Earth Awakens (The First Formic War, 3) Hardcover – June 10, 2014

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 3,355 ratings

The story of The First Formic War continues in Earth Awakens.

Nearly 100 years before the events of Orson Scott Card's bestselling novel
Ender's Game, humans were just beginning to step off Earth and out into the Solar System. A thin web of ships in both asteroid belts; a few stations; a corporate settlement on Luna. No one had seen any sign of other space-faring races; everyone expected that First Contact, if it came, would happen in the future, in the empty reaches between the stars. Then a young navigator on a distant mining ship saw something moving too fast, heading directly for our sun.

When the alien ship screamed through the solar system, it disrupted communications between the far-flung human mining ships and supply stations, and between them and Earth. So Earth and Luna were unaware that they had been invaded until the ship pulled into Earth orbit, and began landing terra-forming crews in China. Politics and pride slowed the response on Earth, and on Luna, corporate power struggles seemed more urgent than distant deaths. But there are a few men and women who see that if Earth doesn't wake up and pull together, the planet could be lost.

From Booklist

In volume three of the the First Formic War series—a prequel series set a century before Card’s classic Ender’s Game—the alien invaders have landed on Earth. Mazer Rackham and his Mobile Operations Police comrades pull off a high-risk mission to stop the mass slaughter in China. Meanwhile, in space, Victor Delgado, who risked his young life in the first novel in the series (Earth Unaware, 2012) to warn Earth of the impending invasion, is risking it again, this time by infiltrating a Formic vessel and trying to find a way to neutralize the alien creatures. But has he been set up by Lem Jukes, the conniving son of a mining-company president who’s feeling mistreated by his powerful father? With a nice balance of violence and political machination, the novel will definitely please readers of the first two books in the series—a series that, it should be pointed out, isn’t merely a spin-off of Ender’s Game and its numerous sequels. Even if there had been no Ender’s Game, the First Formic Wars novels would still pack the same considerable wallop. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Card remains among the biggest names in contemporary science fiction, and his latest will be published to a legion of eager fans. --David Pitt

Review

“The sections that feature highly intelligent, self-reliant children--Card's trademark--are as excellent as ever; elsewhere there's plenty of solid action, well-developed characters….Another solidly engrossing installment, where the aliens are really just a sideshow: What we're witnessing is how and why Ender's child armies came to be.” ―Kirkus Reviews on Earth Afire

“While the reader knows who wins the war, the fate of the engaging characters in this story is up in the air. Thirty-five years after he introduced Ender to the world, it's great to see that Orson Scott Card is still making magic in this imaginative world.” ―
New York Journal of Books on Earth Afire

“The pacing and the vivid action scenes will satisfy hard-core military-SF buffs. At the same time, the characters and the ethical foundations under them are at the high level we have come to associate with Card. Laying their own foundations under Card's Ender Wiggins saga, the Formic Wars promise to add to Card's already high reputation and to his collaborator's as well.” ―
Booklist, starred review on Earth Afire

“Card and Johnston explore human ignorance and compassion through a tapestry of galactic warfare in the second volume of the Formic Wars trilogy.... Social upheavals and political ineptitude are realized through rich characterization and brisk action.” ―
Publishers Weekly on Earth Afire

OK, maybe it's not "technically" a closing. I won't give spoilers, but I'll just say that the last page completely leave open for another trilogy, or single book depending on how/if he continues it. For people who've read Ender's Game, they'll have seen that coming because it's mentioned in Ender's Game that there were 2 invasions by the formics. This covers the full breadth of the first one.

I am a long-time fan of OSC ever since I read Ender's Game back in high school and the three books that comprise The First Formic War trilogy have all become my favorite books (I can't pick one, all three jointly hold my #1 spot). The first had me on the edge of my seat, so did the second, and the third did not disappoint either!

OSC really brings his skills to full fruition for this book that really grips the reader and draws you further into the rich story he's created. I openly laughed at parts and cried at others. I'm hesitant to describe details because I am vehemently opposed to spoilers, so all I can say is it is a very good read.

