Brains (Young Genius) Paperback – January 1, 2007

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 27 ratings

Young Genius is a bright little boy who escorts children through the pages of this amusing and instructive color-illustrated book. Kids will discover answers to many interesting questions about their brains. For example: How can you look at your brain without taking it out of your head? Where do headaches come from? What is imagination? Does having a big brain make you more clever? Young Genius books explain different parts of the human body to children, showing and telling kids how each part works. In each book, Young Genius also talks about nourishing foods to help keep those body parts in great condition, and he asks questions that will prompt boys and girls to giggle--but also to get a clearer understanding of how their bodies function. The language is easy enough for children in early grades to understand, and the information is sound and reliable. One illustration in each book features tabs for kids to lift, look, and better understand how their bodies work. Cartoon-style color illustrations on every page.

My 5 year old daughter LOVES this book. She had me read it several time over the first few weeks. She'll now periodically go back and look through the pictures. She repeats things she's learned all the time. She already was interested in being a scientist, interested in the human body, but this took it to a new level. I think it would work for ages 4-7 or 8

UPDATE: 5 years later, I have two more kids who have enjoyed this book. I can't believe it has so few reviews. This is my favorite scientific book in our kids library, and we have a lot!

He's super into science and the human body and wants to be a doctor someday. These books were great ways to explain human body functions in little kid terminology. He really enjoyed them.

I read this with my seven year old son. He really liked it. We also read "How Does Your Brain Work" by Don Curry and "The Brain: Our Nervous System" by Seymour Simon in a similar time frame, but my son enjoyed this book the most. My son was the one who wanted to give it the 5 stars. He really enjoyed some of the images like how if you ironed out the wrinkles of a brain it would be enough to make an alien outfit. Personally I thought some of these types of comparisons were perhaps a bit misleading, but then I'm not the target audience and at this level engagement is the key. The book included a pop up part which demonstrated the left and right sections of the brain and he enjoyed this. We wrote this review as a collaborative effort.

I really enjoyed that it gave plenty of detail about the brain. I was glad it gave plenty of examples of "good brain juice" and "bad brain juice." I did not like the way the pages were laid out because it was hard to focus on what to look at first. Other than that, a great book.

I bought this book for my 5-year-old niece, and she loves it. The pictures are really bright and colorful, and she learned a lot about the human brain and nervous system. She reads it almost every day and remembers a lot of the information later. I would recommend this book to any child with an interest in the human body.

My second graders loved this book. It is engaging, fun, and educational. I love the page where the flap turns to show the left and right sides of the brain and the functions. Excellent resource for Brain Awareness Week activities as well. I highly recommend this!

Would have really liked for the book to at least mention left and right hemispheres, and their basic functions (logical vs artsy, etc). Other than that, the kids enjoy the book.
