Regeneration Through Violence Paperback – April 15, 2000
Purchase options and add-ons
In Regeneration Through Violence, the first of his trilogy on the mythology of the American West, Richard Slotkin shows how the attitudes and traditions that shape American culture evolved from the social and psychological anxieties of European settlers struggling in a strange new world to claim the land and displace the Native Americans. Using the popular literature of the seventeenth, eighteenth, and early nineteenth centuries-including captivity narratives, the Daniel Boone tales, and the writings of Hawthorne, Thoreau, and Melville-Slotkin traces the full development of this myth.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2013This is a scholarly book giving a new facet with which to view the development of the "American" persona/myth.
In it the wilderness acts as a being, dark, dangerous, free...as an external reality and a developer of inward convictions.
Very enjoyable.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 30, 2013While searching for resources to help me understand the roots of the high violence level, relevant to other developed countries, I came upon Slotkin's three volumes that provide significant insight into how we arrived where we are.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2017I bought this book on the recommendation of a friend to understand why there is so much gun violence in the U.S. It is extremely well researched and informative. The author has answered my question about about violence in America from a cultural perspective. That said, it is a very tedious read. It's written by an academic and reads like a 500+ page textbook.
