- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2016As a medical professional and an RYT & RCYT, yoga instructor certification for special needs and adaptative yoga, I was particularly interested in this white paper. I hold a CA teaching credential and our city was one of the first in the nation to offer yoga in public schools. I was very impressed by the content and would highly recommend that anyone,or organization ,considering introducing yoga into their school system read and utilize the information contained prior to creating their proposal. This is the first white paper to be presented for Yoga in Schools.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2016This book is well organized, easy to read, and chocked full of useful information. I couldn't put it down. If you want to know about the best way to integrate yoga into the school day, I would highly recommend that you read this fabulous book. It will be a resource that I am sure to refer back to often in the future. Thanks to all of the contributing authors for sharing your knowledge and experience with us.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2017I think it depends on what you expect from this book. I was expecting a starter guide to help me teach yoga and mindfulness as a school counselor. This was not that product. It is just information on best practices, like a text book. Useful, if that is what you want. Not, "These poses will work for trauma or emotional regulation" best practices, but legal and ethical "You should be trained and certified." " You should run background checks on yoga instructors from the community." That's not super useful for me. I am in a rural district with no budget. I wanted basic, safe, evidence based tools for teaching yoga and mindfulness for emotional regulation. This was not the book for me.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 19, 2016“This publication is a White Book, sometimes also referred to as a White Paper.” It offers comprehensive guidelines for anyone getting ready to, or already in the process of implementing a yoga program in a school setting. The information is clearly focused and each description is so clearly and thoughtfully written.
The book is organized into sections that systematically move the reader through the components of organizing and implementing K-12 yoga in schools initiatives that are sustainable, inclusive of differences (e.g. race, gender, language, religion, culture), and is framed in a whole child philosophy. Detailed step-step approaches for each component are described e.g. creating meaningful and effective systems of communication between organizations, individuals, students, and teachers; relationship building, practicing self-reflection, recognizing trauma’s effects on students, being aware of, and responsive to, the emotional and physical needs of children/youth in the present moment, using play to support learning and development, encouraging well-being and connection for youth, training and hiring highly qualified instructors, collaborating with classroom teachers, aligning a program’s curriculum with existing national, state, local district standards, and offering secular programs in their approach and content.
The intentions of empowering children and youth to develop self-awareness and the skills and abilities to self-regulate inform the practices. As well, the intention of creating a yoga curriculum that can be incorporated into classroom daily routines and schedule, which can support both the teaching and learning process. The authors as a collective of reflective practitioners share with their readers how they utilized their own reflections on their experiences to develop the best practices they are offering.
