―The Rev. Jeffrey A. Mackey, The Living Church magazine (Sept. 2008)
Mancini (founder, Auxano consulting group) believes that all churches need not be megachurches like Willowcreek (IL) or Saddleback (CA). Here, he avoids a mere discussion of churches worthy of emulation and further crosses denominational lines, having himself worked alongside Baptists, Methodists, Lutherans, and others. Mancini eschews the title consultant , preferring instead vision navigator . In short, he helps leaders focus on their own unique cultures and congregational fingerprints. Once churches grasp that they are one of a kind-much like galaxies, fossils, DNA, and sandbanks-they can then, Mancini writes, unleash their full potential. The book, complete with an appendix as well as logos and icons illustrating various churches' visionary thinking, is strengthened by numerous flow charts, diagrams, graphics, and pithy quotes. It has the potential to unseat Rick Warren's The Purpose-Driven Church in popularity. Yet academic libraries may want to pass on this title for its admitted lack of supporting empirical evidence. Public libraries, on the other hand, would be wise to purchase a copy. With a foreword by inspirational giant Max Lucado.
―C. Brian Smith, Arlington Heights Memorial Lib., IL (Library Journal, May 1, 2008)
From the Inside Flap
CHURCH UNIQUE
Church Unique offers church leaders a way to transform their leadership and vision with missional effectiveness.
Church Unique is written by church consultant Will Mancinian expert on a new kind of visioning process to help churches develop a stunningly unique model of ministry that leads to redemptive movement. He guides churches away from an internal focus to emphasize participation in their community and surrounding culture. In this important book, Mancini offers an approach for rethinking what it means to lead with clarity as a visionary. Mancini explains that each church has a culture that reflects its particular values, thoughts, attitudes, and actions, and shows how church leaders can unlock their church's individual DNA and unleash their congregation's one-of-a-kind potential.
Mancini explores the pitfalls churches often fall into in their attempt to grow, such as adding more programs, using outdated forms of strategic planning, or adopting the latest conference technique. He explores a new model for vision casting and church growth that has been tested with leaders in all kinds of congregations, including mainline, evangelical, small, and large. The practices and ideas outlined in Church Unique will help leaders develop missional teams, articulate unique strategies, unpack the baggage of institutionalism, and live fully into their vision.
Whether leading a megachurch or church plant, a multisite or mainline, a ministry or parachurch, Church Unique will provide inspiration as a practical guide for leading into the future. There is a better way.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 18, 2010This is one of the better church growth, missional books I have read recently. This book seems to blend the ideas of positive church growth concepts with the missional focus of the church. The book has some great ideas for congregational direction and mission. One concept was "too many goals threatens to make anyone one goal unclear." This seems to be the case in too many congregations. In years past, the idea for church growth was to added program onto program, and some churches followed this method. The problem was that the churches that were promoting this were already large churches. A two hundred size congregation does not have the resources or the manpower to accomplish this model for ministry. Instead of having bunch of goals, focus on one. The book talks about this need for excellence in one area.
Another wonderful section was concerning the history of church growth to missional. This was clear and highly helpful. I could go on about all the wisdom in this text, but really there is too much. On my Kindle I take notes, and so far this book has the most notes. There are great illustrations, clear information, and deep quotes. This book is definitely worth your time in improving and moving your congregation ahead on the mission of God. Here is one great quote, "If you want to build a ship, don't drum up men to gather wood, divide the word, and give orders. Instead, teach them to yearn for the vast and endless sea." This book teaches how to do this.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 29, 2012Strategic planning was the preferred way forward for many churches over the last several decades, but Mancini argues it produced marginal results at best. In contrast to that well known model, Church Unique offers an alternative framework that is a better fit for the rapidly changing environment of early twenty-first century congregations. More specifically, the book's stated purpose is "to challenge you to find your Church Unique: that is, to live a vision that creates a stunningly unique, movement-oriented church" (p.xxii).
The book is divided into four main parts each containing multiple chapters designed to walk would be visionaries through a very detailed process:
Recasting Vision
Clarifying Vision
Articulating Vision
Advancing Vision
Mancini tells stories of Auxano's work with well multiple well know clients including Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, TX (Max Lucado, pastor) and Stonebriar Community Church in Frisco, TX (Chuck Swindoll, pastor) and with churches that lack a national profile. Church Unique provides a pathway that can be effectively utilized by churches of all sizes and with any denominational affiliation (including those who have no affiliation at all) because it seeks to help churches understand their past, acknowledge their present, and leverage both in service of becoming that which only they can be in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2025This book is a little dated but still relevant. I think it’s helpful to any church or ministry leader (or someone who someday hopes to start or lead a ministry) to see what the unique calling God has for you, the people and communities around you and the unique needs and opportunities you are equipped or passionate about.
Don’t be a cookie cutter church, be true to your calling and be unique in your expression of that call.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 4, 2020The book itself is a good book with great information. It provides a strong perspective and plan to cast vision, capture culture, and create movement. However, the audio rendering of this book is terrible. Will Mancini does not read his own book here. Why not? The reader (William Sarris), if he's not a robot because he sounds like a robot, is not familiar with Mancini at all. Moreover, the reader is unfamiliar with the subject material and often mispronounces words and names. This audio book will put you to sleep! I do not recommend the audio book. Just read the book itself. Moreover, I will avoid books narrated by Sarris in the future.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 24, 2008If you are trying to lead your church to effectiveness and impact, Church Unique: How Missional Leaders Cast Vision, Capture Culture, and Create Movement (J-B Leadership Network Series) by Will Mancini is a "must-have" resource! Like very few books of its kind, this one is not only packed with ideas, it is presented in a clear and purposeful manner with implementation in mind.
Based on Mancini's work with Auxano, Church Unique provides a carefully executed, step-by-step walk through the concepts and practices that build a "vision frame." Discovering and articulating a compelling vision is at the heart, but developing the missional mandate (mission), motives (values), map (strategy) and marks (measures) are what provide the frame. Each step in the process is presented in a way that begs to be implemented.
If you long for clarity and a laser focus, this is a book you will devour, mark up, and wear out. I'm frequently asked what's the best thing I'm reading. Church Unique is a book I'll be talking about for a long time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear and compelling.
For me this offers a through pathway to navigating ones own uniqueness to capturing the very essence of ones church.
It is an all time hand book for engaging ones potential and creating a movement. It does demand more work that I believes will make a mission church more dynamic and effective in the long run. It is truly a workable tool to have.

