Yellowstone National Park is one of the earth's most famous places. Established in 1872 as the world's first national park, it has preserved remarkable natural wonders like Old Faithful Geyser and cultural icons such as Old Faithful Inn. For centuries, it was home to the Shoshone, Crow, Bannock, Blackfeet, and other Indian tribes, but these groups were banished in the 1870s by park
promoters who feared that tourists would not visit if American Indians lived there. Almost immediately after its establishment, Yellowstone became the primary destination for tourist travel to the American West following the Civil War. By 1900, it was a vast tourist success, and today it is both a world biosphere preserve and a world heritage site.

About the Author

Lee H. Whittlesey and Elizabeth A. Watry are longtime Yellowstone residents and trained historians. Whittlesey serves as park historian for the National Park Service at Yellowstone, and Watry is finishing her master's degree at Montana State University and writing another book on Yellowstone history. In this volume, they have gathered more than 200 photographs―most of which have never before been published―from a variety of repositories, including the Yellowstone National Park photograph archives, the Library of Congress, Yale University's Beinecke Library, the Utah Historical Society, and several private collections.

Bought this when my friends and I hiked through Yellowstone. It was a good read and I left it at the campsite for the next hikers.

Arcadia books are great for historical photos available in archives but difficult to find individually.
The Yellowstone National Park book has an eclectic mix of photos and historical information that supplements natural history types works.
Some historical photos of natural features like Old Faithful taken shortly after the area was discovered by Whites illustrate what a good thing it was that the place became a protected national park.

My favorite book on Yellowstone!!! I originally bought it as a gift and liked it so much I decided to keep it for myself and order another to give. I can't wait until we visit again this fall and I'm full of Yellowstone facts. I may actually bring it along.

Lee Whittlesey has done it again and given us another book on Yellowstone that is full of history, that is so easy to read and is hard to put down once you have read the introduction.

I am a family genealogist and have been gathering books written by or about Whittleseys. I don't always read each of them from cover to cover but do copy the covers and inside jacket leaves, preface and other pertinent information to post on our family website for sharing with the whole family.
