Editorial Reviews
Review
"This is a story about ... the power of the human spirit to soar above tragedy and reunite with joy. Don't let the term fairy tale scare you away, for, as Cohen says, Enchantment is a part of everyday existence. Oh, and it's also a chuckleworthy story." -Kirkus Reviews
"When a young girl asks you to believe in fairy tales, sometimes you just have to obey. In Cohen's capable hands, the unlikely teamwork between an optimistic child and a wary adult makes for a tender tale of first loves and second chances."-Booklist, starred review
"Part fairy tale and, at the same time, heartbreakingly realistic, Cohen's third novel will entrance readers from page one, and by the end, even skeptics will agree that magic can still be found in the most unlikely places and in the most surprising people if only we're willing to look."-Library Journal, starred review
"Life, death, love, loneliness, and grief are the building blocks of Jon Cohen's wondrous new novel, along with nonstop action, humor and a broad cast of characters whose actions converge like a perfectly crafted jigsaw puzzle." -BookPage

- Reviewed in the United States on May 15, 2021This is a beautiful story with a hint of magic and It wasn’t until after I finished the book that I realized just how special this book was. There are some beautiful lessons here, one of which is to share. Share your love and share your burdens. For me, this book had it all: Nature, trees, birds, love, redemption, forgiveness and perseverance. And let’s not forget our love of reading.
Harry has lost the love of his life, his wife. Oriana, has lots her father, her hero.
Harry heads to the forest, for what, he isn’t quite sure. But he does meet an angel in 9 year old, Orinda; a little spitfire. Through forest wanderings, climbing trees, absorbing nature, plants, birds and a very unlikely friendship, Harry’s life begins to have a pulse.
“... he imagined himself a dweller in a serene place he called Harry’s Trees. Floating in the sea of green, safe among friends, some of whom had wonderfully strange names like fire cherry, pignut hickory, shagbark hickory.”
Oriana is a forest dweller and nature is her playground. She’s been given a loaner book called the “Grum’s Ledger”. The book has special meaning to her, which she shares with Harry. The two become the unlikeliest of friends and Oriana convinces him to read the book together and perform some of the tasks in the book. It’s their special secret.
The town has some interesting and quirky characters, which I ended up loving (some seemed a bit dowdy in the beginning). But one single act of kindness, morphs into another and I couldn’t help enjoying the ripple effect throughout the town.
I also love that the library is such an important fixture in the town and the love of books is so heartfelt.
“What else is a library, but a temple of truth? What other function do books have, the great ones, but to change the reader? Books to comfort. But most of all, books to disturb you forward.”
I, too, am a forest dweller and I am lucky enough to live in the woods where redwood trees majestically grow. I’ve spent hours outside, it’s my meditation. Nature is my lifeline. So I loved the story of the forest and talk of feathers and Red-tail Hawks. This book took me on my own little journey.
This was an enchanting, wonderful story and if you’ve ever been lost this might be a good read for you. Believe. 💫
- Reviewed in the United States on May 19, 2024This was a really good book except for the foul, unnecessary language. No one should be tortured by filthy words while trying to enjoy a really wonderful book. I almost stopped reading it multiple times, but the book was well recommended and I wanted to read about Harry and his trees. It would have gotten a 10 without the language.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2021Harry’s Trees by Jon Cohen is an inspirational, sad, and sometimes funny novel about shattered lives, unbearable grief, and redemption.
Harry Crane, grief stricken over the sudden death of his wife, harbors guilt. If only he hadn’t left her for just that moment to buy a stupid lottery ticket. But he did, and now she’s been killed by a wayward wrecking crane and he’s riddled with guilt. He leaves his office job with the U.S. Forest Service and heads for the only place he can find solace—a forest in the Endless Mountains of Northeastern Pennsylvania. Harry is at home with trees. His grief is so overwhelming that he can’t imagine life without his beloved Beth.
While in the forest, he meets Amanda Jeffers, an ER nurse, and her ten-year-old daughter, Oriana. They’re both grieving for Dean, their bigger-than-life husband and father who, without warning, died suddenly a year before. Harry can’t bear to go home. Amanda and Oriana offer him the use of a magnificent tree house that Dean built, just a half-mile from their home.
Wolf, Harry’s older, over-bearing brother, can see that profit can be made from Harry’s tragedy. Wolf instigates a law suit against the wrecking-crane company that killed his sister-in-law, thinking of course that he’s entitled to his share of what promises to be a large settlement.
Oriana, wise and mature beyond her years, learned the ways of the forest from her outdoorsman father. She and Harry can talk trees for hours, call them by their Latin name, know their seasons, their growing patterns, their friends, their enemies. Oriana is an avid reader and, still a child after all, fantasizes that her father will return.
Harry’s Trees touched my heart. The down-to-earth characters, even the ill-intentioned scoundrels, are well crafted. The author knows his trees and his descriptions bring nature’s life to the page. I highly recommend this engaging story of unbearable loss, the strength of the human spirit, and the comfort found in nature.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 9, 2024Thoroughly enjoyed this book. As you might expect there was a LOT about trees but at some point the story becomes less about trees and more about the characters, who were charming, and their relationships that developed. How a widower, a widow and a little girl survive unrelated tragedies to find each other and help each other heal. Such a joyous story. Loved it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sheer Magic!
This is a story about four exceptional characters – (three broken-hearted following bereavement, and a wizened old librarian fighting the authorities to keep her tumble-down library open) – find one another by chance. One is a child, who firmly believes in the magic within one of her library books. Her determination to apply it in reality, despite the adults’ anxious attempts to wean her off such unhealthy ideas, ultimately leads to a mutual, happy resolution of the many hurdles they are to encounter.
It is indeed a magical story; a joy to read, and one I was sorry to finish.

4.0 out of 5 stars A strongly recommended for those who like warm stories and solid characters
What a perfect escape in a time of Covid. Not my usual reading material but wonderful characters, a great story, and an author who shares my love of trees, of books, of simplicity and who has done a very good job of weaving magic into his story. Well done. A perfect book for a rainy night and a comfy chair.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great book
This book is a well written fantasy that is so real! A book about loss but also about new love. A book about the fragility of life but also the enduring of life. This book will stay with me forever!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful!
This book was a pleasure to read! The story flowed well, the characters were believable, and it all came together in a very satisfying ending. I couldn't wait to get to the end, but was sorry when it ended. Perfect!
