Product Description

This spectacular retelling of Gaston Leroux's immortal horror tale stars Claude Rains as the masked phantom of the Paris opera house—a crazed composer who schemes to make a beautiful young soprano (Susanna Foster) the star of the opera company and wreak revenge on those who stole his music. Nelson Eddy, the heroic baritone, tries to win the affections of Foster as he tracks down the disfigured "monster" who has begun murdering those who resist his mad demands. This lavish production remains a masterpiece not only of the genre, but for all time.

This version had closed captioning for my Mom!! Thank you! Cute movie, we had chuckles at the one-liners. We are having at present a Phantom of the Opera Palooza!!! "Phun!" We are "Phan's"! Even reading Gaston Leroux's book! 🥀

For me this has always been the ultimate Phantom of the Opera movie with Claude Rains in the role of the Phantom. I've never cared for the newer musical version of The Phantom. While the Claude Rains version has music in it when there are operas being performed in the theater it doesn't overwhelm the plot of the movie and is very enjoyable. This is one of those wonderful movies that I used to watch when shown on tv some 30 or so years ago but has seemed to disappear from live broadcasts over the years. So many really good movies don't get air time anymore in favor of a limited variety of movies, most of B grade or "lower" that the cable networks like to repeat over and over and lately even Turner Classic Movies has become guilty of repeating the same movies over and over while other "good" movies never get air time. Cable TV is expensive and doesn't live up to the variety of programming we should be getting for our money these days. I will continue to hunt for and buy movies on DVD to add to my home library because of this and I suspect one day will opt to do without cable tv to have more money available to buy the really good stuff on DVD and streamed movies on services like Amazon.

Plenty of actors have played the Phamtom but nobody did it better than the late, great Claude Raines. I know Lon Chaney Sr. was the first to portray the Phamtom but that was a silent film so Claude Raines was the first talking version that I saw.

Years ago I taped "The Phantom of the Opera" off an old TV Channel. Not to long before I bought my new copy I hauled out the old tape and watched the film. All the colors had shifted and the copy looked like it was old and tired out.
I bought the new print when I saw it was available and had been cleaned up and beautifully restored. I got goose bumps when I saw this new copy. All the life was back and restored. Susanna Foster looked beautiful as the Opera Saprano and Nelson Eddy was in Fine Voice. Not to mention the gorgeous sets in vivid color. I've always said there is nothing like Technicolor. No other process even comes close. The Music is beautiful.Claude Rains makes a fine Phantom. The Screenplay is very good also. Warner Bros. is doing a fine job restoring these old films. I had to give this one 5 stars. I know this is a Horror Flick but it's a beautifully done Horror Flick.

Before writing a film article on Claude Rains for CLASSIC IMAGES (December 2000), I took another look at 'Phantom' to appraise his performance. He's one of those rare actors who can make you feel sympathy when he plays the ill-treated violinist so that you understand why he turns into 'The Phantom'. His performance is just one asset of this handsome technicolor adaptation of the famous story.

Why carp about the changes made for this version? It stands on its own as an entertaining melodrama studded with operatic sequences that give it added dimension. Nelson Eddy has never been in better voice and Susanna Foster is certainly up to the demands of her singing role as the new discovery of the Paris opera house.

The comic aspects of the story are a bit overdone and the only real flaw in the film is having Eddy and Edgar Barrier do silly routines as suitors competing for the hand of Miss Foster. Aside from that, this can still be enjoyed as a horror story set against the Paris Opera background, thanks to the brilliant performance of Claude Rains as the violinist who must hide in the shadows.

The sets are rich and detailed, whether showing the opera house or the sewers below. Understandably, the film won Academy Awards for color cinematography and color art direction. It should have been further awarded for its music. Edward Ward's haunting score was also nominated and contributes greatly to the overall enjoyment of the film.

The horror is muted in this version--but the rich musical highlights are a compensation. Absorbing entertainment, even if purists object to some of the changes made in the screenplay. Makes a nice companion piece to the Andrew Lloyd Webber version starring Gerard Butler and Emmy Rossum.

The extra features on the DVD make it a good buy, including the interview with Susanna Foster and some commentary by film historian Scott MacQueen, as well as production stills and a feature called "Unmasking the Phantom", which includes some interview footage with Foster and Turhan Bey.

This 1943 vehicle is but one in a series of movies that have been based on the Gaston Leroux novel, "Phantom of the Opera," and is the best of the three I've seen. Lon Chaney was a truly gruesome phantom in the 1925 silent movie, but the advent of the "talkies" enabled the production of a more satisfying film. The most recent production featured a phantom with sex appeal--not exactly what Leroux had in mind when he penned his thriller. That, alas, destroyed the tenor of the tale. This version with Nelson Eddy is entertaining as well as spooky, and includes some comic touches that serve to enhance the pleasure of viewing it. Although admittedly Leroux might not own them. Claude Rains' Phantom elicits pity as well as fear. Eddy's mellow baritone is a delight, and just wait for those high notes from Susanna Foster as the young opera singer.

It’s beautifully filmed. The sets are stunning. The phantom is fun. But. The horror aspect barely registers. It’s mostly just music-music-music. If you love opera, you will probably appreciate this film. After a while Susanna Foster’s highest note sounded more like a squeal and it grated on my nerves. There was also too much misplaced humor. People were being killed (offscreen) and no one seemed to care. And. The Phantom (Claude Rains) got third billing and ended up a supporting player in a movie that is supposed to be about The Phantom!!!
