- Reviewed in the United States on November 26, 2016Dennis Livesey is a skilled photographer and this is a beautifully photographed book, Along with the extensive black and white images along with a shorter section of color comes an interesting narrative accompanying the Smoke Crew section along with beautiful formatting including well placed and styled quotes accompanying some of the images. The high quality presentation and image reproduction, along with the varied compositions of both railroad and human interest, make the volume attractive not only to the train buff but to those attracted to high quality photographic art as well as those interested in the operations of an active historical preserve of a key component of culture and industry. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2016You don't have to be a railfan to love this book. The photography is powerfully beautiful, evoking not only the sights, but the sounds, the smells and the raw strength of these magnificent machines. The text pays ample tribute to an amazing history and to the people, past, present and future who build, maintain and operate the equipment. Dennis Livesey's photographs are works of art, which fittingly portray these iron wonders with the richness, the power and the beauty that they deserve.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 21, 2016Smoke over Steam Town is an intimate look inside a by gone era of Railway travel and equipment. Every shot is a glimpse into the workings of railroading of yesteryear.
Dennis Livesey takes us on a journey and shows us people with skills knowledge that many no longer have. Running these locomotives is becoming a lost art. Your are getting a peak at the people inside that keep these trains running. Every frame tells a story. Beautiful work all around.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 5, 2017The photographs of these mighty steam engines are stunning... Pretty unique of how the book talks about the hard working railroad men of Steamtown talk about their job experiences of railroading such as being engineers, firemen, and conductors. These mean and lean iron machines such as the ones in this book is what built America. If you're a train lover and rail fan I would recommend this book.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 12, 2017This is a wonderful book, a cinematographic experience really (and the author's experience as a camera man may be the cause of that). It's a look inside the world of steam and the folks who run that steam at Steamtown National Park that provides amazing stories and information on how to run a steam engine as well as breathtaking artfully framed photographs that lift your spirits during your edification.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2017This book was a total disappointment. It was all about one engine at Steamtown. The book only had a couple of pictures of other locomotives located there. The photography was excellent though. We bought this book to see and find out what ALL is on display at Steamtown, but, not so. We highly recommend the 'other Steamtown' book called "Steam over Steamtown" by a different author. Good book that details most all of the 'other' engines.