If you're a fan of OSC, pick up the first of The First Formic War trilogy (Earth Unaware) and read it, then follow to Earth Afire, and finally Earth Awakens. A wonderful scifi trilogy that gives such a full and amazing back story to what ultimately leads to Ender's Game.

Earth Awakens (The First Formic War) by Orson Scott Card and Aaron Johnston – The final volume of The First Formic War trilogy reveals an Earth that is being decimated by the Formic invasion. There is an international effort to stop the aliens, but their superior battle technology appears unstoppable. The reader experiences the failure of the human defense forces to repel the aliens. It’s a very good story that focuses on a small group of military and wealthy resourceful benefactors who must work together to fight the Formics. Unfortunately, there are some puzzling and unbelievable sequences in the book where strange and seemly impossible things happen without explanation. For example, one of the major characters gets inside the Formic mothership and walks through most of the ship in the presence of Formics who don’t seem to notice him. Later he is able to provide unbelievably detailed and valuable information about the ship and its weaponry to the defense forces. However, I still found this book to be an enticing and enjoyable conclusion to the trilogy. It’s an action-packed alien-invasion novel with interesting, resourceful and courageous characters struggling to save humanity from extinction.

Great action, and interesting characters and relationships. A good sci fi drawma and prequel to ‘Ender’s Game.’ Scott Card creates an easy to visualize world.

One of the best books I have ever read. Granted, you should read Enders Game first, and probably the two prequels to this before. But Orson Scott Card, builds such real world scenarios, it is more like it actually happened than a work of fiction.

Personally, although I greatly enjoyed the bizarre series of books that followed Enders Game, I like the prequel much better. It is a practical view of how, as a race - 1) we will likely participate in space (colonizing the moon, mining asteroids, etc), 2) how we would react to a new co-habitant in our universe, and 3) how society may look given these two things.

OSC is a student of earth and earth cultures and it shows.

This is the third book in the series, with (I suspect) at least one more coming (more on that in a bit).

First, however, with some analysis of what's really going on with the design of the series. If you look at the "Graphic Novels" that are being sold, you will see a bit of a trend. The Graphic Novels are actually compendiums of comic books! These were (I'm speculating here) most likely plotted out by Orson Scott Card (OSC) and then completed by other contributors. These comic books have then provided a storyboard for the books that we are seeing on this topic. So, the story is already out there & the authors & publisher saw a way to re-monetize the story!

Second is the fact that it's now not purely an OSC production, but a collaboration of OSC, the comic book contributors, and the second name on the books. Therefore, the sequence is being released as the authors can expand and flesh out the characters.

OK. That said, what about this book? Bottom line, it is an improvement. There is some expansion of the horizons & some better character development. The military is still ineffective. The politicians are nowhere to be seen. The heroes are all over the place. And the Bugs are still spraying their version of Roundup!

The problems with the book are fewer than in the previous two books. Here's my take:

1) Character titles: The Chinese Captain is promoted to Major and then still referenced as a Captain.
2) The Alien space ship is penetrated by Victor (who retreats). Later he seems to have a much broader knowledge of the ship than his initial adventures would explain.
3) The space battle physics fails some of the basic tenants of Newtonian Mechanics. My reference here is Lem Jukes in the dogfight. You just can't maneuver in space like that. Well, you can, but it would consume a heck of a lot of fuel!

I'll give the book a large grain (no a whole shaker) of salt on many of the technical topics because it is, after all a science FICTION book.

Final note. This isn't a trilogy. More books are to come (reference the last chapter)! This isn't a spoiler as the setup for this is actually hidden in Ender's Game. This book doesn't get to the climax/closure explained in Ender's Game.

I have been enjoying the Ender series for a while now. This series begins before Ender was born and explains how the IF and training started. The characters are great and believable and not all of them make it! It was a great series!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Grande grandissmo Orson Scott Card
