Presence-Based Leadership: Complexity Practices for Clarity, Resilience, and Results That Matter Hardcover – February 7, 2018
Purchase options and add-ons
Here is a rich field guide to the territory of complexity, and how leaders can navigate it with leading-edge approaches that generate clarity, resilience, and results that actually matter.
Silsbee's new book is his most expansive. A master of integration, he seamlessly weaves fields as disparate as complexity, leadership and adult development theory, mindfulness, and interpersonal neurobiology into a deeply human exploration of how leaders can bring the fullness of their humanity to the most intractable challenges they face. His immensely pragmatic approach grounds new perspectives with intimate real-world examples. He offers specific, field-tested experiments and practices that invite the reader into discovery and application.
This is a radically new and integrated approach to leadership, through which leaders can tap the creativity and resourcefulness of their internal complexity in order to meet a complex world. Through cultivating an embodied leadership presence, readers will become more dynamic shapers of the context in which they lead, and a creative force for what matters in a fractured and dynamic world.
Presence-Based Leadership is the third and final volume in Doug Silsbee's groundbreaking and influential trilogy on coaching and leadership.

Editorial Reviews
Review
Looking unflinchingly at our outdated worldview, Silsbee makes his case with scholarship, grit, and elegant prose. This is a beautifully comprehensive inquiry into leadership. Written with passion, lucidity, and daring, this will be disquieting to some and useful to all; a wise and pragmatic light on the path of fully being human.
--Richard Strozzi-Heckler
Founder, Strozzi Institute of Embodied Leadership; author of The Leadership Dojo
Silsbee's seminal third book offers radical new perspectives on our internal habits of thought, processing of information, and action. He offers a pragmatic and leading edge resource, offering powerful practices and detailed examples for the crucial work of our times: leaders setting an example for others by improving themselves.
--Marshall Goldsmith

Silsbee's release of his third book completes a trilogy of comprehensive and ground-breaking work. He elegantly navigates the balance of expansion and pragmatism. Practices, perspectives, and real-world examples reveal keys to leadership presence, courage, and resilience in tumultuous times. Hereis an essential, even radical, yet surprisingly accessible book.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 17, 2018THIS IS A KICK BUTT BOOK! Doug Silsbee is an immensely powerful voice for our very troubled times. If every leader, every human... read his groundbreaking wisdom and absorbed his brilliant insights, our world would shift on its axis! Doug's humanity and heart are in every page for sure; what is really striking is how effortlessly Doug guides us along with him on an amazing journey. It's like he is talking right to you and you can feel his heart - feel his passion - feel his wisdom seeping into you. He weaves a tapestry that is nothing short of magical as he pulls together leadership and complexity theory and practice in ways we can all understand. And it gets better! In Presence-Based Leadership, Doug guides us to our own resourcefulness and authenticity in new ways. All his books have resonated with so many people at the cellular level and this book is no exception. And it's so practical - like a field guide to living and leading with integrity and grace. I have had the joy and honor of studying with Doug. He truly is a gift to humanity who keeps on giving. Doug's work and his words literally change people's lives - knowing and working and playing with Doug has made a profound difference in mine! READ THIS BOOK!!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 3, 2018Silsbee’s final book in his trilogy calls upon us as leaders to live and lead in a different way. His calling is an imperative in these times of complexity—to not only look outward at our many external systems—but to look inward into ourselves as complex humans beings. To realize there is much more to access beyond our intellect, and to challenge ourselves to become integral leaders —to be curious enough to gain expanded awareness of our context, identity, and soma as well as how we sense, act or be at any given time. And to practice being in the present again and again and again.
I have had the distinct pleasure and privilege to have studied under Doug Silsbee over the last 14 months, and it’s with complete clarity that I can say this book is an imperative for today’s leaders.
A deep bow of gratitude to this wonderful man and the gifts he has bestowed upon our world at exactly the right time. It’s in our court to bring this new paradigm of leadership into the world!
- Reviewed in the United States on June 1, 2018I love this book! It is a powerful guide for leaders, both new and seasoned, who are open to exploring their own wants and needs in order to show up at their best for all who look to them for leadership. As always with Doug's work, his words are eloquent. After each reading I find myself reflecting on them and looking forward to diving into the next chapters for more! This isn't a quick "how to" but through his nine panes model, a thorough and thoughtful path for those looking to maximize what's already within.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 2, 2019I am a big fan of Doug's work and was very sad to learn of his passing. I found his original "see-be-do" or the three panes a pretty accessible lens, and I could mostly follow when he expanded it to nine panes but to be honest I found the book overwhelming. On the plus side, there's a ton of interesting concepts and ideas and maybe I'll come back to it but this is not the book for someone who wants something easily recalled or applied.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 22, 2018Even more thought-provoking than Doug's earlier books, this one brings a challenge to both embody what is known and familiar and to take a leap into what is emerging and not yet known or understood. Doug captures the experience of many leaders as they move from being subject matter experts to becoming leaders, with all the shifts in identity and in being that this transition (transformation?) entails. A much-appreciated book from a colleague who has been generous throughout his career in sharing his wisdom and enabling the rest of us to gain a foothold in mastering new terrain.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2018Doug's, Nine Panes Model, provides windows of opportunity to show up differently in ways that create spaciousness and resiliency. This is particularly important for me as I navigate the complex space of communities and organizations. I liked the mixture of concrete skills, experiential learning and the accessible framework.
On a personal level, embracing his model has allowed me to create space between some of my well-worn, embodied biological responses as well as my limiting mindsets and identity... opening up a world of choice. Grateful to Doug for his gift to me and this world.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 11, 2018Doug Silsbee’s new book finds it place on the shelf with my most often consulted sources of wisdom, inspiration and practice. Like Presence-Based Coaching and The Mindful Coach, it is generous with new thinking about how we can best navigate leadership in complexity, case studies to illuminate the concepts and practices to land and deepen the learning. It is a book to read, mark and inwardly digest. Doug provides all the ideas and moves to make its study most rewarding.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 30, 2018I am recommending this book to my coaching colleagues, as well as my executive clients. Silsbee nails the issues of complexity today and provides the guidance for navigating, managing, and transforming who we are being in these complex times and situations.

5.0 out of 5 stars Leadership 5.0!!!!!!
Doug Silsbee weaves an incredible tapestry of story, concept and practices, and through this has the potential to create the next generation of leaders (and human beings) more equipped to lead the way people want and need to be lead. With so many (in many cases outmoded) perspectives on Leadership available, Doug's work and this book stands WAY above the stack for those; seeking a new way of being in the world and looking to access themselves in a different way.
If you are looking for quick tips, tricks and the recipe for leadership - this book may not be for you.
If you are looking for a book that; speaks to you in a direct and connected way, with grounded practices, experiments and new ways of being - I highly recommend you get this one!

5.0 out of 5 stars Leadership for Life
Excellent guide for coaches and leaders who are serious about adapting their personal capabilities and the capacity of their organisation to thrive in a VUCA world. We tend to think of presence as a way of being and doing, but it is much more than a description of human characteristics. Doug explores how presence is a process we can use to deepen our awareness and understanding of every aspect of how we make sense and act in an unpredictable and paradoxical world. The book is a tribute to Doug's contribution to redefining what leadership can our quality of life, at a time when our human wisdom is being diminished by AI and Robotics.
