Everyman's Talmud: The Major Teachings of the Rabbinic Sages Paperback – February 7, 1995
Purchase options and add-ons
"To some readers of this book, the Talmud represents little more than a famous Jewish book. But people want to know about a book that, they are told, defines Judaism. Everyman's Talmud is the right place to begin not only to learn about Judaism in general but to meet the substance of the Talmud in particular . . . In time to come, Cohen's book will find its companion-though I do not anticipate it will ever require a successor for what it accomplishes with elegance and intelligence: a systematic theology of the Talmud's Judaism."
—From the Foreword by Jacob Neusner
This classic introduction reveals the wisdom of the rabbinic sages on such topics as the doctrine of God; God and the universe; the soul and its destiny; prophesy and revelation; physical life; moral life and social living; law, ethics, and jurisprudence; legends and folk traditions; the Messiah and the world to come.

- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2020I've been finding that this is helpful in studying the Torah. It gives lots of things to think about as it is a oral tradition. It's more or less having Rabbi's right along side of you with discussing the traditions and giving you a good amount of knowledge of most every question you might have about living your life according to Torah.
With Torah 'meaning instructions ' one is always going to have questions as to what something means. With the Talmud being a discussion helping to understand the questions you have.
This particular Talmud I find alot to look forward to because it is easy to find what your looking for and then upon reading I find it gives me much understanding of what I need and am looking for.
For such a small book its absolutely packed with information that you would be looking for that applies to the life here and now. I wish I had got this a long time ago.
The only thing I wish is that it was the whole set of the Talmud because it would be so interesting, complete and I would love to read through them.
But if your looking for a version of it that could be used everyday in the gere and now I would highly recommend this. You will not be disappointed.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2024An excellent introduction on the subject.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 19, 2013I am not yet very deep into the book, but I have loved it so far. Cohen's selection of words and idioms is impeccable. The introduction is very vivid and helpful, even if you have no previous knowledge on the topic. Some basic Tanakh cognizance helps a lot, but if you're looking for books like this one then I'm sure you won't have an issue.
If I could complain about something, it'd be the dates provided for births, deaths, and other events (especially in the Introduction); not because they're wrong (how can I know), but because they seem to differ (greatly) from every other source I check. Dates aside, the content is invaluable.
This is not meant for serious Talmud study, as other have said, but I don't think that was the author's purpose when publishing. It is a thorough overview of the major teachings conveniently divided by topics, which is great to get acquainted with what the Talmud says and with the ideology of most of the Jewish population. If you're just beginning to study Talmud, I reccommend getting this book, reading it, and then moving on to a more focused one. Great purchase, no regrets.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2013If you want a lucid, thoughtful, and well-organized approach to the Talmud, this is the book for you. It is considered a classic and, after reading it, I have to agree that it ranks as a classic for good reason.
Whether you are Jewish and need some help approaching the rather daunting subject of the Talmud as a whole - or you are a Christian like me, who yearns to know more about the teachings and traditions of Judaism, but need a helping hand to introduce you to a subject that at first seems strange - Abraham Cohen's "Everyman's Talmud" is THE place to start.
This book is an incredible resource, providing clear and organized information on and excerpts from the Talmud, but not only that - it is a testament to the wealth of moral teachings that define the Judaic Religion, and its timeless wisdom and goodness will resonate with many people of all religions and backgrounds.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Brilliant and Condensed Portrait of Thinking Inherent in the Talmud
An extraordinary piece of scholarship, summarising into a systematic form, the basic theological/spiritual/cultural paradigms which both fed and are inherent in the Talmud. This work is helpful in redirecting the reader to the extraordinarily monolithic nature of Judaism across both time and geography, in contradistinction to much scholarship which seeks to – and often helpfully – shed light on the differences between various Jewish sects and periods. Abraham Cohen helps one to remember that Judaism is and has been both consistent in respect to key ideas about God and Israel, whilst producing breadth in the detail. Cohen reminds us that if you want the same hundred answers to one question, then ask a hundred rabbis how many gods there are.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the original books.
A must read for everyone, irrespective of what religion you follow. It’s a pity I read it so late in life, yet glad I did.

5.0 out of 5 stars De Talmoed uitgelegd voor geïnteresseerde leken.
Mooi overzicht van de hoofdlijnen van de talmoedische leer. Vaak hoor je over de Talmoed allen anekdotes, hier gaat het om de inhoud. Nuttig, overzichtelijk.
