The Athlete's Guide to Sports Supplements Paperback – June 18, 2013

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 64 ratings

A countless number of new, renamed, and variations of sport supplements flood the market each year. Many of these are accompanied by slick marketing campaigns promising too-good-to-be-true results. For athletes seeking a safe, effective edge to their training and performance, supplements can be a confusing and serious matter.

The Athlete’s Guide to Sports Supplements separates fact from fiction, provides quick answers to the most common questions, and delivers information you can trust.

Sport nutrition and supplement experts Kimberly Mueller and Josh Hingst provide concise descriptions for 120 of today’s most popular supplements. For each entry, you’ll discover what it is, how it works, potential performance benefits, research studies and outcomes, dosage recommendations, and possible health concerns. You’ll also find recommendations for master’s athletes, those competing in extreme environments, and those with special dietary needs, such as food allergies, diabetes, and vegetarian.

Best of all, each supplement is listed alphabetically, providing quick and easy navigation throughout the book. Alternatively, use the supplement finder to locate supplements for a particular purpose, such as recovery, endurance, and strength. And for ease of searching, many of the supplements are thoroughly cross-referenced by scientific and popular names.

With more than 120 supplements, recommendations for all athletes at all levels, and expert advice that you can immediately apply, The Athlete’s Guide to Sports Supplements is the one training and performance resource you’ll turn to again and again.

This book is a must read for any person involved with either general nutrition or strength and conditioning. The material is presented in an easy to understand format, and it provides plenty of scientific evidence to back up the authors' points. I'm a chiropractic student with personal training and strength and conditioning certifications, and this book will be a staple in my practice library.

I was very excited when this book was released and purchased it immediately. I teach a Dietary Supplement course to sport dietitians, athletic trainers, strength and conditioning and health promotion students. In this course Sport Supplements do take a strong focus. There is only one other book on the market that deals with Sport Supplements--and that is a very technical book and doesn't cover too many supplements, just provides overview of study after study and very dry. This book is great because it is easy to read and has a compilation of lots of supplements that athletes might use for sport enhancement, not just the typical ones one would think of. Each supplements has a section on different names the dietary supplement can go by, a description of the supplement, when applicable food that the nutrient is found in (i.e., omega 3 would be found in fish, etc), how the supplement works, what, if any, performance benefit there is, and an overview of the research, common usage and health concerns. There is also a table with an "at a glance" of supplements and whether they have benefit or not for various types of metabolic status (Hydration, recovery, injury, etc). Finally, if that weren't enough, there are several chapters devoted to overview of sport nutrition topics on peak performance and special conditions (i.e., the athlete with diabetes). I was really happy to see a wide range of supplements covered --more than just creatine and beta alanine...it also addresses adaptogens, vitamins, and quite a few others. It has a nice chapter that addresses the problems with the sport supplement world in terms of regulations, safety and contamination issues, how to read a supplement label (VERY important for the informed consumer). It is written by a Registered Dietitian who is also a CSSD (Certified Sport Dietitian) which is a bonus. This book is a 5 star book for the average consumer and reference for healthproviders working with athletes. What I wish this book would have (and would give it 5 stars then) is just a bit more mechanistic action and a little bit more research than it has (Though even as an instructor, it does provide me with a great source to develop my lectures from). It is great that they provide the bottom line of the research--but as an educator, I'd like a list of the exact references at the end of the chapter and just a bit more (but mine is a special situation). Don't let that deter you from buying the book-- it is a great book for the average person and provider working with athletes and I am quite pleased with it regardless.

Great resource. If you take a lot of sports supplements you might should check this book out. There are many supplements that might be interacting negatively with prescriptions or food stuff. Then too supplements are sold for the money more so than what they are "supposed to do."

As a registered dietitian, I found this book to be a great resource for athletes and coaches as it simply explained supplement regulation as well as the potential for negative impacts of supplement use. The charts are very useful and easy for clients to understand.
