Editorial Reviews
From the Back Cover
"A timely and important reminder that doctrines are not merely ideas to be debated but truths to be done. Jones's evangelical and ecumenical approach to each doctrine is also most welcome: she does a good job balancing the centripetal force of evangelicals' focus on the gospel with the centrifugal force of the gospel's historical reception in many places and times. Practicing Christian Doctrine joins the short list of one-volume introductions to Christian theology that I am happy to recommend."
--Kevin J. Vanhoozer, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School
"A wise, well-written introduction to the wonder and joy of Christian doctrine and to the importance of actually practicing what Christians affirm to be true. I can't think of a better text for introducing Christians to the riches of our theological heritage and to the call to live out that legacy well in the world today."
--Christopher A. Hall, president of Renovaré
"An introductory theology for evangelical Christians that affirms what is praiseworthy about this distinctive movement within Christianity, while at the same time drawing on the rich tradition offered by other voices and movements in the global church to enrich and nurture their understanding of the gospel. Written in an accessible and winsome style, this book will be a valuable teaching tool for years to come."
--Barry Harvey, Honors College and the Graduate Faculty in Religion, Baylor University
"Jones goes beyond the 'what' of theology to draw the reader into the 'So what?' with lively reminders of the joy and gratitude that should permeate theological exploration. Perhaps the most helpful feature of this book, though, is that it never loses sight of the 'Now what?' question, as Jones embeds evocative indicators of how Christian thought is to be embodied and lived."
--Steven Wilkens, Azusa Pacific University
"Jones presents a rich and engaging survey of Christian doctrine, showing how good theology is to be not merely believed but also lived. As she demonstrates in each chapter concerning every major doctrine of the faith, orthodox theology should nourish spiritual growth and inspire faithful Christian living. I highly recommend this book, whether as a classroom text or for personal use."
--James S. Spiegel, Taylor University

- Reviewed in the United States on March 10, 2021Love how she writes about important foundational theological doctrines with both depth and breadth. It is a very practical, Christ-centered, and easy read. I highly recommend for anyone who loves Jesus and wants to deepen their faith and walk with Christ! A great book for individual study, small groups, and theology/Bible college students alike :)
- Reviewed in the United States on September 28, 2021The author does an excellent job of making deep theological thinking accessible and understandable to ordinary folks like me. Additionally, the inclusion of many diverse members of the faith was such a blessing! Reading it opened new vistas of orthodox thinking and, yes, it is a good encourager of appropriate application to living everyday life in a God-honoring way.

- Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2018This is certainly my favorite textbook for an intro to Theology that I've read. In particular, it doesn't concern itself with tight systematics from one perspective, but generously presents views across the spectrum of Christian theology: Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox; Calvinist and Arminian, etc. Additionally this book draws on theological voices of men and women around the world, giving it a sweet diversity.
While I appreciate the breadth of perspectives and Jones' ability to focus on core Christian essentials, I found the book lacking a bit in its helpfulness of content. In particular, while I appreciated the depth of looking into early church councils on matters of Christology and Trinity, I felt the book overall was still too concerned with ancient Greek questions about God and took relatively little time addressing contemporary questions that require our best theological thinking today.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2021This is a lovely introduction to theology. The author writes with passion and conviction. She does a lovely job of explaining theological terms, appropriately using biblical supports, and represents different theological view points with grace. It's extremely accessible and a great introduction for anybody, regardless of where they are in their faith journey.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2021I enjoyed the use of Scripture as the basis of the discussion with outside teachers brought in to show how we may or may not have fully gathered what the scriptures were saying or might be saying today.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 14, 2017I've just began seminary and this book was one of my primary readings for my first class. This book gave an excellent overview of the various doctrines such as Creation, the Trinity, the Holy Spirit, and much more. I'd highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get the main gist of theological doctrine. The bibliography in the back can also point to plenty other insightful sources, too!
