A League of Their Own

Daring female athletes win over a skeptical public and lead their team to victory in the WWII-era women's baseball league.
Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Madonna star in this major-league comedy from the team that brought you Big. Hanks stars as Jimmy Dugan, a washed-up ballplayer whose big league days are over. Hired to coach in the All-American Girls Baseball League of 1943, while the male pros are at war, Dugan finds himself drawn back into the game by the heart and heroics of his all-girl team. Jon Lovitz adds a scene-stealing cameo as the sarcastic scout who recruits Dottie Hinson (Geena Davis), the baseball dolly with a Babe Ruth swing. Teammates Madonna, Lori Petty and Rosie O'Donnell round out the roster, taking the team to the World Series. Based on the true story of the pioneering women who blazed the trail, on the fields and off, for generations of athletes.

Penny Marshall's popular 1992 comedy sheds light on a little-known chapter of American sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men's baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall's movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregonian sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They're all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall (with a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) does a fine job of establishing a colorful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O'Donnell. It's a conventional Hollywood sports story (Marshall's never been one to take dramatic risks), but the stellar cast is delightful, and the movie's filled with memorable moments, witty dialogue, and agreeable sentiment. And just remember: there's no crying in baseball! --Jeff Shannon

- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2024Seriously, what's not to love? Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty, and best of all, directed by 'Laverne' herself- Penny Marshall. What an awesome movie. I will not get into the nitty-gritty of it, but if you love baseball, good acting, and great directing, this movie is for you. This is a feel-good movie and can be played anytime. This means that you shouldn't worry about offending your guests or anything like that.
Trust me, I had a gathering and I had 'Something About Mary' playing in the background, and guess what, some people got offended. Not my friends, but the plus 1 or 2 that they brought.
So, back to this, get it in 4K. The picture is vivid and so awesome to watch. The sound is super clear and crisp and you will love watching this in this format.
On the fence? Because you have a copy in DVD and Blu-ray already? I do too. Just get it in 4K. Worth it.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 24, 2024The 4K video compared to the original Blu-Ray was quite an upgrade. I did not view the included Blu ray 1080p disc.
The film now has a mature and very stable picture with beautiful color. I can tell the disc has a very healthy bit rate. The transfer has unobtrusive fine grain throughout without clumping. The one exception was unfortunately the opening scene in a dark interior. I was just about to be super disappointed because of that first scene, but it never disappointed after the first 5 minutes. If you have ever seen the 4K presentation of "Terms of Endearment", it is very similar - and probably has the similar film stock. The image doesn't sparkle like a newer film, but has a nostalgic look - appropriate for such a period piece.
The Atmos soundtrack was super clear with dialogue coming through loud and clear. I don't have the spatial channels, but as per usual, the 7.1 fold down displays an improved audio experience. Since there are no action movie opportunities for a flashy sound design, you'll have to be happy in hearing spaciousness in the music soundtrack and the occasional motorized vehicles or crowd cheers.
I highly recommend this purchase. You won't be disappointed!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2025Finally, after a second try from a previous seller, this DVD set was not missing disk one which contains subtitle options and the commentary. There is a second disk with just special features but it was the movie with the audio commentary I wanted which is not available on other versions of this classic movie. Perfect for a Tom Hanks movie marathon, the other talented actors help bring to life a story that I never tire of re-watching.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 27, 2024A beautifully crafted film, this one is all about the character development, and believe me, this film is chock full of characters, and stars. It's definitely a comedy, but with a nostalgic edge that always leaves me a bit happy/sad at the end. I've seen the film many times and will look forward to my next viewing, knowing that I'm in for a completely involving two hours.
This is NOT an action or adventure film, this is a touching look back at a forgotten period of time that deserves the attention this film brings. A good Saturday afternoon film with a bowl of popcorn and maybe a few tissues : )
