This is a charming book. Birdie’s about as likable as a heroine can get, and Bowser’s dog’s-eye view of the world makes him a delightful narrator: He generally has good insights into humans but doesn’t always understand exactly what’s going on, and expressions such as “wait until the cows come home” get him seriously confused. It’s heart-warming to see how devoted these two are to each other. The book’s pace is a bit leisurely at first, but it picks up as Birdie becomes increasingly involved in investigating the theft of a stuffed marlin. Young readers should be able to catch some of the clues, and I think they’ll enjoy trying to solve the mystery. I’m planning to give this book to my dog-crazy eight-year-old granddaughter, and I can just picture her relishing this pair’s adventures and giggling at the jokes—and, perhaps, giving her own dog an extra hug when she finishes.

I love Chet and Bernie books so I was excited to see what Spencer Quinn had to offer for kids. Even though I'm a grandma, I'm still a kid at heart and read my favorite books from my youth once a year. About two chapters into this book I realized that my young friend Jessi would love this book so I ordered the paperback edition for her. And I was right.(Aren't grandmas usually right?) She did really like the book. The great thing about Spencer Quinn's books are that he really DOES understand dogs. Their tongues are longer than their attention spans and that's what makes the book so interesting and fun. If you have a pre-teen or even a teenager, this is a great book. A combination of mystery and fun are entwined with the emotions of a young girl who misses her mother, who is working on an oil rig off the coast of Africa. Try it. You'll like it..

I wasn't going to buy this book, because it's for children. Then I got an email from goodreads/Spencer Quinn touting it. I figured why not, I'm in withdrawal from Chet as it is. The main character, besides Bowzer, who is 8 months old, is Birdie, age 11. And herein lies the weakness. Bernie Little is marvelously adult, and marvelously human. The contrast between Chet's perfect, devoted dog-ness and Bernie's imperfect adult human-ess is one of the major and many charms of the Chet and Bernie series. Dogs are basically furry children. So to create some kind of dynamic in this book, the child has to act like a grown up. Personally, I prefer Bernie. But I'm old. This is probably a great kid's book.
I was also hoping we might meet a different dog. Bowzer is essentially Chet, complete with his "amigo" s (wouldn't we use another term in Louisiana, maybe cher, or even amie?), but with a less interesting back story.
In spite of the above observations, I gave this book 4 stars, first, because I am not it's target audience. and second, I read it in one sitting, laughed, cringed and more, because this author knows how to tell a story. Chet lite is way better than no Chet at all.

Best novel from the point of view of a dog that I've ever read. Quinn creates a fascinating, believable mystery novel about a young girl and her grandmother struggling to keep their Cajun country bait shop from getting crushed by a ruthless competitor. The girl and her dog don't do anything that strains believability - the dog, especially, remains within dog-land with everything he actually does. Meanwhile, though, the dog remains a wonderfully witty narrator in spite of, or because of, all the things about human society that he doesn't understand. We enjoy the dog because of his voice, and come to love him for his fierce loyalty. I loved this book as an adult reader; the children I know who have read it love it, if anything, more.

Birdie is the 11 year old heroine and Bowser is the going-to-eat-you-out-of-house-&-home mutt she adopts at the beginning of the book, and together, they make one beautiful team. The story is told from Bowser's point of view, a literary device I've previously had no patience for, but it works SO well here. The dog's thoughts are HILARIOUS, and yet the author manages to convey the poignancy of the accompanying humans and their feelings without breaking character.

Regardless of your age and your usual tastes, this one is guaranteed to please. Highly, HIGHLY recommended.

Well, I admit that I'm a Spencer Quinn fan. I've read all his Chet & Bernie books and loved each and every one. This book, although written for kids, is in the same vein as the C&B books: told from the dog's point of view. The dog character is not Chet, but he might as well be. He's written the same way as Chet is. He is Bowser, and his owner is a young girl named Birdie. This is a mystery story, albeit for kids. There is no doubt that Mr. Quinn has a dog or dogs and loves them. He knows them, and I think any kid who has a dog and likes mysteries will definitely like this book. Those who don't have a dog, will wish they did.

This Texas Bluebonnet nominee for 2016-2017 is a terrific "girl and her dog" mystery set in the bayous of Louisiana. Readers will love slobbery mutt Bowser and his ability to smell a lie on humans and to love his owner, Birdie. Both Bowser and Birdie are determined to solve the mystery of Grandma's stolen trophy Marlin and soon discover that the theft may lead them to a long lost treasure. Told from Bowser's point of view makes for very entertaining versions of what is happening with those odd humans and keeps this book moving all the way to its somewhat unexpected conclusion. And the best news is that Quinn quickly followed this book with another Bowser and Birdie mystery--Arf! Both are highly recommended for mystery/dog story fans from 4th grade and up.

Ein MUSS für jeden Liebhaber der Hundekrimis von Spencer Quinn.
Das Buch ist ausgewiesen für " young adults ", macht aber auch
älteren adults richtig viel Spaß beim Lesen. Man sollte keinen
hochwertigen Wahnsinnskrimi erwarten, wer aber beim Lesen gerne
schmunzelt oder gar herzhaft lacht, ist in diesem Buch richtig gut
