The Substance of Faith, and Other Cotton Patch Sermons (A Koinonia Publication) Hardcover – January 1, 1972

4.5 out of 5 stars 23 ratings

Those who have heard Clarence Jordan speak will once again be moved by the power and conviction of his words when they read this volume. Those who never heard him will welcome this chance to meet him. Here is Clarence Jordan at his best: the biting irony that pierced sham and pretense, the flashing wit that could illuminate as it delighted, the blazing concern that knew how to lay its burden on the heart of even the casual listener, the depth of spirit that saw fresh meaning in the most familiar passage of Scripture.

Jordan, though some may not agree, probably was somewhat ahead of his time with many of the things he attempted to do in Georgia in his day. I have been interested in knowing more about him and his background since reading his translations of some of the gospels which he translated from Greek into English. I consider him to be a genuine Greek scholar who understood what Jesus taught and who attempted to put these teachings into language that people of the South would understand. I think that this book provides a good summary of his life.

A book that takes you back to the Holy Spirit filled days of the 60's and 70's. ,Clarence was a man who knew the horrors of southern discrimination - but had the faith to carry him through.

I first read these sermons in 1975 after meeting Clarence's widow at Southern Seminary in Louisville, KY. After I heard her speak I wanted to know more about Clarence and Koinonia. The humor, insight into southern culture and wisdom of these sermons continue to impact my faith after all of these years. I eventually made a pilgramage to Koinonia to see the place about which Clarence spoke. If you have an interest in how the truths of the Bible can be applied to modern life or to your life I can only encourage you to read these sermons. I have read them many times over the years and I always feel called to a more authentic faith and to the teachings of Jesus. Don B

I love this book. I live and grew up within 75 miles of this place and did not know about it until a couple of weeks ago. Very interesting book and story.

I love the way Clarence Jordan tells the stories of the Bible in ways his congregation can relate. The books are out of print but not out of interest
