Connect: 12 Vital Ties That Open Your Heart, Lengthen Your Life, and Deepen Your Soul (New York) Paperback – April 1, 2001
Purchase options and add-ons
What are these connections? They are the feelings of being part of something that matters, something larger than ourselves, whether it is a friendship, marriage, team, company, or even a set of ideals. They can enrich your life, and their absence can shorten it. They are the key to what counts in life, and they are becoming harder and harder to make.
Now a noted psychiatrist outlines the steps we can take to make or reaffirm the connections that nourish the hungry heart. Through his own life experiences and those who have shared their stories with him, we learn of the great joy and peace that come from connecting, and the consequences of remaining detached. And we learn how to nurture that part of us which is so often neglected, and so very crucial to our emotional, psychological, and physical well-being -- our connections.

Edward (Ned) Hallowell, M.D. is a board-certified child and adult psychiatrist and world authority on ADHD. He is the Founder of The Hallowell ADHD Centers in Boston MetroWest, New York City, San Francisco, Palo Alto and Seattle.

His Hallowell Centers offer comprehensive mental health diagnostic and treatment services to patients and their families.
Dr. Hallowell is the host of his new podcast called Dr. Hallowell’s Wonderful World of different where he celebrates the world of different in its many and varied forms. - Reviewed in the United States on December 27, 2014I am a clinical psychologist and I have found this book very stimulating and it has led me to think more about connections in my patients as well as my own. It's important to look at my patients' support systems. Many have very limited support systems and many lack the trust to try developing them; it's too frightening and perceived as too dangerous. I find that sometimes I become that support system, and that our reception staff sometimes joins that system. Having worked in clinics with differing views of how to interact with patients, I have seen the value of the front desk and the person that answers the phone. I now work in a Christian counseling center and the difference I see here and my last clinical setting is enlightening and a bit sad. I worked for 16 years in the last one before this one and watched the "connecting" go from very good to nil, all because of an office manager who viewed the clinic as like any other business. What a tragedy! The reaction of patients was as one would expect, a feeling of alienation and a perception that no one really cared about them beyond their payment for "services". It was one reason I left, though I only realized it later. It is unfortunately the case in many doctors' offices now. What a pleasure it is to work where connecting starts with the first contact.
The book also helped me further realize that too much of my own connection was with my work and my patients. There was a time that I had close friendships and sadly I have lost those and failed to build new ones of sufficient depth. I see so many who fear friendship and so many who are estranged from family or have a member who has cut himself/herself off from family. Hallowell doesn't address this as much as I think he should have, but Laura Davis does in "I thought We'd Never Speak Again". Hallowell's "Dare to Forgive" is an excellent supplement to this book.
I really have no remaining family of origin except for an estranged sister and I have yet to decide what to do about that relationship. I have 2 nuclear families in a way and re-connecting with ex- and steps is going well. Here I have been indulging in something Hallowell integrates beautifully into his book; he uses personal experience in a way that enhances his points. His other books are also very personal, something I find refreshing; it seems natural to him and says a lot about the kind of therapist he is. I guess I included personal information as a way of learning about myself. The book had a strong impact on me and I strongly recommend it, as I will to some of my patients. Hallowell's writing about his religious beliefs was also refreshing, especially since my church family means to me.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 25, 2016Such an amazing book, describing humans connections to life. I'd say, this book is a very useful tool for life. Lots of information regarding daily and long term struggles that I'm sure everyone can relate to. An absolute eye opener.
I don't want to spoil any of it, but if you're reading this, then I'd highly recommend reading this book.
Simply love it.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 29, 2019Soulful...real deal..common sense ideas..musings..stories. Ned seems to be a kind and gentle soul. I keep this lovely book on my bookshelf and go back to it again and again. I just pick any chapter and feel great...very inspiring and easy-peazy to read.. I think that connections w/people, places and things are vital to our happiness and health. It restores my faith in humanity and hope in this troubled world we live in. It's always timely .I think it's a Masterwork. It never grows and tired on me...stood the test of time. I highly recommend it. I bought a copy to 2 of my physicians. Perhaps I'll meet him someday and just thank him for this little gem.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 8, 2011This book had some very practical advice on how to focus your energy on the connections that matter most. The stories Hallowell tells are relevant and helpful, but what I would have liked to see more of was specific steps on how to improve the connections he talks about. Overall a really good book!
