After twenty-three years, Orson Scott Card returns to his acclaimed best-selling series with the first true, direct sequel to the classic Ender's Game.

In
Ender's Game, the world's most gifted children were taken from their families and sent to an elite training school. At Battle School, they learned combat, strategy, and secret intelligence to fight a dangerous war on behalf of those left on Earth. But they also learned some important and less definable lessons about life.

After the life-changing events of those years, these children―now teenagers―must leave the school and readapt to life in the outside world.

Having not seen their families or interacted with other people for years―where do they go now? What can they do?

Ender fought for humanity, but he is now reviled as a ruthless assassin. No longer allowed to live on Earth, he enters into exile. With his sister Valentine, he chooses to leave the only home he's ever known to begin a relativistic―and revelatory―journey beyond the stars.

What happened during the years between
Ender's Game and Speaker for the Dead? What did Ender go through from the ages of 12 through 35? The story of those years has never been told. Taking place 3000 years before Ender finally receives his chance at redemption in Speaker for the Dead, this is the long-lost story of Ender.

For twenty-three years, millions of readers have wondered and now they will receive the answers.
Ender in Exile is Orson Scott Card's moving return to all the action and the adventure, the profound exploration of war and society, and the characters one never forgot.

On one of these ships, there is a baby that just may share the same special gifts as Ender's old friend Bean

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Set between Card's Hugo and Nebula–winning Ender's Game (1985) and Speaker for the Dead (1986), this philosophical novel covers familiar events, but puts new emphasis on their ethical ramifications. In the wake of his victory over the alien Formics, 12-year-old military genius Ender Wiggins is hailed as a hero, but governments opposed to the International Fleet, which trained him, intend to portray him as a monster. Ender winds up as titular governor of one of the new human colonies, where he struggles to adapt to civilian life and ponders his role in the deaths of thousands of humans and an entire alien species. His agonized musings aren't always sophisticated but possess a certain gravitas. Fans will find this offering illuminating, and it's also accessible to thoughtful readers new to the series. (Nov.)

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School—Here is Card's answer to all those readers who asked, "What happened to Ender?" between Ender's Game (1985) and Speaker for the Dead (1986, both Tor), a gap that covers nearly 3000 years. Twelve-year-old Ender Wiggin should be coming home to a hero's welcome after wiping out the dreaded buggers—aliens who have twice defeated humanity in the past—in a fierce space battle. He is instead proclaimed a dangerous weapon and appointed titular governor of a colony world to keep him as far away from Earth as possible. His beloved sister Valentine joins him on the colony ship but is unable to penetrate the barriers he has erected around himself. Wracked with remorse at his genocide of the buggers, Ender searches for the reason the aliens allowed him to defeat them, knowing the answer will give him direction. As in most great speculative fiction, Card mines the depths of humanity's philosophical and political ideas through Ender's trials and discoveries. Exile brings together many drifting story lines from a number of other books in the series, so it's not for the uninitiated. For those who are familiar with Ender and his world, this is a wonderful treat to be devoured whole in a gulp and then returned to later to digest at leisure.—Charli Osborne, Oxford Public Library, MI

Orson Scott Card is the author of the novels Ender's Game, Ender's Shadow, and Speaker for the Dead, which are widely read by adults and younger readers, and are increasingly used in schools. His most recent series, the young adult Pathfinder series (Pathfinder, Ruins, Visitors) and the fantasy Mithermages series (Lost Gate, Gate Thief, Gatefather) are taking readers in new directions.

Besides these and other science fiction novels, Card writes contemporary fantasy (Magic Street, Enchantment, Lost Boys), biblical novels (Stone Tables, Rachel and Leah), the American frontier fantasy series The Tales of Alvin Maker (beginning with Seventh Son), poetry (An Open Book), and many plays and scripts, including his "freshened" Shakespeare scripts for Romeo & Juliet, The Taming of the Shrew, and The Merchant of Venice.

Card was born in Washington and grew up in California, Arizona, and Utah. He served a mission for the LDS Church in Brazil in the early 1970s. Besides his writing, he teaches occasional classes and workshops and directs plays. He frequently teaches writing and literature courses at Southern Virginia University.

