Review
Christianity Today
"From one of the best-known evangelical biblical scholars comes yet another excellent volume for our learning. . . This is a book that will be read with profit by all who have an interest in the primitive church—from the armchair student of the Bible to the most advanced biblical scholar. This will certainly remain a standard text for years to come."
Restoration Quarterly
"This work shows depth of study, a familiarity with the important bibliographical material and a fairness in approach, and it provides a wealth of materials not only on Paul and his letters but also on the world of the apostle. . . A valuable addition to any Bible student's library."
Restoration Review
"You are not likely to find anything better on the life and letters of the great apostle. Extravagantly informative. A veritable gold mine of information on Paul, the New Testament, and the early church."
The Christian Century
"F. F. Bruce offers in this illustrated book an exposition of all the primary themes in Paul's thought as these developed in the historical context of his life and travels. A remarkably even and coherent work, Bruce's portrait of Paul is convincing from every vantage point—historical, theological, psychological, personal. . . A balanced and attractive book."
Theology Today
"This study can without doubt be labelled F. F. Bruce's magnum opus. . . It is so rich in acute observation and historical detail that few readers will fail to profit from it."

- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2014Bruce's book provides fantastic coverage of the Apostle's Paul's life and thought. He discusses Paul's Jewish background in Tarsus, his zealous Pharasaism, his conversion from unbelief to Christ, and his missionary journeys and theology. Bruce is a reliable guide as he takes you through the narratives in Acts and the supplementary material in the epistles. He is open to all of the Pauline corpus being authentic writings of Paul, and even if someone else had a hand with Ephesians, (Bruce is not convinced), then that someone else did a great job representing Pauline thought.
I especially enjoyed the discussions of the Corinthian correspondence (Paul's teaching about marriage in 1 Corinthians 7 in particular, I found it to be very pastoral and sensible) and the proposition that the Onesimus in Philemon went on to become bishop of Ephesus years later.
Bruce believes that the heart of Pauline teaching is that true religion is not a matter of rules and regulations, that Christ makes us all one in Him, that people matter more than things, principles, and causes (not sure about this one, I would want to qualify it), and that unfair discrimination against others is an offense to God. I think the first two points are the strongest.
One of the most INTERESTING books on Paul I have ever read. Bruce is like an investigative reporter, digging into the New Testament documents and historical sources to present the clearest picture of Paul. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 23, 2024Ever wonder what Paul was really like and what he had to go through? This is a wonderful book that fills in almost all of my blank spaces. Very personal and heart wrenching. Very highly recommended!

- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2024I have read many commentaries, but this one reads differently because Bruce is trained as an academician and not as a theologian. Love the way he integrates all the aspects of the life of Paul - journeys, letters, etc. along with history, geography, and culture in one chronological treatment.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2010I chose the book on Paul due to a deep fascination on his life and who he was. Once I began reading it, I did find that there were chapters in the book that were especially insightful, but the depth to which the author chose to go was at times like reading Tom Clancy in non-fiction. There were pages and pages of discussion on theories about seemingly trivial issues about Paul that I wondered why the author chose to explore them. At times, it was difficult to read. Overall, though, I am quite happy that I read the book and feel I have a much richer perspective on the New Testament and, more importantly to me, more familiarity with the Apostle Paul.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 19, 2022The book came quickly and was in excellent condition. FF Bruce's Paul is a classic. I have more "modern" books on Paul, but for a good overall for history of the period, Paul's own life and his travels, start by reading this book. I learned many little points that I should have been introduced to in the more modern books, but was not. Start with this book on Paul and then read the others.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 12, 2013Inspiring, thoughtful and scholarly. F.F. Bruce leads the reader down paths the Apostle trod. His magnificent historical perspective is most arguably thorough yet readable, insightful and engaging. Ample documentation is provided in original language footnotes of the Greek and Semitic sources from which we read our modern Bibles as emphasis and for further clarification. Print type clear !6 B/W plate illustrations. I am enjoying F.F. Bruce's plain non complicated expressions helping to augment a deeper understanding & bio of the Apostle Paul. Very well written , well worth the purchase.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2013I have not finished it but F.F. Bruce brings to bear his considerable knowledge and intelligence about the Holy Scriptures and sets
forth the Apostle in sharp relief. I am seeing into Paul's heart with greater clarity as the pages zip by.
Of all the people that ever lived, Jesus impacted Paul (Saul) more than any other, and for me to begin to see the dynamic of that impact is stunning and wonderful.
I thank God for Jesus way beyond all others of course. And I thank Him for Paul beyond all the rest. And F.F. Bruce shares his God given faith so infectiously that I want to make sure I thank God for his gifts as well. Jesus really meant it when He talked about 'gifts in men.'
Jesus set Paul's heart free and Paul, as Bruce shows, is helping us set our hearts free.
Jesus reigns-God is Good!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read!!!
I will never have respect for the "Institutional Religious Hireachy of evangelicalism" or for that which all Proteztantism is derrived from.
The respect I jave for F.F. Bruce, is in humble accord and cherish of unity in truth and light.
The journey that Saul of Tarsin set out upon when leaving Jerusalem headed for a path of destruction due to his misconceived zeal, is an extremely intricate step by step adventure.
F.F. Bruce presents as accurate a display as is possible, and presents Paul in a light that does not establish misconceptions built up by loosey goosey Pulpiteers. Paul produced an effort of exa.e that no one since the first century has every remotely come near to. Without Pauls dedicated passion of humility amd grace, the world would limely never have had a New Testament to become extant.
Whatever the wolves at Pulpits have to say about anything at all, is pretty much irrelevant compared to what Paul gave to his cherished. This documentative work, by F.F. Bruce presents some very insightful facts of history, that I now question whether all pastors would rather gloss over for avoiding the immense facts that SHOULD threaten their livelihoods.
The history of Paul, and the establishment of Christ's body of first century believers, is an important essential required to fully understand and experience the freedoms in Christ. I am grateful to have been set free from the concetrations camps of Pews and Pulpits.
