At least, that's what Charlotte has been told her whole life. But when strange new feelings begin to emerge, Charlotte has to decide what she's willing to risk to discover love -- and ultimately, herself.

I originally found this book on Deviant Art in '07/'08, I worked at Kinko's at the time and was worried this book might disappear once the author stopped at Chapter 23; so I printed and bound a copy of it. To the author: I'm really sorry if printing/binding your book from DA was the wrong thing to do, I was just trying to not lose a piece of art that meant so much to me. I promise, I had only good intentions! I can't describe the joy this has brought me to discover that you didn't give up on this book and finished it, then got it published! I'm so proud of how far you have come.Back to the review: I have read this version that I have 10+ times over the years, having it always end at chapter 23 has been brutal but when you love the writing style/story as much as I did, it was worth it. I can hardly wait to absolutely devour this finished version of the book and look forward to seeing what has changed over the years between my printed version and this finalized version. I purchased the Kindle version because in 2 weeks I am going to become a full-time RV'er and I can already promise that this will be in my top 5 most read books for 2025. If you're looking for a YA LGBTQ book that doesn't give creepy vibes, this is the one for you!

What a novel, what a well told story. Reading just the first page, the first eight paragraphs, I immediately knew two things, I liked the rhythm of the writing. It was poetic and it had a well crafted style. Sounds and syllables and sentences to savor. And I could not wait to discover more about Charlotte, more about the new girl in her school, Its appropriate that the first sentence is just one word. "Green." My feeling after sampling that first page, I want to read this story, I want to watch Charlotte grow, excited to see what happens with her feelings after noticing the new girl in school. After a long winter, I am outside in early spring, hearing the voices of returning song birds. I want to hear more of Charlotte's voice. I want to read more of this author's voice.

Took about a week to read the book, even though like others here I was tempted to set everything aside and read it all in one sitting, one day. But I also wanted to last and have a treat to come back to each night. I woke up in the middle of the night on July 4th, picked up "She's My Ride Home", and could not put it down. At about 5 am I remember so clearly finishing chapter 19 and rereading its final paragraphs many times, savoring the beautiful words, so identifying with Charlotte's story at that moment, so reflecting and thinking decades back to my own high school experiences and reliving my own feelings. The beauty of the story, of the writing, of the beautiful characters, the tension and tragedy of the bullying and difficulties, of the challenge Charlotte was facing, and Emma, parents, teachers, friends. Must have spent close to an hour or more rereading, thinking, pausing to see and feel the poetry and rhythm and meaning in several of those chapter 19 sentences, The time was well spent. Later that morning, seven days ago on July 4th, 2014, finishing this the book, taking the dynamic duo of Terra and Calvin (border collies) out for another adventure chasing, discovering, swimming.- I was so glad I had discovered this book and this new author. I highly recommend these memorable characters, this moving story, and the wonderful way it is written by new author Jacquelyn Bushore!

This YA novel's characters are easy to like, genuine, and face complex, real issues within the high school and home environments. I found myself rooting for, not only the main love relationship, but mother-daughter, best friends, etc.
Charlotte, our heroine, is brave, intelligent, and her heart is open to love, even as she processes through her myriad levels of feelings: do I crush on girls/do other girls feel like me, could I be a lesbian, what are these feelings about the new girl/could the feelings possibly be reciprocated, will I be accepted as a gay Charlotte, etc.?
Some of the storylines that are real and complex, are addressed honestly, but, at times, are wrapped up too easily or quickly, with a bow. However, I still could easily give it four stars because the characters are endearing, and "Ride Home" is well written - honest and unabashed. I read it through in one, cold afternoon, not wanting to put it down!
This novel is appropriate reading for high school, mature junior high readers. Would make a great GSA reading group book pick.

    The Good:
This is a great story. I loved it. The writing is beautifully done, clear, and full of emotion. It flowed well and had a good balance of description; not painfully detailed and not disappointingly vague either. I got a good sense of the characters; they seemed real to me. I fell in love with Charlotte and Emma. The dialog is good and believable. Even though this is a story about a high school girl, set in a high school, and aimed at high school aged readers, it didn't feel overly "typically teenage angst-y". I didn't find myself rolling my eyes at the character's behavior and thoughts (I'm 42, BTW). The love between Charlotte and Emma is powerful, without feeling cheesy or creepy. It's clear that this is true love, not a crush, infatuation, or a phase. Sexual behavior is only vaguely alluded to and tastefully done. There are no typos, type setting, or formatting errors that I could see.

I would recommend this book to anyone, especially straight readers (me) who want to get a sense of and be educated about what it must be like to struggle as a teen with your sexual identity. I felt I came out of this experience a better person.

    The Bad:
It was too short! I didn't want the ride to end. While the love triangle was handled well, I felt the author could have conveyed the sense of desire and need battling with guilt and shame a little better. Based on what you learn about Charlotte's personality, I thought she would have felt worse about what she was doing than the author portrayed. More so concerning Emma. How Emma dealt with and felt about the situation was a little bit disappointing because it seemed her relative lack of guilt was out of character.

    In summary: Read this book.

Decent read. Gentle. Coming of age love story between two adolescent girls running into the typical rough waters of acceptance. I thought the dog being hit by a car was more than I was looking for and the ending was a little abrupt I would have liked a little more intimacy between
the girls but that's just me. Decent story over all. Some real perspective on parental reaction to the love affair.

5.0 out of 5 stars Besser als keeping you a secret
Reviewed in Germany on August 18, 2014
Meines Erachtens besser als Keeping you a secret.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bom livro
