Brian Leaf, M.A., is the author of thirteen books, including The Teacher Appears, Misadventures of a Garden State Yogi, Misadventures of a Parenting Yogi, Name That Movie!, Defining Twilight, and McGraw-Hill's Top 50 Skills for a Top Score. He is the only man alive to have written both a yoga memoir and multiple test-prep guides. He is not sure if this is a noble or dubious distinction.
Brian is Director of the New Leaf Learning Center in Massachusetts, where he has helped thousands of students from throughout the United States manage ADD and overcome test and math phobias.
Brian graduated from Georgetown University in 1993 with a B.A. in Business, English, and Theology.
In 1999, he completed a Masters through Lesley College specializing in yoga and ayurveda for Attention Deficit Disorder.
Brian is certified as a Yoga Instructor, Ayurvedic Practitioner, Massage Therapist, Energyworker, and Holistic Educator, and he is an avid meditator. He has also dabbled with Bach Flower Essences, Cranio-Sacral Therapy, Reiki, Shiatsu, and Tai Chi. Can you top that?
So what's the connection between yoga and test-prep? Let's just say that one of Brian's first yoga teaching gigs was at the ETS corporation (Educational Testing Service) in Princeton, NJ. They're the folks who make the SAT. So now Brian gets paid hundreds of dollars per hour to share what he learned while the test-makers were half asleep in relaxation pose.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2017I love this book! I've recommended it to several of my friends. You don't have to read it in one sitting. You don't have to do yoga to love this book. As a matter of fact, I had a back injury a few years ago that prevents me from doing yoga. The insights contained on these pages will benefit you greatly if you perform yogic exercises, but you will gain tremendous insight without doing yoga, nonetheless. I don't know if the author was aware of this when he crafted this book. On each page an action or thought is provided that will help deepen your self-awareness. I would recommend this book for anyone. Do yourself a favor and purchase it for yourself and someone you love.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2017Don't even flip this book from the front to the back. Get to any page and you will either giggle or appreciate the wisdom or find yourself wanting to do the actionable items. It is cute and amusing as it is meaningful and simple. If you teach, take, or believe in Yoga, you HAVE GOT TO get this book! This will definitely be in my top list to read from time to time, and to gift to my fellow Yogis. I am going to class today and I am doing one actionable item. :) Good job, Brian Leaf, for gathering these minds together and coming up with such a unique piece of work. Bravo! And, of course, Namaste. :)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 15, 2018Didn't realize these were prompts for me and not my students during class!
I'll try it anyway.
Would be a nice gift for a new yogi.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 12, 2017Are you looking for a lengthy book with lots of photos showing how to "do" yoga? THIS book is NOT one of those. Get ready to read less and BE. From the very title, "the teacher appears," Brian Leaf sets the stage for the reader to take action and actually practice yoga. Each prompt provides a new way to experience yoga: to focus without distraction; to embrace the moment; to explore and comprehend new perspectives; to practice self-compassion and loving kindness.
Leaf's compilation of 108 prompts is insightful, intelligent, inspiring. Grab your colored pencils, scissors, some glue or tape, and perhaps a few tissues. "the teacher appears" is a gentle, brilliant, and fun way to fully practice yoga-"when the student is ready..."
- Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2017I hate to leave negative reviews, but I must say I was super disappointed. I bought this book because it was advertised as featuring my favorite yogi. Some of the other reviews said it's very inspiring and a great read???? Turns out they were not reviews by verified purchasers. Honestly, this is more like a kid's coloring/activity book...different activities on each page, and lots of blank space. This was not at all as advertised. I was hoping to read some inspiring passages by these great yogis. Instead it was more like a collection of memes I could have picked up online. Sending it back. Sorry.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 24, 2017What a fun book! I love opening to any page and either following the mantra, trying the experiment, challenge or suggestion. The visualizations and the invitations to make a list or answer a short question are so cool! As a long time yogi and a teacher, this book has provided me with quick snippets filled with inspiration and thoughtful inquiry. I also have to say that I love reading the contributions from my all time favorite teachers ~ Govind Das, Krishna Das, Shiva Rea and MORE! Nicely done. (PS, the more you OPEN the book and DO it, the more you will get out of it. Have fun!)
- Reviewed in the United States on January 31, 2017Whether you have been practicing yoga for a long time or are brand new, this book offers prompts for insights and inquiry for anyone wishing to deepen their practice both on and off the mat or meditation cushion. I highly recommend it -- I think we can all use some support and inspiration from time to time. This is the perfect tool and resource to use daily, weekly or when needed. In fact, I think it would be highly insightful to complete a prompt and then refer to it down the road and seeing how your answers/perspective have changed.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2017I have been a Yoga Teacher for 12 years and always looking for simple ways to add prompts or themes to my class. What I love about this book is it's simplicity - life is very complicated off the mat so this is refreshing. A favorite Yoga Teacher Gina Caputo has a hashtag #sincerenotserious when she describes her practice, this book has fun silly activities or ideas that make you smile. Usually a book takes me months to plod through, this one I finished in a day because it made me happy.
If you want a smile buy this book, Namaste from NJ Beach YOGA

1.0 out of 5 stars Pentita di averlo comprato.

Excellent for inspiration

1.0 out of 5 stars Do not buy on Kindle... Or at all.
Regretted this buy immediately! No usable themes! It's basically a journal with many blank pages.
