humor of the story with the pigs representing real architects. I think this book would be interesting to children and adults.

So, you know the plot. Most adults could recite the entire story to their children - or grandchildren - blindfolded.

The manner in which the story is told is all the delight.

This version is a visual delight. Simply delicious, imaginative illustrations. We bought two copies. One for ourselves, and and one for an adult-aged friend who puts together his own pop up books and has designed many a building over the years.

This book will put a smile in your day. No rare thing.

This is a great addition to my Three Little Pigs Unit. My first graders were amazed that the house in the story was real. We had a great discussion about architure and design. They became very creative when designing their wolf safe houses.

A great interpretation of the Three little pigs. I teach preschool and I used this book for our theme on Architects and the kids loved comparing the original tale with this one.

actually introduced to it via our local library. My youngest kept wanting to borrow it - we had it out for 4 months before the library said no more! So we bought it.

commend Amazon for carrying it - none of our local booksellers could get it (we are in Australia!)

the detail and thought put into retelling the story with an architectural angle was first class. A friend of mine who is an architect was jealous.

    Kudos to the author.

This is a great book for introducing STEAM challenges. The 3 pigs are based on three famous architects and my students loved seeing the buildings the real architects designed in real life before reading the story.

I saw this book in an architecture magazine when it was only availiable from overseas. I PATIENTLY waited for it to come on Amazon so that I could purchase it in time for my daughter's birthday. I read the book several times now to her and she loves it, as do I. I do like how the author favored Frank Lloyd Wright as I am a fan of his work. I recommend this book to anyone in the architecture industry with children.

Definitely an American version but keeps to the traditional plot and language e.g. not by the hair on my chinny chin chin. Excellent illustrations and interesting use of architecture and design classics which children can spot throughout the book and spark their interest in this area.
