Bach’s Two- and Three-Part Inventions are a cornerstone of piano technique and musicianship. This collection from the Schirmer Library of Musical Classics includes all 15 Two-Part Inventions and 15 Three-Part Sinfonias, offering a progressive approach to polyphonic playing.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 22, 2014My piano teacher has a master's degree in music from the Eastman School of Music with emphasis on classical studies. As such she has assigned this book as a good place to start with the study of contrapunctual music (having two or more harmonically related parts sounding at the same time).
The book integrates two separate volumes making it an especially good buy. It states that it has been edited by Czerny, Griepenkerl and Roitzsch. Accordingly, it is not the "urtext" as another reviewer pointed out.
As a music student I like the book because (1) the score is large, clear, and easy to read (2) after a fashion the pages lay flat against the music desk and (3) fingering suggestions are ample and adequate. Accordingly, I gave the book 5 stars.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2021I have a 45 year old imprint of this book. After all of these years, it has finally given up the ghost. I purchased this latest copy as a replacement for my original. The material contained within will give any intermediate pianist more technical capability in their playing. Their fingers, wrists, arms, and shoulders will continue to develop as they work through these pieces. I'm a boogie woogie, blues, jazz, fusion player. I still play these pieces as they are fun to play and give me ideas for my own compositions.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 7, 2016I started playing piano again after 45 years away from it. I remembered playing the first C-Major Invention as a 5-year old. I have now learned & memorized four of them & I'm working on a fifth one. I enjoy playing them daily & people who aren't classical music fans really like hearing them. I've made a few listeners fans of Bach by explaining the different voices, bringing out the main themes throughout the piece, the dynamics, etc. in both the Inventions and the "Preludes & Fugues. The fingering in this edition usually suits my particular hands, so I rarely have to stop & re-write any different fingering.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 14, 2021I used to have the Inventions as separate books, which I now realize I prefer. The print is smaller in this publication. Also, I prefer the fingerings in the other editions I had. I still think this was a pretty good purchase since it has both Two & Three-part Inventions in the same book for a good price. It would have been nice if this was spiral-bound.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 7, 2012If you are interested in this material, now is the time to buy it - and here may be the place. It appears that Schirmer is moving to smaller print (in order to save money, I would suppose). I've seen a Schirmer edition of this that I could barely work with. This edition, edited by Czerny, Griepenkerl and Roitzsch Library Vol. 813, Distributed by Hal Leonard # HL50256470 came to me the way I expected, in the classic print size. I was grateful to get it before there were no more left. And from a musical perspective, this is still, in my opinion, the best place to start a study of contrapuntal music for the developing pianist.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2020This is just what we needed for my daughter's piano lessons. Please be aware that there are two versions of this book that look the same and have basically the same notes (I believe), but different fingerings, so you'll want to know which one you want before ordering! This is Volume 16 edited by W. Mason.

5.0 out of 5 stars Valuable version edited by a true artist
This version is a reprint of the old edition by Busoni; for those looking for an urtext you would have to go elsewhere. The Busoni edition from a format point of view is readable but because Busoni added a lot of comments for each piece explaining how it is structured, the actual layout of the music is sometimes a bit compressed. This version provides as it was customary at the time fingering but also articulation and phrasing suggestions; all ornaments are also explained and written in full. You can of course disagree with Busoni point of view but the artistic proposal is always of the highest quality. Busoni was a true musician and though his view of Bach music is obviously marked by his time and his own personality, it is a beautiful version. It is also for those interested quite valuable to see how Bach was edited at the time (but requires a fair level of musical knowledge).
To be noted that Busoni occasionally changes the ornaments as he see fit by the melodic and harmonic context; For example in the very first invention, the first ornaments are changed from a trill to a mordent. Having played many different versions , I actually find that either the inverted mordant or the mordant work best in the context; of course other people may feel free to think completely otherwise.
In addition typically some ornaments are suggested by 19th century standards.
Finally each piece is supplemented with detailed and valuable comments on the structure or way of playing. These comments are unhapilly appended to the music score itself so it makes the music a bit more difficult to read.
In summary I find this version to be a wonderful document; it is full of suggestions, comments and high value musical insights in Bach music by a great artist; however it needs to be supplemented by a full version in a modern edition (Barenreiter, Henle, Wiener, ABRSM, ....).
