About the author

Yes, I am both Joe Quirks.
People say the Joe Quirk who writes the science humor can't be the same Joe Quirk who writes the action/adventure fiction. How many Joe Quirks do you think there are? Both guys are me.
Fiction readers. Science readers. Please. I declare a truce between you. Stop accusing the other readers of confusing the two Joe Quirks. They are both me.
This is what happens when authors don't stick to their category. The professionals advised me: "You might want to change your name so you don't confuse and upset your readers." If I did that, I'd have to change my name every book. My marine mammal book is cute and kid-friendly. Yet my first novel drops the F-bomb so many times, I calculate that if I took out every curse word, the book would be 2/3 as long. I don't want to offend the readers of my curse book if they accidentally pick up my cute book. But I can't change my name every book.
It's time I came out of the closet. I am not only Joe Quirk, I am also the other Joe Quirk.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 3, 2011I gave this book 5 stars because I think once you understand what the book is about and what it is and isn't, it is truly a fantastic book. What the book is is a comparative biology book comparing the human species to other species -- primarily other mammals and our closest relatives, other primates. What the book *isn't* is a dating/relationship advice book, analogous to "Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus" or somesuch. If you're having problems in your relationship, and don't understand why your wife/husband/girlfriend/boyfriend is doing peculiar things that make no sense, this book probably won't hold the answers for you. But if you want to know how human males & females compare with the rest of nature, and learn many surprising facts about our biology, this book is for you. Not everything in the book is about sex, but most of it is. I'm not certain every idea in the book is correct, but it'll all make you scratch your head and say "oh wow" and Quirk provides references for all the scientific research, so you can investigate anything further for yourself. It's also a lot of fun to read, written in an irreverent humorous style -- a very wise approach considering the subject matter and how easy it is to be uncomfortable about it. Anyway, approach this book with the right expectations, a "comparative biology" book for non-scientists, and you will love it. It's fun to read and I zipped through it, and now I'm going back and reading it more slowly and checking out the notes and references where the scientific research comes from.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 21, 2010One of the all-time best books I've read on men, women, and how we got that way.
Deft, literate, informed, but laugh-out-loud funny, by a writer who uses words the way Van Gogh used paint.
Doubtless thanks to its original "Sperm Are From Men . . ." title, prudes and Bible-thumpers prevented this book from being a best-seller in its first incarnation. But it's the all-time easiest way to teach any teenager about the birds, the bees, and that hot number who sits down front in Math class and won't ever smile back. Just leave this book visible around the house. It'll promptly disappear for a week or so. You'll have lots less explaining to do.
But first, read it yourself! You'll learn why there are several millions different genders (according to which switches get tripped in the developing fetus); why being gay is genetic, why bowerbirds go to all that trouble, why men and women have evolved different mating strategies, why gorillas are so poorly endowed, and other arcana you'll never forget.
As a side benefit, Quirk is one of the true masters at coining aphorisms.
His book is a enriched-uranium mine for anyone who has to utter sentences in public!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2009Quirk doesn't really present any mind blowing facts in this novel. In fact, if you've ever taken any sociology/anthropology/psych/biology classes then you're probably pretty familiar with most of the material presented in the book. What makes this book worth reading though is that the material is presented with humor, and not the usual dry, scientific bore-me-to-death prose of similar novels.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 15, 2011Did not expect to read an argument for the evolution of homosapiens from aquatic environments, but Joe Quirks evidence is extremely convincing. This book offers a very unique point of view on the evolution of men and women, relationships, and homosapiens in general. If you are into scientific and biological explanations of why people behave the way they do, then you will not be able to put this book down.
The sense of humor is also great. The dry, sarcastic commentary throughout the book had me legit laugh-out-loud. You can't read this book and not relate to at least a few situations about men vs women behavior and thinking.
Definitely recommend this piece.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 14, 2009This book is a great explanation of the biological roles of men and women and how it plays into our sociology. We do things as men and as women that come from our reproductive instincts and don't even know it! If you're someone that frequently says "I don't understand xxx" (XXX is either men or women), this book can provide answers on how to understand the opposite sex. Many of what we see in the opposite sex comes from our primal reproductive instincts. Best of all the author of this book portrays this information in a light, humored, no-nonsense fashion. A great read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very interesting and entertaining
This is a great book worth reading. I read it years ago and decided to purchase it again on Kindle as I lost my original copy. Very funny yet is based on scientific evidence which I believe holds true. Anyone with an interest in what makes men and women tick should buy this book and after you finish it you will never look at the opposite sex the same again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant!
I was recommended to read this by my psychology teacher and since then have given at least 4 friends (male and female) copies. I've read it 3 times and each time can't put it down.
I quite like the fact that it isn't gender biased - it's not a man-battering rant which some books of this ilk can be. But neither is it a justification for some of the worst traits of male (or female behaviour!) you sometimes see in this grim world.
It is interesting, if slightly repetitive towards the end.
Well worth a read whether married, single or just mystified by the opposite sex - if nothing else it will give you some amusing facts and daftness to use dring a quiet moment of a conversation ("did you know about chimpanzees testicles")
Brilliant!
