Not Forgotten: The True Story of My Imprisonment in North Korea Hardcover – May 3, 2016
Purchase options and add-ons
For the first time, Kenneth Bae tells the full story surrounding his arrest and imprisonment in North Korea.
Not Forgotten is a modern story of intrigue, suspense, and heart. Driven by his passion to help the people of North Korea, Bae moves to neighboring China to lead guided tours into the secretive nation. Six years later, after eighteen successful excursions in and out of the country, Ken is suddenly stopped at the border: he inadvertently brought his hard drive, that reveals the true nature of his visits, to customs. He is arrested, brought to Pyongyang for further questioning, and sentenced to fifteen years of hard labor. His crime? Attempting to overthrow the North Korean government. He may never see his family again.
Back in America, family and friends rally support by establishing a website and creating a petition for Ken’s release. Soon, major media outlets decry Ken’s unjust imprisonment, bringing needed attention that culminates in President Obama’s call for prayer on behalf of Ken at the 2014 National Prayer Breakfast. Meanwhile, Ken grapples with his new, solitary reality as a captive of one of the world’s most brutal governments.
From the first harrowing moments of his ordeal to his release—and even today—Ken never wavers in his love for the North Korean people, even his captors. Not Forgotten is both a compelling narrative of one man’s dedication to serving the less fortunate and a modern testament of a missionary forced to rely solely on the God who sent him into dangerous territory. Readers will marvel at the rare, firsthand tour of life inside the most shrouded country on the planet, meeting its people, experiencing their daily lives, taking in the landscape, and encountering the tyranny of a totalitarian regime. With its combined spiritual and secular appeal, this never-before-told story is sure to captivate and inspire readers of all ages.

- Reviewed in the United States on February 3, 2024Pyongyang has always fascinated me in part because they have a medical school with an English curriculum, almost free tuition, and they accept students from all over the world. This is a fantastic first-person account of an American citizen of South Korean descent who was convicted of high treason in North Korea after a sham trial for bringing in a flash drive documenting some of his humanitarian and missionary work that he had been conducting in the country, with permission, for years. He was sentenced to 25 years of hard labor. The book documents psychological and physical challenges, mistreatment, and how the author learned about North Korea’s, infrastructure, expectations of its citizens, and real isolation from the rest of the world. The book ends with the author’s eventual release. The author is the longest surviving American citizen held captive in a North Korean labor camp. A real demonstration of resilience, the power of positive thinking, and love for one’s oppressors.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 5, 2016Well written and quick paced account of Kenneth Bae's 2+ years with the North Korea's judicial system. Since the events are so recent the narrative gives an excellent insight into what is going on now and how the present North Koreans think. This book was very helpful for me to understand better what to us seems so insane but to them is logical. Even the leaders are so isolated from what is happening in the world I think it accounts for their bizarre and counterproductive actions. Several times in the book North Koreans said they just wanted to be left alone but actually it's the exact opposite with the leadership which often behaves like toddlers having a tantrum so as to get the world's attention. It's so sad 24 million innocent people are subjected to living like this in isolation and captivity. I think Kenneth Bae's book shows that most North Koreans are good and honest people with sensitive hearts who love their families dearly. Even though the North Koreans who came in contact with Kenneth Bae were convinced he had tried to overthrow their "beloved" government and way of life, still they were for the most part compassionate towards him. This book is well worth reading if you are interested in North Korea and while I hate to say I "enjoyed" it, I could hardly put it down.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2020Inspiring & harrowing story of Kenneth Bae, a Christian minister, who was held captive in North Korea for 2 years for "undermining their government".
He entered the country leading a Christian tour group who were planning to quietly pray for the country & its people. They were not proselytizing or witnessing to anyone. Were it not for a hard drive that he unintentionally brought into the country, he would probably not have been detained. (The others were not detained.) The hard drive contained information that the North Korean government deemed harmful.
It is the story of his experiences at the hands of this very closed & severe system that lifts its government to totalitarian authority & the Kim family to savior status. Bae's Christian faith was tested, tried, faltered & was ultimately strengthened.
Being a Christian myself, it was a truthful & powerful story of how the Lord sustains us through hard & difficult times as long as we continue to rely upon Him. Definitely worth the read.
I looked at some of the reader reviews of this book & found some interesting & provocative comments from non-believers that Christians might want to read. Those gave me pause for thought & prayer as I try to comprehend how non-believers think & react to Christ & His followers.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2024I read every night before sleeping. This book was fascinating and captured my attention as being very important in my life. I looked forward to reading it every day. The experience he endured has kept me thinking more about God’s presence and the importance of constant prayer and complete trust in Him. I highly recommend this book. It will get you reflecting and back to strengthening your prayer life!

- Reviewed in the United States on September 9, 2016This was a quick read and quite enlightening about conditions in DPRK. The author admitted that he made a stupid mistake. I am an agnostic and from my perspective, I believe that Kenneth Bae is a very naive educated fool. He is 100% responsible for getting himself put in a North Korean prison. He claims to be a missionary and to have spread the word of his "Jesus" to some of the prison guards. I think he foolishly risked his life and endangered others. His stupidity seemed to get some sort of viral following. I guess it was like a bunch of lemmings. When you travel to a place like North Korea and knowingly try to promote something that goes against the government, you should expect consequences. I think missionaries are just nut cases trying to get others to think the way they do. We all have free will at least in this country. I believe one has to be crazy to attempt changing a whole country. Interesting read, but it just illustrates how foolhardy a religious zealot can be. He sure is lucky that our government decided to step in and help him get out.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2025While inspiring, it is a difficult story to read because of what it brings to light about the people of North Korea.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worth a read for so many reasons, not least to gain an insight into North Korean Culture
Is it important to have your Cultural Eyes opened? I think so. We so often live in our own introverted cultural bubble with our own mindset, especially for those of us who grow up in the privilege of freedom which allows us to think and be without recrimination.
This book opened my eyes to the mind control in North Korean Culture.
The story was a reality check for faith in the Lord, and for true perspective on matters of life and death
Kenneth's story taught me the greatest lesson of all; that we live life not for ourselves, but for that greater plan and purpose which achieves so much more, and that sacrifice of self is the greatest expression of love and is to be greatly valued for it's worth.

5.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read
It was great to get a first hand look into the life of a prisoner in North Korea. It showed how the human spirit can endure in times of hardship with the help God gives in times of need. The book left me wondering about those in prison that have no hope or support. May God be their refuge in their time of despair and hopelessness. Praise God for his goodness to those who trust in him.

1.0 out of 5 stars Boring
I was hoping to get more information about the people in North Korea, their lives and feelings, fears and thoughts since he had visited the country for so many years and had to spend so much time in prison there. Instead he just tries to add the reader to his flock and convince the reader of the glory of his god and make you turn to his religion. He says he cares about the people of North Korea, I think all he cares about is his god, he does not care what the need or what they might want, he just wants to convert them all. In various occasions during his time in prison he notes how similar the believes he has in his god and how he and others worship and the cult for the "dear leader". But he sees and judges this only one way, he seems not to realize how one could also judge his own believes as crazy as theirs. He does not want to talk and does not talk about the people there, only about all the glorious miracles his god does for him all the time, totally blind to reality.
I am sorry for what happened to him and wish him and his dear ones a good and healthy live together, may he recover well from this terrible experience.
But I would not buy this book again and I sure will not recommend it, I'm sorry I wasted my money on it.
