After school, I runned all the way home from my bus stop. That's because Grandma Miller baby-sits me in the afternoon. And I wanted to tell her all about Carnival Night!
"HEY GRANDMA MILLER! IT'S ME! IT'S JUNIE B. JONES! YOUR GRANDGIRL! I'VE GOT SOME IMPORTANT NEWS FOR YOU! THERE'S GONNA BE A CARNIVAL AT MY SCHOOL! AND I CAN WIN A HUNDRED PRIZES AT THAT THING!"
Grandma Miller hurried out of baby Ollie's room. She looked grumpity at me.
"Shh! Junie B! Not so loud! I just put the baby down for his nap!"
My shoulders got very slumping.
"Yeah, only I'm excited down here, Helen," I said.
Then Grandma smiled a little bit.
And she hugged me hello.
And she said not to call her Helen.
"Yeah, only I didn't even tell you the bestest part yet!" I said. "'Cause Mrs. read me the kind of games they're going to play. And so now I can practice them at home. And I will be the bestest game winner of anyone!"
I hurried to the laundry room to get the clothespins.
"They're gonna have a game where you drop clothespins in a bottle!" I hollered to Grandma. "Except for I can't find a bottle in this whole big laundry room. So I'm just gonna drop my clothespins in a bucket. 'Cause that will give me the feel of it, I think!"
I got the bucket away from the mop. Then I dropped all of my clothespins right in that thing.
"Hey, Grandma! I did it! I did it! I dropped every single clothespin in this big bucket. And I didn't even miss one of them! I am a breeze at this game!"
I ran back to her. "Now I need some pennies to practice the Penny Toss," I said.
And so Grandma Miller gave me all her pennies. And I ran back and threw those guys in the bucket, too!
And here's another fun thing! When Mother came home from work, she showed me how to putt with a real actual golf club!
Only no golf balls in the house. So I just putted a grapefruit. And also a dinner roll.
And guess what? That night at dinner I didn't even growl about sitting on the telephone book. 'Cause everything was going my way, that's why!
After we ate, Mother and Daddy cleaned up the dishes together.
They weren't even paying attention to me.
That's how come I sneaked into the bathroom to practice another game.
Its name is Throwing Sponges at Principal!
First, I got the sponge from under the sink.
Then I made it soaky wet with water.
"Ready...
"Aim...
"Fire!" I said.
Then I throwed the sponge with all my might.
It splashed right in the middle of the toilet pot!
"BULL'S-EYE! I MADE A BULL'S-EYE!" I hollered real excited.
Only just then, I heard a knock at the door.
"Junie B.? What are you doing in there? Open the door."
Oh no!
It was Mother!
I was in big trouble, I think.
My heart got very pumping. On account of I'm not actually allowed to play in the toilet.
So I quick flushed the sponge down the pot.
Only too bad for me. 'Cause that dumb thing got stucked in the hole.
And the water kept on getting higher.
And higher.
And then it runned right over the top!
Mother banged harder.
"I SAID OPEN THE DOOR!"
I did a gulp.
"Yeah, only it's a little bit splashy in here right now," I explained kind of quiet.
Mother unlocked the door with the key.
I smiled very pleasant.
"Hello. How are you today?" I said.
Mother hollered the name of ROBERT!
Robert is my daddy. Except for sometimes he is Bob.
He came running in there.
"Well, good night, folks," I said.
Then I tried to sneak out of there. But Mother held on to my shirt. And so even when I kept on walking, I kept on staying.
She made me help her and Daddy dry up the water with towels.
After that, I had to take a bath. Only I don't know why. 'Cause I was already wet from the toilet.
After my bath, Mother tucked me into bed. Me and her had a little talk.
"Look, Junie B., Daddy and I know you're excited about the carnival," she said. "And we also know you're having fun practicing the games. But you're worrying too much about winning. Nobody can win all of the time.
"Right?" she said.
"Right," I said.
"And besides, the fun of a school carnival isn't whether you win or lose. The fun of a school carnival is just playing the games in the first place.
