Sacred Number: The Secret Quality of Quantities (Wooden Books) Hardcover – July 1, 2005
Purchase options and add-ons
Numbers permeate every aspect of our lives; very little happens without a basic ability to manipulate the simple whole numbers we all take for granted. Beautifully illustrated with old engravings as well as contemporary imagery, Sacred Number introduces basic counting systems; significant numbers from major religious texts; the importance of astronomy, geometry, and music to number quality; how numbers affect architecture. Lundy explains why the ideas of Pythagoras still resonate, and she profiles each number from one to ten to show its distinct qualities: why, for example, the golden section is associated with five, and seven with the Virgin Mary.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 5, 2009As a mathematician I have to say I loved this book, as well as the entire wooden books series. The book is 50% image and 50% language, the perfect combination to keep both mind and eye engaged. The wooden book claim of, "little books, big ideas" couldn't be more true than this book. I have read it many times. I intend to read it many more times and will probably buy several copies for my friends.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 24, 2009This little book taught me even more about the sacred qualities of numbers than I ever would have imagined! I've studied various numerological systems such as The Enneagram (Helen Palmer is best) and numerology along with crystal studies. I was shocked to see the Enneagram structure in it! This book has a bunch to offer who look for quality over just quantity. We've become too numbed to our mathematics and quantifications. Time to see through a different lens. Highly recommended!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2025A quick and engaging read that draws you into the fascinating world of numbers. The author skillfully connects numerical concepts to nature and cultural symbolism, giving them tangible and relatable meanings. The vivid metaphors she employs linger in the reader's mind, making abstract ideas memorable. This book is a heartfelt tribute to the beauty of numbers and a commendable effort to ignite a passion for them.
My favourite lines from the book are:
"It is perhaps appropriate that our zero takes the form of a circle, itself a symbol of one, and that our one takes the form of a short line between two points. As acknowledged in gematria, each number already contains the seed of its successor within it, and the symbols for zero and one strangely combine to create the golden symbol , a fitting thought with which to end this book."
"When the ancient Greeks proved that the diagonals of squares could not be expressed as fractions, it is said to have caused a crisis in their ranks, a little like the terror still experienced today by many people faced with a square root symbol."

- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2021Well made and sturdy construction
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2013A very good book concerning how our numbering system came to be that which we know today. It explains how certain numbers can be grouped together and explains what other things in life share that number.

For a small book it is packed full of interesting information. It wastes no words as filler and gives you the straight goods on sacred numbers.
