Purchase options and add-ons
With the same wit and perception that distinguished his charming books on London, New York, and San Francisco, here this famous Czech painter presents his impressions of Paris in This Is Paris, first published in 1959 and now updated for the 21st century. We see its famous buildings, its beautiful gardens, the museums, the sidewalk cafes, and the people who live there -- artists, the concierges, the flower girls, and even the thousands of cats. Take a tour along the banks of the Seine, or through the galleries of the Louvre, or to the top of the Eiffel Tower. Elegant, vivid pictures of one of the most beautiful cities in the world, This is Paris!

Miroslav Šašek (November 16, 1916, Prague – May 1980, Wettingen, Switzerland) was a Czech emigre author and illustrator, best known for a series of books for children titled This Is..., which he signed M. Sasek.
Originally trained as an architect, he had just begun a career in children's literature when the Czechoslovak coup d'état of 1948 prompted him to emigrate to Munich, West Germany, where he worked for Radio Free Europe from 1951 to 1957. This Is Paris appeared in 1959, starting what ultimately grew into a series of eighteen books. Šašek's This Is London received the New York Times Choice of Best Illustrated Children's Book of the Year in 1959, as did This Is New York in 1960. This Is New York also received the Boy's Club of America Junior Books Award in 1961, while This Is the United Nations appeared on the International Board on Books for Young People Honor List in 1979. Šašek was living in Paris at the time of his death, which occurred on a trip to Switzerland.

- Reviewed in the United States on April 28, 2012I admit, I didn't look at the size when I ordered the book. When it arrived, I was pleased to see it was a nice tall hardcover book in excellent condition, even though I bought it used. This book is not a story, this is an educational book. My daughter is infatuated with Paris, and although she's 11 (note: below grade level reading, preteen mind) she wanted this book. She loves it. It's an easy way for her to remember places in Paris without it being textbooky. It's great for younger kids too of course! It has very nice drawings and brief passages about famous places and common sites of Paris. A nice touch in the later editions is that the editor has put "updates" to information such as: police are no longer on bicycles, but are on motorbikes, markets have moved, and other tidbits of change. If you buy educational books to read to your young children, I'd recommend this one as a nice introduction to the places in Paris. That, and Google Earth (ha ha).
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2024I loved this stuff when I was a kid and now my baby does too. LOVE the adorable illustrations. Fun for all ages. I always questioned how big cities were, how many lived there, how they lived around the world, what people did all day, and loved landmarks and numbers at a very young age so I’m so excited to give these to my kids. Some of these facts I didn’t ever remember I could find out myself until I traveled with a cell phone and I could just google it! To think I could’ve just gotten a book like this as a kid. My school and libraries didn’t have anything like this about the world. Yes this series is definitely more for me than the kids but they love it too

- Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2018We bought this, and other cities in series, before our trip to Europe so our kids could be familiar with some of the landmarks. This book for the bill and they still love reading it. The information is dated on some things, like currency and some services, but there is a list of updates at the very end. The pictures are beautiful. The book is large 8x11, so not one to travel with, but a study hardcover.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 31, 2012We thought we were taking our almost 2 year-old to Paris with us when I bought this book. We ended up going without her, but my daughter loves reading this book. She was too young then for me to read word by word so I simplified it a bit and sang some songs with the story (songs about train, the bus and the donkey). She learned about cats, the painter, the Eiffel tower, the "Un fort", the church, etc. She loves Mona Lisa and knows that Mona Lisa "lives" in the Louvre. She often asks about Mona Lisa and gets really excited knowing that the page is coming up.
The funny this was that she all a sudden blurted out "Eiffel Tower" during our trip to CA. She saw the electric tower that looked a little bit like Eiffel and thought that was it! I think she needs a Paris trip in the future so she can see the REAL Eiffel tower;)
- Reviewed in the United States on October 4, 2022We wanted to get our 2 year old excited about our upcoming trip to Paris and this definitely did the job. He loved pointing things out and asking what they were. Once opened, we had to read it every night for a month ahead of our trip. Oh well. The pictures are beautiful and the prose is good too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Un clásico que no debería faltar, por calidad gráfica y contenido
