- Reviewed in the United States on December 30, 2014I keep this in my car so when I have time to head out for a hike I have it with me
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2010Sequoia and Kings Canyon, two adjoining parks just south of Yosemite, are among the premier hiking destinations in California. Most of the land they encompass is wilderness and roads only touch upon the western boundaries of these parks. Some of the best backpacking in the state is found in these two parks. But most visitors barely have time for a few days, or in some cases a few hours, and this is where Laurel Scheidt's book comes in. It offers twenty hikes, with relatively little elevation gain (relative is the key word here--in the southern Sierras, less than 2,000 feet might be considered easy) that can be hiked in an hour or at most half a day. All are readily accessible to the roadway.
For the most part, this is the same book as the first edition. The hikes have not changed. Scheidt still divides the park into seven geographical regions and offers two to four hikes in each. Classics such as Crescent Meadow, the General Grant Loop, and Tokopah Falls are all in this book. Each hike includes a sketch map, detailed directions to the trailhead (with GPS coordinates) and a point to point route description.
A few things have changed. Scheidt's introduction is a little longer and covers more of the flora and fauna found in the region. Many of the reviewers of the first edition wanted to see more along these lines and she has obliged. New trailheads have been noted, particularly for the popular Congress Trail. What was a 1.9 mile hike is now a 2.7 mile trek due to the park service moving the trail head for the General Sherman tree. It is still well worth your time as this is the premier hike in the Giant Forest. On the downside, the sketch maps are actually a little less detailed in the second edition of the book than the first.
My main complaint, such as it is, is that so many more hikes deserve inclusion in a book like this. The number of trails available to day hikers is truly staggering, and this book does not begin to cover them all. Moro Rock, Buena Vista Peak, the Manzanita Azalea trail loop, and many others deserve inclusion, but one suspects the publisher imposed strict limits on space. Still, if you are planning a 3 day weekend trip to the parks and want to know where to explore, the new edition of Scheidt's book on Best Easy Hikes is a good starting point.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 5, 2014I own both this book, as well as the full sized version it's excerpted from. Pay the extra ten dollars (or whatever it might be and get the full version) and you won't be disappointed.
This book lacks the focus a day-hike publication needs. However, the full sized version has traveled to Sequoia with me three times for well over a hundred miles of hikes in various parts of the park.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2011This looks like what I wanted. It arrived on time. I won't have a chance to use it until spring. Nice size for taking on hikes.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 22, 2016The book failed in the worst way - after reading a description of a hike I was unable to decide if I want to go. Descriptions are short and entirely devoid of details related to beauty, attractiveness or entertainment value. There are also no photos.
Aside from the main problem, there are some purely technical issues. Trails' information does not include altitude profile (or altitude gain/loss data). One can sometimes figure out trail's quality by reading the description but this data isn't in the header either.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 3, 2015Nice little book for a first timer too.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2015This is a good start for familiarizing with hiking options before you're there; a lot of the hikes are also advertised elsewhere and once you're there. The categorization into different types of hikes, i.e. 'waterfall', or 'kids', or 'views', etc., is very helpful in preparing, as well as length, indication of time it takes, and indications of climbing needed. Good to keep in mind that seasons do differ in options, but this book is not mapping that. Many roads will be closed in winter, while the longer hikes will need to be done on either ski, snow boots, or are maybe better not done, for lack of trail indications. The shorter ones are still 'easy', although you will need to be prepared for hiking on ice or snow. We visited in November, many roads were closed, trails not accessible due to snow; beautiful, but limited. FYI: This being written in 2015, the entire Kings Canyon was not available due to the Rough Fire, and unclear when it will re-open. Recommend to get a good map with contours/elevations of the park, prior to going, to get a better feel for it, and the distances. Also not included, but recommended; Crystal Caves, which has a short, but beautiful trail down and up from the cave, which itself is very special. Especially recommended for families.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good size
Nice little book with a good description of Day hikes which are easy to follow. The book has a nice size and does'nt weigh much, which makes it easy to bring along on the hikes.

2.0 out of 5 stars Einfacher Wanderführer
Der Führer beschreibt schöne Wanderungen, jedoch hat mir folgendes nicht gefallen
- einfach aufgemacht (viel Text, kaum Abbildung)