Card currently lives in Greensboro, North Carolina, with his wife, Kristine Allen Card, where his primary activities are writing a review column for the local Rhinoceros Times and feeding birds, squirrels, chipmunks, possums, and raccoons on the patio.

I first discovered Card in 1991, when my soon to be father in law gifted me a copy of Seventh Son. I quickly devoured that novel, and everything else I could find authored by Orson Scott Card. While many people are enamored by his stories, as I am as well, what brings me back to this well is Mr. Cards dedication to his characters.

The world building, plots and ingenious detail are captivating, Cards ability to write a character, any character, that has the depth of a family member to the reader, is by far his greatest gift. From the Enderverse and the Alvin Maker Tales to his stand alone novels like Homebody and Treasure Box, Mr. Card has masterfully crafted character driven stories that remain in my mind for years after enjoying the book.

Exile is no different, and in fact provides the enrichment of these characters I didn't even know I craved until I read the book. I would guess Orson Scott Card will go down as one of the true geniuses of story telling.

After waiting for this book for years, the week when it finally became available, the home budget was tight and I couldn't justify buying a new book, then as things got back to normal, I put it off and finally got around to getting it last week, and read it this week.

So was it worth the wait? Well, yes and no.

The "no" part came from the fact that I had already read many of the pages that came from the short stories I had already purchased and read on OSC's e-zine Intergalactic Medicine Show and part because it really lacked the typical flow of cadence in an OSC story, probably due to the fact that it seemed to be a collection of novellas rather than one story. But what do you do, when people are clamoring for a story from you nonstop? I imagine you try to make a marketable product while there is a demand for the product.

So the "yes" part it ties up a lot of loose ends in the enderverse. I would have liked them to be tied with some different bows, but I was still very moved by the story lines and especially by the overall morality of the Ender stories, that family is what is worth living and dying for and the world of man owes huge debts of gratitude to those who willingly sacrifice so the rest of us aren't forced to.

What I am also fascinated with, is how OSC has created such a desire in his readers to know the contents of his two imaginary books "The Hegemon and The Hive Queen". I think personally he is smart to not write them down, because how could they live up to expectations. But one wonders.
So here's the deal,
Ender in Exile is a book that is only for fans. If this is your first book in the series, I think you will be frustrated. However, if you read all the Shadow books before reading this I think you will enjoy it very much. I know I did.

I Recommend reading this first!

I've been a longtime fan of Orson Scott Card's Ender series (almost all of Orson's books, actually), and it was a pleasant surprise to learn that another book had been released. I've read both the Shadow series as well as the original Ender series. This book compliments both. While it is touted as a direct sequel to Ender's Game (and to some extent it is), within the author's note at the back of the book, Orson Scott Card reveals that he feels it's more a part of the Shadow series than a sequel to Ender's Game.

That being said, the book really does take off almost immediately after Ender's Game. The War with the Formaics has been won, and Earth is debating as to whether or not to allow Ender to return. Peter and Valentine, Ender's brother and sister, get involved, and it's very interesting to see how they feel.

The book continues by talking about the voyage that Ender and Valentine experience as they travel to Shakespeare, the settlement Ender has been sent to govern. We learn about his battles with understanding the Hive Queen and why they decided to let Ender kill them, and even find out more about Bean and Petra's lost child that is "forgotten" during the end of the Shadow series.

All in all, a fantastic book. I will say that it wasn't a book, at least for me, that kept me dying to read more, but it did hold my attention. I never felt like it was too slow, but it was exciting enough that I continued through it.

If you're an Ender fan, this one is definitely worth the read.

4.0 out of 5 stars like all of OSC's books
Reviewed in Australia on August 28, 2015
An excellently well written book, like all of OSC's books. Unfortunately I found myself disliking Ender somewhat towards the end of the book. His treatment of his parents was rude. John-Paul and Theresa used to write to him all the time in Battle School, sure Graff never forwarded the letters but he found out after he defeated the Formics. Yet he never responded, then all of a sudden he gets upset because they stopped writing to him and therefore didn't write to them for 50 years? Lame.
