- Reviewed in the United States on March 11, 2010In the 1970s, while growing up in Boise, the city fathers came up with a neat new slogan for the town: Boise is Brighter. Being a rather sullen teenager, I often wondered, "brighter than what." Having since travelled all over the country, I can honestly say, brighter than just about anywhere. Boise has more to offer than just the best college football team in the country; it has outdoor recreation that few urban areas can match, beginning with a green belt system along the entire Boise River. The latter was the inspiration for many similar "greenbelts" around the country, but few can match what Boise has. And for the most part, outsiders have no idea just how "wild" Boise is. That may change with this new book by Natalie Bartley.
Best Easy Day Hikes: Boise is the latest in Falcon Press's very popular series on day hiking. Like other books in this series, this title features detailed directions to trailheads, careful route descriptions with regular point by point trail features to keep you on route. Like all recent Falcon guidebooks, this features GPS coordinates as well and the classic sketch maps continue to be accurate. On the other hand, this book does feature more rigorous hikes than are found in the typical "Best Easy" title. Hiking on the Boise Front can be challenging, especially after rain or snow, or during summer heat.
I was very impressed with the selection Bartley offered. Reading through her book was, for me, a trip down memory lane as I recalled some of the trails I had first explored as a child with (and later without) the company of my parents. Stack rock, the Bruneau Sand Dunes, Table Rock, and Hulls Gulch are all featured prominently in this book, as are newer trails on the Boise Front. All are worth exploring. I don't get back to Boise as often anymore but the next time I go, I will be taking this book along. Highly recommended.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2017For people planning how to spend time during a vacation/camping trip in Boise, or for newcomers to the area, this book of Easy Day Hikes is a winner. Most of these hikes are comfortable, doable, and give you a nice sense of place.
N.B.: Although the book and the posted signs say that dogs must be leashed or within voice control on particular trails, this is a growing problem in Boise. Expect to encounter unleashed dogs, and their waste, with no sign of an owner anywhere. Some dogs are aggressive. Take a walking stick with you if this is a concern. Also, many bike riders either never learned or have forgotten trail manners. Be patient with them, but be prepared for you and your family or group to leap off the trail if some inconsiderate bike rider comes whipping at you with, apparently, no brakes.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 1, 2018It was okay shows hiking trails in the area,,, but the oregon trail has you turning right off Hwy 21, but you need to turn left into the subdivision... we couldn't figure out why the map of the trail didn't match up with the trail we were on...
- Reviewed in the United States on July 13, 2018This book is a great way to begin hiking in the Boise Idaho area. As someone new to hiking in the area, the book provided a great variety of hikes that worked well in familiarizing me with the area and types of hikes available. I have taken at least 8 of the hikes and have found the information informative and accurate. I have now moved on to more demanding hikes but I can say without a doubt that this book really helped me get started.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 28, 2018This is great, I can fit it into my Pac and find new places to explore.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 19, 2014This is a very comprehensive book, great for a beginner hiker or someone new to the Boise area. There are maps included and online resources which are further helpful.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 8, 2015I thought the book would be in color. Kind of disappointed in the size of the book (pocket size) and no color. Other than that, hikes look good!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 28, 2016Nice compact guide for the Boise trail areas.