5.0 out of 5 stars Where have you been all my ministry-life?
This book puts into words and symbols what I've been thinking about and praying for a long time. It's the perfect combination of systems and symbolic-thinking in relation to mission and ministry.

The message of the book rescues the local church from having to follow cookie cutter designs. Must read for every leader.

4.0 out of 5 stars Keeping the main thing the main thing
I read this on the advice of a friend who is church planting in Belfast, with whom I was discussing the thorny subject of vision.
First a gripe: the jargon in these kind of books drives me mad! I know what Mancini and his ilk are trying to do - grappling for language that expresses new concepts - but I was never keen on alphabet spaghetti as a kid, and I'd like to read a leadership book without it now I am a man.
Gripe done with; to the content...
Doubtless many church leaders struggle to articulate a clear and compelling vision for their church, and even more fail to implement it. Vision is much agonized over and many books have been written about it. The thing is, we all know it when we see it! Certain leaders simply embody vision. There is something about them, some charisma, chutzpah, pizzazz which just seems to make things happen, and which often denies analysis. These are the mega-leaders of the mega-churches. Men who are just somehow, well, different.
So I am always a little bit sceptical about vision books, as I don't think just anybody can be turned into a great visionary leader. You've either got chutzpah or you haven't. But I do believe that all of us can work on our strengths, sharpen our edge, and do better at what we are doing.
Does this book deliver at this level?
To large degree I think it does.
Probably the most liberating thing about it is the insistence not to simply copy another mans vision. Mancini warns against the `Conference Maze' in which pastors jump from conference to conference and idea to idea trying to copy the latest successful model. The point of this book is to argue that every church is unique, and by definition, trying to copy the unique success of one model will only lead to disappointment, because the circumstances that created that success are unique to its context. Every church needs to find her own unique vision.
Mancini is critical of the Willow Creek type model of strategic planning, advocating instead a framework that enables the leader to recast, clarify, articulate and advance the vision. He blasts strategic plans as being overly complex, and leading to burnout. He also criticizes the approach that measures success purely on the A,B,C's (Attendance, Buildings, Capital). He is highly critical about overly long mission/vision statements, with multiple goals, too much jargon, and too little specificity. Instead, we should be focussing on what kind of Christian our churches are designed to produce.
One of the most thought provoking single-line statements in the book comes right at its close: "Religious people have preferences; missional people have stories." As visionary leaders, we need to be building churches where people have stories to tell of the transforming work of Christ in their lives.
Central to the book are Mancini's concepts of Mission Mandate (What are we doing?), Mission Motives (Why are we doing it?), Mission Map (How are we doing it?), Mission Marks (When are we successful?), and Mission Mountaintop + Milestones (Where is God taking us?). But to see what he says about those things, you need to buy the book!
