Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Though facing retirement, Father Tim Kavanagh hasn't slowed down one bit since his appearance in These High, Green Hills (Viking, 1996). Racing from one good deed to another, Father Timothy takes in stray sick folk, finds an abandoned child, and helps his favorite baker write a winning jingle. A mayoral race pitting the long-time mayor Esther Cunningham against the possibly corrupt Mack Stroupe makes for some colorful sparring. Father Timothy applies his own unique, time-honored method of intuition, prayer, or dietary indulgence to a multitude of problems big and small. His late-in-life marriage to Cynthia continues to be a blessing readers will feel privileged to share. Distinguished by their rare tone of kindness, Karon's Mitford novels create instant warmth and coziness. Out to Canaan continues in this spirit, offering comedy and consolation to all. For most fiction collections.

From Booklist

Here is another visit to the little mountain village of Mitford (population 1,000) and Father Tim Kavanaugh, rector of Lord's Chapel. A year or so has passed since the events in Karon's previous book, These High, Green Hills. Dooley Barlowe, Father Tim's unofficially adopted son, comes home from prep school for the summer. Father Tim continues piecing together Dooley's scattered family, who come from the impoverished Creek community. He drives to Florida to find little Jessie, reunites her with Dooley's brother, Poohbaw, and his mother, Pauline, and helps Pauline find a job managing the dining room at Hope House, the retirement home built by Mitford's wealthiest citizen, Sadie Baxter. What with Dooley being home, and Father Tim and Cynthia taking in the ailing Harvey Welch, another Creek refugee, and 13-year-old Lace Turner coming by to help nurse Harley, who's been like a father to her, Father Tim's rectory is anything but peaceful. A mysterious group called Miami Development wants to buy Fernbank, Sadie Baxter's old home, and turn it into a luxury spa. And the bishop comes to town and announces Father Tim's retirement, now just a year and a half away. Although Mitford and its close-knit community seem quaint and idyllic, Karon's portrayal is never sentimentalized. Out to Canaan can stand alone, but pleasure will be heightened by reading the whole series, a feast of small riches. Mary Ellen Quinn

My husband and I love the Mitford series and its author, Jan Karon. We feel like the characters (and Ms. Karon) are members of our family! In this book, we meet new characters and experience surprising developments in the lives of the familiar cast. As in all of the Mitford books, there is mystery, excitement, poignancy, and hope woven throughout the storylines. Highly recommend to all!

Another winning entry in a beloved series! This was a pure delight from start to finish. If you haven't discovered Mitford yet, along with the curious and eclectic assortment of people who populate the tiny town, I highly recommend taking a jaunt there in Jan Karon's series!

“Out to Canaan” by Jan Karon continues with stories about the fictional town of Mitford and its unique and quirky characters.
Tension ratchets up as personalities clash and unscrupulous goings on are happening right and left.

Will Father Tim and his bride survive? Will friends remain friends? Is Mitford ready for change?

Karon writes with humor and grace, much like the newlyweds proceed their lively decisions.

This book was a gift for my sister who is a Mitford series fan. I gave it 5 stars because she told me she LOVES it! She didn't elaborate why. I know from the few books from this series that I've read that the stories are endearing, interesting with characters that are real and likeable. There is enough real-life drama included that the episodes are lifelike with spice yet always uplifting and entertaining.

A stupendously written book that I'm sure I'll come back to again and again. Coming from a small town, well relatively small, I've enjoyed the cosy atmosphere of the Father Tim books. This one will not disappoint if you love that style as well. Father Tim is thinking of retirement and all the blessed things that come with it. His lovely wife is writing a new book and there are always adventures when Dooley is around. Enjoy!

Out to Canaan is the third book in the Mitford series by Jan Karon. Of all the books I have read (too many to count)these are the very best. Father Tim, Dooley, Cynthia and Barnabas,(a black dog that Father Tim describes as "big as a Buick") are the main characters in this heart-warming series. The setting is Mitford, a small town in the beautiful hills of North Carolina. Reading these books one feels a kinship with the town and the people due to the superb writing of Jan Karon. She is truly blessed with a gift few can boast of. If you are looking for a series of stories that will stay in your heart forever, start with At Home in Mitford and I promise, you will be hooked.

An excellent story. Mitford is a wonderful town with wonderful people. But not all the people are nice. Just like in real life, there are those who are very selfish and want to ruin a good thing.
Read this book. You won’t be disappointed.