"Right?" she said.
"Right," I said.
"So we'll go to Carnival Night on Friday. And we'll have a great time. And we won't worry if we don't win any prizes at all.
"Right?" she said.
"Right," I said.
Mother kissed me goodnight. "See you in the morning," she said.
"Right," I said.
After she closed my door, I waited for her feet to walk away. Then I quick took out my flashlight from under my pillow.
I shined it all around my room.
First, I shined it on my dresser.
Then I shined it on my toy box.
Then I shined it on the brand new bookshelf Daddy made me.
I smiled and smiled.
I>That's/I> where I'm going to put them," I whispered to just myself.
"That is where I'm going to put my hundred prizes."

About the author

I grew up in Mt. Holly, New Jersey. It was a small town surrounded by farmland . . . the kind of town where you greet people by name on Main Street. It was only an hour’s drive to the ocean. So every summer we spent family vacations on Long Beach Island. My brother and I would ride the waves during the day and play miniature golf at night. It’s the kind of idyllic memory that stays in your head long after you’ve grown up and moved away.
After graduating from high school and spending two years at Rider University, I transferred to the University of Alabama where I met my husband, Richard. Eventually his job brought him to Arizona. We both fell in love with the desert and wanted to stay here forever. Still, during the heat of the Arizona summers, those ocean memories would come rushing back. So–after years of sweaty summers–my husband and I finally built a house on Long Beach Island, the same island where my brother and I rode the waves as kids. In the story business, that’s called “coming full circle.” These days, Richard and I divide our time between the desert and the ocean. In the words of Junie B. Jones, I’m a lucky duck.
Q. What inspired you to start writing?
In my case, it was sort of “reverse” inspiration. I got a degree in secondary education. My plan was to teach high school history and political science. But, because of a scheduling problem my senior year, I ended up doing my student teaching in the seventh grade. The word disaster doesn’t really cover this one. I’ll spare you the details. But as I ran screaming from the school building every day, I knew that I would never be a teacher. My husband and I married after graduation, and started a family. A few years later, when I was ready to go to work, I was still haunted by the memories of student teaching. So I was “inspired” to try my hand at writing instead.
Q. How did you go about getting published?
The first children's novel I wrote was Operation: Dump the Chump. As soon as it was finished, I bought a copy of Writer’s Market, found some addresses, and started sending it off to publishers who were accepting unsolicited manuscripts. It was rejected three times. All three rejections managed to work in the classic industry one-liner, “It isn’t right for our list.”
The fourth time I sent it to Alfred Knopf, Inc. A few weeks later, they called and said it was exactly right for their list. I felt like I’d hit the lottery.
Q: You’ve written middle-grade novels, early chapter books, and picture books. Which do you like writing best?
I can’t really say which I like best. But after all the Junie B. books I’ve written, those certainly come the easiest. The middle-grade novels are more of a challenge. But in some ways, that makes them more rewarding. The last two I’ve written (Mick Harte Was Here and The Graduation of Jake Moon) were both about very sensitive topics, so it took a long time to get them exactly right. But I think those two books have made me the most proud.
Q. Tell us about your most recent picture book.
It’s called, MA! There’s Nothing to Do Here! It’s about a baby in utero who is bored out of his mind. The idea for it was born (so to speak) when my daughter-in-law, Renee, invited me to my first grandson’s ultrasound. Although I had never had an ultrasound myself, I’d seen pictures of other babies in utero. But I wasn’t prepared for how amazing it would be to see my own little grandbaby on that screen. I felt like I was watching the Discovery Channel.
Q. How much did you continue to think about the baby after seeing the ultrasound? How did this develop into the idea for the book?
A. On the way out of the doctor’s office, I remember thinking, Okay, so now we’re all going back to our busy lives. But the baby is still in there just floating around. Except for an occasional kick or hiccup, he’s got absolutely nothing to do.
A few months later–when I was getting ready to give Renee a baby shower–I wrote this poem, framed it, and gave it to her as a shower gift.
