From Everest

"What's the matter with you, kid? Why don't you look where you're going?"

"Sorry." Dominic picked up the vial and scooted out of the way. Mom had continuous nightmares that climbing would kill at least one member of her family. I'll bet she wasn't expecting it to happen like this, he reflected, a little shaken.

The SUV accelerated up the ramp, pausing at the top. The driver tossed a candy bar wrapper into the trash barrel and drove off. It was a Summit Energy Bar. Dominic recognized the logo from where he stood, rooted to the spot. He had climbed towering cliffs, yet walking up this gentle slope to get that piece of paper seemed much, much harder.

He reached into the garbage and fished out the sticky wrapper. In a way, he almost knew what he would see before he turned it over.

A V!

It was a ticket to the top of the world.

What else can be said for a series and book that does not disappoint a young minds thirst for adventure? this is an easy read as my son says "I feel like I am there when I am reading this". Could not ask for more in a book series that has excited my son to read more and find more series like this one.

I’ve read this aloud in my fifth grade class for five or six years now. The start can be a little tough to get kids past the challenges of being unfamiliar with climbing and mountaineering language and techniques. But once you get into the character relations and the question of whose funeral the story started at, kids are often hooked and want to go on to read the rest of the trilogy.

I met Gordon Korman last fall. He explained how he researched the book and some stories behind the writing of this series. After hearing him talk about the series, I had to get it for our nephew for Christmas. It is a great series with a huge cliffhanger at the end of each book in the trilogy, very well written especially for reluctant readers.

I enjoyed this book very much. I like suspenseful stories, and they are sometimes hard to find without adult content. Great book for kids 3rd grade and up. Quick easy read.

I bought several of these to use with a 4th grade guided reading group, hoping to move us into longer chapter books and study elements of fiction in greater detail. These books served as an adequate but unspectacular tool within these lessons - my students were very engaged in the concept of these books (climbing Everest) but the actual story itself never roped them in. We shifted the focus of our lessons about 2 weeks ago after we were 70 pages into the book, and I've yet to have one of my students ask me when we're going to finish the Everest story. I think a couple of my kids were happy to see it go.

These books are fantastic. I read them to my children each night before bed and I encourage them to my students in my class. Gordon Korman is a fantastic author who takes the time to interact with the students who read his books.