Q. Of the characters you’ve created, who is your favorite?
A. This would be a bit like picking a favorite child. I don't have a single favorite character, but again, I lived with the characters Mick and Phoebe Harte and Jake and Skelly Moon for a very long time. So those four are the most dear to me.
The characters I've had the most fun with have been the little ones. Little kids are so free to say whatever is on their minds. They aren’t silenced by peer pressure and the notion that they have to sound cool. Molly Vera Thompson in The Kid in the Red Jacket is six, and Thomas Russo in My Mother Got Married and Other Disasters is five. They both were such fun to write about that they led to the creation of Junie B. Jones.
Q. Is Junie B. modeled after you as a child? Did you ever do any of the things that Junie B. does?
A. I was sent to “Principal” in first grade for talking. There were lots of notes sent home that year, as well. My father was on the Board of Education. Not good.
Q. There’s been some criticism of the Junie-speak in the series. How do you answer concerns that Junie's grammar is not good for young readers?
A. Honestly, most of the grown-ups I hear from are writing to tell me that Junie B. Jones got their reluctant readers to read. I have drawers full of letters from parents and teachers that are so meaningful to me, I can’t bear to part with them. These are adults who understand that fictional literature plays a whole different role in children’s lives than a book of grammar or a basic reader.
That having been said, there are always going to be a handful of people who denigrate books that speak in a voice other than their own. I’ve stopped trying to explain the concept of literature to people like that. Wasted time better spent.
8. What makes you laugh?
My sense of humor is a little bit off-center, I think. In the movies, I usually laugh at parts that no one else seems to think are funny. Then there are movies like Young Frankenstein where I laugh from the opening scene straight through to the end.
Lots of other things make me laugh, as well. My husband and sons make me laugh. My dog. My grandsons. Friends. The absurdities of life. My lopsided cakes. The list goes on . . .
What advice do you have for teachers that are aspiring writers? For kids?
There’s nothing revolutionary in my advice, I’m afraid. It’s the same old stuff. Write as much and as often as you can. Try different genres to find your niche. Then rewrite, rewrite, rewrite. And–above all–be your own worst critic.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 21, 2014This Junie B. Jones book is about Carnival Night at school. Junie B. thinks it will be great fun, but Junie B. is so determined to win at everything that she practices and practices and practices.......and doesn't win." For any parent, friend, teacher or child who has encountered the disappointment of losing when they were sure they would win and practiced so hard to win, this is a great book. It won't make the child less competitive, but it does teach that others share the same disappointments and winning just comes easier to some in some areas.
This series is a high interest level series for primary aged children. Although the series is about a kindergartner who turns first grader, it is not just for children of that age level. Children younger enjoy having this series read to them and older children love to read these books to younger children and explain the events and characters. They are fun books even for adults who read them to children. The illustration on the front cover always grabs a child's attention and the synopsis on the back cover is written to make the child want to "find out what happens next!"
I highly recommend this series.

- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2018My kindergartener loves this book. The author uses a "voice" of a child that does not have good grammar. I find this fine as my child relates. That said, it drives some parents nuts. I say, chill out to those parents and let kids be kids.

- Reviewed in the United States on May 21, 2017Somehow the book (Junie B Jones and the Yucky Blucky Fruitcake) came damaged with a piece of the backing ripped off. Don't think it was due to packaging as the outside of package was sealed and not damaged and the rest of the books that came with it were in great condition and undamaged as well. Just that book with the backing ripped. Was sad as it was delivered to my niece on her birthday as part of her birthday gift as she loves to read these books and collecting them. Her being a very picky girl who's very protective of her books and not wanting anyone to touch them cause she doesn't want anyone to wrinkle or damage them, she was quite sad when she saw one of her favorite books ripped already before touching it or getting a chance to read it. Think the rip may have happened at warehouse before or upon packaging, not sure but hopefully they are more careful next time as these books are made of paperback. Other than that she's loves the rest of her books. Will still continue to order more.
